Then hire the Georgeown coach: John Thompson or whoever was coaching big men.

He'd be an upgrade to Mr. Mean.

that's exactly what I thought as well.
Ewing was never that good at the low post back-to-basket game compared to Dream. the only thing he can help with Yao's offence is probably improve Yao's fadeaway and mid-range jumpers. but what Yao is really in need of are a jump hook and maybe some other back-to-basket move!

Do you all really think Ewing is the best big man coach out there? Really? Better than Russell, Thompson, Jabbar etc? I'd take Walton or Robinson before I take Ewing.

His track record for a coach is less than impressive.

You are acting as if all those guys you mentioned want to be assistant coaches. Uh, doesn't that need to be taken into consideration? If not, why doesn't Les just pay Shaq to quit and become an assistant?

They are available - I'd ask before I'd say they can't. Plus there are others out there. I'm just wondering why the fasination with Ewing? I think Larry Smith is a better big man coach than Ewing and I don't want Larry Smith on the Rocket roster next year.

    Forget Ewing-

I wouldn't take Ewing in his prime for Yao right now.

Can Ewing teach him how to be a better passer?- No
How to get better low post position?- maybe
Help Yao with the jump hook? wouldn't hurt

Can Ewing teach him how to pass down into the low post?- no the point guard coach needs to get that across to the rest of the team.

    ArtV-
With respect - how can you throw a blanket over Walton, Thompson, Russell, Jabbar or Robinson and say they want to be a Rockets assistant? Did any of them publicly say they wanted to be a Rockets assistant coach? They have had a whole season to step up and apply...did any one? To my knowledge, no. We had many former players and coaches saying they "wanted to work with Yao" but that is not the same as taking an assistant coaches position. Big difference.

The position which Ewing would hold is not high paying, not glamorous, and has the associated travel for 41 away games. On a staff chart, Ewings position of authority would fall below Tom Thibodeau and Steve Clifford and just above advance scout Andy Greer. Maybe, just maybe there's a reason local residents like Dream and Moses aren't campaigning like Mario Elie...this is a full-time job and not a photo op.

If Van Gundy thinks Ewing is the right choice, I'm not going to argue.

And that's the bottom line. It's gonna happen.

Gator - I just don't see the fascination with Ewing as a big man coach. If I were coach, I’d be shopping around for others who may be doing something else right now, but I see more of a teacher (notice I didn’t include Hakeem in there as I don’t see him as a teacher). It doesn’t hurt to ask and I do think you would have some interest from this list and others since the Rockets are a good club and they have that big guy…you know…what’s his name. Yes - some might tell you to lose their phone number, but I think you would have some interest.

But VG is the coach – he picks – I’ll live with it - and yes it will probably happen.
