what part of playing as a big man in the NBA is not covered by
low post offense, low post defense and rebounding?

Thou all forget, Ewing was on the Dream Team. The greatest team ever assembled.

I don't care what kind of player Ewing used to be. He's not playing anymore. I have serious concerns as to whether he has the type of character we would want in a coach. His "we make a lot, but we also spend a lot" comment and his Gold Cup escapades give me no confidence that he should help lead our young team. I would much rather Ewing stay out of here.

I am sure Ewing could help out Yao alot. Ewing is a great big man, not as good as Dream, but still top 10 center of all time imo. I have heard bad things about his character, but I'm sure the media makes it sound worst than it really is. Any way his chartacter couldn't be any wosrt than Dream :D. I get a funny feeling though thinking Ewing as a Rocket.

You know what I think? Screw the Rockets glory days. I loved 'em as much as anyone but if we want to keep reliving those days we should have just kept Rudy.

It's the Van Gundy era now...time to move on.

So we should just hire a bonehead like Ewing?

If its all the same and Ewing and Elie have about the same experiece I would rather have Elie.

Let me manage the Paint area. I bet I could turn Yao into a Roc under the basket. ;)

I agree too, but why Ewing? Why? Why? Why?!!!!! I'd hire him though if it improves Yao. Even if I do hate him.

How is that? Ewing was an assistant with the Wizards last season. Elie? I don't think so.

The Rockets need someone to help with Yao. Ewing is perfect.

What makes Ewing a bonehead? Shouldn't you trust the hirings of Van Gundy? Would he want a "bonehead" on his staff? It's not as if Ewing is creating the position himself...Van Gundy wants him on his staff for good reason.

I'd rather have Jabbar than Ewing. Did the Wizards have a Big Man?

One season as an assistant with the Wizards doesn't seem like it will make much of a difference to me.

The reason I call Ewing a bonehead is because of some of the stupid comments he has made. Such as the classic "Sure we make more, but we spend more."

If Van Gundy wants Ewing then its his call. I just don't care for him very much. Just because he was a great Center in the NBA doesn't mean he will be a great coach for Yao to learn from.

Mario Elie is the man. I would love to see him get a shot with the Rockets. He is going to be the last coach on the bench anyway.

I think Ewing would be a great assistant coach. Georgetown has put so many quality big men into the NBA that they had to be taught something right. Ewing will bring some of that knowledge with him and he's still very close to Thompson. All the gripes about Yao this last year were about how he needed to bulk up and become a presence under the hoop - Ewing will be able to help with that right away.

I dont know about the rest of you but when it was clear that the Rox had no gas to make it to the finals anymore, I actually wanted to see Pat get his ring. Great players deserve their chance to be at the top, if Ewing gets that chance as a Rocket assistant coach, so be it. Although the irony is worthy of a made for tv movie.

And the Strip club thing... Please. Francis is caught driving around town drunk and on painkillers and that's ok, but Pat's a perv. Give him a break.

About 3 years ago I went to Maggios, on Post Oak Blvd. As I was being seated I noticed that The infamous Patrick Ewing was already seated at table with Sleepy Floyd.

That night Ewing was going to just sit on Seattle's bench, because of some injury.

Anyway, I went up to Ewing for an autograph when Sleepy was on the phone. He just looked at me and he just shook his head and waved me off.

Man was I pissed. No One else in this upscale Italan resturant had any cluse as to who he was.

    What a jerk.

BUT if he can and will help YAO I'm all for it.

Most if not all athletes hate it when they are approached in a restaurant and I can't blame them. I've heard many mention that that is a pet peeve of theirs. I'm sure someone will say "they make millions it's the least they can do, blah, blah, blah." I'm with Ewing on this one.

But you don't know that. I don't either. He could be great for Yao. Maybe Yao will teach him something...who knows.

It's Van Gundy's choice and until he we see it is a mistake I think we should back every freakin' move he makes until proven otherwise.

    Absolutely.

Also, if we want to hire assistants based on them being former rockets, how about Larry Smith? He did a hell of a job.
