I remember someone posting in the Yates thread a bunch about how if he was on the other team he would be insulted if Yates stopped playing 100 percent by not pressing up 100 points. Well, the fact that Dallas was pissed about this TD should help put that theory to rest.
Of course it's uncalled for, but I have no problem with what they did. You play to win the game, not embarrass the other team. A part of me wants to say that Favre and co. pulled this stunt because Favre wanted to be the only 40 year old QB in history to throw 4 TD passes in a playoff game. It sounds reasonable to me. It's a non issue either way. You're not supposed to feel any pity for any team IMO, especially in the playoffs. But I do also believe that if it you turn it around and have Romo throwing the "unnecessary" TD to go up 34-3 we will have a similar thread and everyone would be saying the usual "Stay Classy Dallas."
As for the play, I don't know all the circumstances around it, but from what little I know, they should've called a running play. The game was already won, so running more time off the clock to end it would have been the goal.
i don't have a problem with them doing it...but favre clearly lied about it in the press conference because he was talking about some old animosity his old GB team had from the time we broke a record with 7 FGs in a win against them. just say you wanted to rub it in and make the loss deficit bigger so it would look better on paper. no biggie. he basically said that anyone that knows him knows he is not that type of player. lol...give me a break. you did it cause you wanted to continue to stick it to us. fine...but don't bs about it.
And thats not running up the score? Besides, then you have to kickoff as opposed to turning the ball over to Dallas at their own 5 yard line if you fail.
I remember that time, and I do recall that there was more of a split in opinion mostly borne out of high animosity towards Belichick. I'm no fan of Belichick myself, but I had the exact same stance then as I did today. If you don't want them to score another touchdown, then stop them on 4th down. Don't get your panties all up in a bunch afterwards because you got manhandled and pushed around on the field and now the other guys are "classless" because they scored a knockout punch before the ref blew the contest over. It's one thing to be a loser because the other guys are flat out better than you, it's another thing to be a sore loser. When my Texans get embarrassed on the field (and thankfully that is a rare occurrence these days), I don't get my panties all up in a bunch and call the other guys classless because they racked up 45 points on us. The difference is that Cowboy fans have this general sense of entitlement, and a decade or more of playoff futility isn't going to change that.
See, I don't know. I can't believe it, but I'm unbelievably stoked for this Vikings/Saints matchup. Both teams were so overwhelmingly better than their opponents in the games going into the NFC Championship, and for me it's almost a pick 'em game. I think I take the Saints because they're at home and they've got more team speed, but not by much. Next weekend will kick ass.
Personally, I'm of the opinion that in a professional game, any running up the score is fine. And this isn't even a case of running up the score. I didn't care much for Pats doing it in their 18-1 season. But I wasn't against it or anything. That said, I do think that on the high school level, there should be more discretion involved. But even then, I wouldn't have cared if a school did what the Vikings did today.
If I were the Cowboys, I'd be embarrassed if I knew a team was intentionally laying down, even in the last 2 minutes. I'd completely respect a team going all-out on me, anytime. (as long as it's not against the Rockets) (just kidding)
It is pro sports and they're getting paid to kill each other but there is such a thing as winning with class. If the Cowboys started chop blocking Jared Allen on every play down 30 points or started corner blitzing Favre on every play to try to knock him out, the Vikings would be b****ing to high heaven.
Do you have a problem with offenses taking a knee at the end of the game? What about a few years ago when Brian Westbrook slid at the one yard line instead of getting a TD to allow the Eagles to kill the clock? The Vikings had other options. I'm not concerned about the Cowboys feelings but I am surprised how little people are considering why its a good idea to just eat up clock at the end of an NFL game when you have a big lead rather than trying to keep on scoring.
If there is enough time to where taking a knee doesn't end the game then do what you want, the game is still going. It's up to them to stop it if they don't like it. Otherwise pass, throw, kick, or punt, what does it matter? Until they stop playing on their side you have no obligation to do so yourself.
I think They should go for the first down by passing or rushing, to try to run off the clock, but not for the TD. So against the cowboys its fine, but against any other team the yare running up the score? Like the Patriots vs. the Titans, when they were winning 45-0 in halftime a lot of people said that was classless, that Tom Brady and all the starters played in the first drive of the 3rd quarter, but now its ok, that Favre scored aonther TD when the game was over only because its against Dallas? I think Favre just wanted to get more stats, what would the people think if Favre or any receiver got hurt, they would think that was a stupid move.
