Was McHale really that bad? or was he too savage?

You'll have to elaborate on that. When did McHale coach Gordon, Anderson, Lou, Nene, etc? When did MDA make it to the WCF? When did MDA win 56 games? When did MDA have to coach Dwight in Houston (we already know he sucked at it in LA)?

 

the adjustments MDA made vs OKC showed his true value. The thing is that he will always get outcoached by Pop.

True, but its been like 8x or so, even when he had a better team than SA in Phx

 

He benched Harden and got to the WCF with a team that had no Dmo, no Beverly, and no Cisco Garcia for the playoffs.... We were starting Pablo Prigioni and made the WCF.

What ignoramus is arguing this year's playoff team was not better than that team? My God look at the roster...... If you would take that year's team over this year's team, please speak up so I can forever know to disregard your slighted, amateur, nonsense opinion.

Rick the master of the offensive shuffle was close to 70 or something. Dude had a quick stint in Minny and called it a day.

 

Well, tbh no coach has been able to coach Dwight so far...Stan was able to do it when he was still growing and not established as a top player, after that you know how their story ended...i still remember McHale talking about how Dwight should commit to the pick&roll etc...now we'll see how it will go with Bud but so far doesn't look like this is going to change...

 

Tbh i always liked McHale persoanlity, can't lie about that, but as a coach i always thought he was bottom tier, on the level of Corbin, Del Negro etc...

 

McHale was an awful coach who occasionally did something good.

 

You have a point about the results. However I'm not sure that at least in his first two seasons with Houston Dwight Howard didn't > Nene, Gordon, etc. in terms of projected overall wins.

You can ask anyone, I was the first to defend McHale when I thought he was unfairly attacked on the board. I thought McHale really struggled at times to make game time decisions, but he did still have a system that ultimately got similar performance. They did get some great performances that year though such as the Josh Smith/Corey Brewer game.

I guess the 15/16 season just left such an awful taste in our mouth that it undermined the 14/15 season & McHales legacy. I put a ton of blame on McHale and co. for having a terrible training camp & preseason that showed they didn't prepare the team effectively and ultimately got in a hole they could never dig out of.

 

Very bad coach. He wasn't just outcoached by Pop, but just about every coach come playoff time. The Rockets are better off under MDA

 

McHale was a very bad coach, so yes, he was really that bad.

 

McHale's best season is 4 games better than MDA's first season... Let that sink in for a bit.

Also, Mac had a Corey Brewer who could make shots and a Dwight Howard who was stilling buying into Rocket's basketball that year.
