Boy, you've got that right. Of course, Nixon thought he could do what he wanted to do as well. Funny, I always thought we elected Presidents to do what the people wanted them to. I wonder how Bush would fair in an election today? There are some Republicans I know who, given a second chance, would eagerly vote against him. Our system doesn't work that way, however. If you can be dishonest while getting yourself elected, which happens with both Republicans and Democrats, sadly, then it falls to those in our free press, and individuals willing to put their careers and reputations on the line, to shine a spotlight on just what is happening. The public can make their displeasure known during the next mid-term elections. Unless Bush's hubris produces a scenario similar to what brought down Tricky Dick. I doubt we'll see that with Bush. He's getting such sage advice from Rove and company.

    Oh, wait...

Sure but the National Voice was heard on November 4, 2004 not July 23, 2005. It was Clinton who governed by polls. You're still living in the past... :D

I understand that it's important to keep the focus on Rove, but I hope the Dems don't go to far with the partisan politics.
    __________

    Democrats-only Hill hearing targets Rove

Democrats convened a partisan hearing yesterday in an attempt to breathe new life into the suspicion that Karl Rove is guilty of an illegal leak to the press.
    ...

Roll Call reported Thursday that a set of "talking points" was issued Wednesday by Senate Democratic leadership urging rank-and-file senators to do what they could to keep the controversy surrounding Mr. Rove in the news.

Republican National Committee spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said the "faux hearings" demonstrate that Democrats are too eager to score political points to wait for the facts to come out upon completion of the special prosecutor's investigation into the matter.

"If Democrats had any confidence in the investigatory process, they would hold their fire and let the investigation proceed rather than rushing to judgment," Miss Schmitt said.

    Back to Story - Help
Gonzales Says He Told Card About CIA Probe By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer
    Sun Jul 24,10:55 PM ET

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Sunday that he notified White House chief of staff Andy Card after the Justice Department opened an investigation into who revealed a covert CIA officer's identity, but waited 12 hours to tell anyone else in the executive mansion.

The White House did not respond to questions Sunday about whether Card passed that information to top Bush aide Karl Rove or anyone else, giving them advance notice to prepare for the investigation.

Gonzales was White House counsel on Sept. 29, 2003, and got the first official word inside the White House when the Justice Department opened its inquiry. Earlier that day, White House press secretary Scott McClellan had said the leak was a serious matter the Justice Department should pursue "to the fullest extent." McClellan also said it was "ridiculous" to suggest Rove, Bush's top political operative, was involved.

Despite repeated denials by the White House that Rove played a part in revealing the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame, Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper recently said he first learned of her position during a discussion with Rove in July 2003. Cooper said Rove made the disclosure as he cautioned the reporter against allegations that Plame's husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, was making about faulty Iraq intelligence.

Gonzales said Justice Department lawyers notified him of the investigation around 8 p.m., and he got permission from them to wait until the following morning to direct the staff to preserve any materials related to the case.

"We were advised, `Go ahead and notify the staff early in the morning, that would be OK,'" Gonzales said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "And again, most of the staff had gone home. No one knew about the investigation."

Gonzales said he immediately notified Card, then told President Bush the next morning before notifying the White House staff.

At the time, the Justice Department was run by John Ashcroft, who eventually recused himself from the case under pressure from Democrats who complained about his ties to Rove.

Gonzales, who succeeded Ashcroft, also stepped aside from the investigation because of his involvement as White House counsel. He has testified before a grand jury investigating the matter but declined Sunday to discuss his testimony or disclose what personal knowledge he had about the leak. He said only on "Fox News Sunday" that he first learned of Plame's work for the CIA from newspaper reports.

Gonzales said he didn't start his own internal investigation when he was White House counsel because he didn't want to interfere with any possible criminal investigation.

Democratic Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware said he doesn't doubt Gonzales' sincerity, but that his decision to notify only Card about the federal investigation "wasn't the soundest of judgments."

"The real question now is, 'Who did the chief of staff speak to?'" Biden asked, speculating as to whether Card might have spoken to Rove or someone else.

White House spokeswoman Christie Parell said Sunday that the White House will not discuss the Plame leak until after the investigation has concluded, other than to say the president's staff is cooperating fully.

I'm sure there are records kept of this sort of thing, but it would be interesting to see the log of people that came back into the white house after 8 PM when Gonzales told Card (or Card's phone records on who he called before the staff was notified in the morning).

could it get any more pathetic than this?

nevermind that many CIA officers have stated that a lot of covert agents drive into Langley everyday - the fact that Republicans are just making **** up in an effort to downplay the fact that their Leader broke the law and jeopardized our national security for political revenge is just mindnumbing

Republicans who put America ahead of your party and ideology - PLEASE STAND UP and take back your party from these nuts

    Great comparison. One guy screamed.

The other one tried to make excuses for blowing the cover of a covert operative of the CIA who was involved in keeping tabs on Saudia Arabia, the middle east and WMD's.

as an aside - like him or not, what exactly about Howard Dean is so radically, nutty liberal? Gun Control? Balanced budget? So eager to portray "The Liberals" as foaming at the mouth crazy as a distraction from the content of the counter-arugment... so what, he yelled at a rally, calls Bush out and glossed your party as a bunch of whities. Big Fat Hairy Deal. Like the typical RNC koolaid gulper has less vitrol toward the Dems than that.
