Let's look at the Magic frontcourt: Hill, Battie and Garrity? A good frontcourt in 1998, but those guys' careers are over. Hill is an franchise-killer who hasn't had a single worthwhile season in five years, and even if he makes a full recovery this year I doubt he could be more than an average SF. When he was with the Celtics, Battie underwent major surgery and from then on was in so much pain he couldn't practice with the team. Garrity is physically brittle Matt Bullard. That leaves Howard and Cato. While impressive in the summer leagues, I don't think he's going to be seeing extended minutes this year. For comparison, Al Jefferson really outplayed him, and it looks like he's going to spend time on the Celtics IR. Cato is a good backup center, but he looks like he's the team's third-best player at this point, and that's sad. Make no mistake - this team is in bad shape. They aren't very good, and the prospects of roster acquisitions through free agency or the draft aren't very good.
