76ers is the league's dumping ground/junkyard.

Jason Thompson is 29 years old, he's not that young. He isn't that good guys.. nothing to get worried about.

Warriors will have roughly 69 million committed next year if they cut JThompson (only 2.6 or so of his salary is guaranteed) or 73 million if they keep him.

That leaves them with either approximately 21 million or 25 million UNDER the estimated 89 million Salary cap for 16-17.

The warriors could easily resign both Barnes and Ezeli to max contracts and still be under the luxury tax.

Or they could go after a free agent and then resign one or both using their bird rights.

Its even possible for the warriors to straight up sign Durant for roughly 25 million, if they cut or renounce their rights to Thompson, Ezeli, Barnes, Livingston.

This arms race in depth is getting crazy. Great pick up for GS.

GSW tax bill drops from $24m to $16m with the PHI trade. Before the GW/DL/JT trades GSW had a tax bill of $38.1m. $22m savings in 2 trades.
— Bobby Marks (@BobbyMarks42) July 31, 2015

So to save 22 million/trade David Lee's 15 million dollar contract, all the warriors needed to do was agree to a pick swap with OKC/Miami picks owned by Philly and take on Jason Thompson (owed 6.4 million this year guaranteed 2.6 next) and Chris Babbit (owed 946,000).

Warriors GM bob meyers deserves a lot of credit for pulling this off, when most believed it would cost the warriors a 1st round pick to get rid of Lees contract (ala Rockets w/Lin, Sacto w/JT, Landy, Stauskas etc).

In fact many believed it would cost the Warriors ATLEAST 1 first round pick.

well depends how you value their 1st round pick.

if they will give David Lee completely and only getting back a TE, they will save more tax, right now Thompson is at about 6-7 mils with 2 years.

so actually the tax money we are talking about could be 10-15 mils more (depending next years situation) compare with just getting back a TE.

then its a comparison of :
10-15 mils tax + 13 mils salary for 2 years+ the actual usage of Thompson
    VS
giving up a first round + TE in return + better tax relieve

don't think there is a definite answer for this yet.

I missed the 2.6 mils guarantee part.

So this makes it a 9-10 mils for 2 years deal, with probably tax paid around 10-15 still?

Jason Thompson is nothing to worry about

GSWs small ball is what the league needs to worry about. Thompson doesn't help that AT ALL

We and the league would actually love to see Bogut and Thompson on the court more

Everyone proclaims how big small ball is: then the champs get a avg to below avg 6'11 traditional big man who doesn't shoot 3s and we worry about it. It's nothing, because he won't play much at all.

I'm willing to bet that if the trade was reverse: "GSW get veteran Gerald Walkce from 76ers for Jason Thompson" we'd get the same reaction here.

Ppl are scared and GSW and SAS must be smarter than us

Pretty much. While JThompson is better than the corpse of Gerald Wallace, it'll be extremely unlikely he'll be anything more than some added frontcourt depth, ie... the 10-11th man off the bench.

The move basically saved the Warriors a few more millions in salary and a bunch more in Luxury taxes, with the added bonus of some nonuseless bench depth.

Largely irrelevant. Jason Thompson isn't making the Warriors any better.

They're simply stepping down in salary. Look for them to trade JT to another team for another salary downgrade.

He's a very solid player that would start on some bad teams.

Averages about 10/5 while shooting 500%

No he's not changing the west but he adds depth to their front court. He actually does allow them to play small ball though and is a good replacement for D.lee.

He's about that same level, can't say he's better than them.

    Thompson's played on bad teams,
so either a good team can make him look even better (what we hope isn't the case, Ex: Spurs additions),
or being on a good team means he's even further down on depth chart.

Looks like you said, depth filler and injury insurance. A good use of their trade assets

Terrible basketball player. Reminds me of Vin Baker and Shareef Abdur Rahim, but he is even more terrible than those guys.

    Not a winner.

Gladly take battletested Chuck Hayes over Thompson to make an impact on a big game one thousand times before I'd take this scrub loser.

Jason Thompsom is a 10/5 player on the freaking Kings. I followed the kings a lot back in the day. This is a marginal player

And to say he replaces David Lee is misleading

    Because Lee never really played

Please don't say he helps small ball when Bogut and Ezeil got less than a combined 20 minutes in some of those LeBron-adjustment games
