I didn't say anything about the guy who was killed, just the guy who ran a red light and darted out in front of me.

Stop trying to pick a fight.

How long has this event been going on? I've lived in Houston for most of my life and this is literally the first I have heard of it.

Quite a while. If you don't spend time downtown on the last Friday of the month you'll probably never encounter it.

Yeah, I almost never spend time downtown, so I guess I never ran into (pun intended?) this bunch. Still, I'm surprised I haven't at least heard someone complain about it before now.

Complaining about Critical Mass has been around longer than Critical Mass itself.

had you hit him, you would have had some paint scrapes on your bumper* and he would have been lucky to end up in the hospital. So there's a darwinian consequence to keep cyclists smart. Not so much with car drivers who are at fault for 90%+ car/bike collisions.

*bumper damage may vary in Minnesota or if cyclist was towing a shopping cart.

I would hope you have some facts or links to back up this ridiculous statement.

According to a recent study, 83.578% of all statistics quoted online are made up on the spot.

I'm guessing it came from this or something similar http://www.research.utoronto.ca/smart-cycling/ although I picked it up from somewhere else, I think, and I don't peer review and fact check all my cc.net posts. Apologies.

npr disputes the numbers http://www.npr.org/sections/health-...-cars-collide-whos-more-likely-to-be-at-fault as do others. So it might not be so.

But either way, it's the cyclist that gets scraped off the pavement. So that should be a pretty big deterrent to unsafe cycling. It's not the old guys cutting you off. They either smarten up, or don't make it.

I didn't make it up!!! I heard it somewhere, it fit my narrative, so I passed it on. There's a difference ;).

I guess my doubt is just stemming off of personal experiences with bikers. I have almost hit multiple bikes on the road due to them running stop signs and also coming out of nowhere at times.

hehe i love CM and the motorists who go bats**t insane with obscenities.

saw a cop give some douche a ticket last month for laying on his horn a good 30-40 seconds

Question, are bicyclists required to follow ALL the same rules as car drivers? Including not driving under the influence? Seems to me if a huge portion of these bike riders are drunk and/or high then cops should be handing out DWIs right and left...

I'm not sure if you can get a DUI unless there is a motor, but even if you can't get a DUI you can pick up a PI if you are out and about really drunk. Cops probably don't want to mess with it unless there is a problem to be honest. It's like 6th street in Austin, after midnight, almost everyone on the street is some level of intoxicated and there are cops all over the place but they don't really mess with you unless you are falling down drunk (and sometimes not even then) or you get in a fight.

It's not DWI, but a PI can certainly be given.
