I'd keep the HD-DVD player for now. Until Universal and Paramount switch over to Blu-ray, it's the only way to watch their movies. Plus it keeps you from having to repurchase all those titles on Blu-ray.

I think I'm going to go ahead and buy a PS3 for a Blu Ray player. I was willing to give Microsoft a chance to put out a Blu Ray attachment for 360. But, I've seen the light. MS isn't willing to admit defeat on HD DVD. Their stance is people don't buy consoles to watch high definition movies. Why did you put out the HD DVD attachment then? As far as I know, MS hasn't even started a project to begin developing the Blu Ray attachment. I figure it's at least a year away and probably much longer. So, I pay double now for a PS3 rather than wait a year or two for the $200 Blu Ray attachment. Big whoop. I just hate being manipulated by MS. They have really dropped the ball on this one. The reasoning they put forth to the consumer makes no sense...that they want to let the consumer choose but don't want to offer all the choices. That's the most r****ded thing I've ever heard. So, they can keep lying to themselves about how noone is going to choose a PS3 over 360 just because it has a Blu Ray player in it. That's fine. It's complete bs...but whatever.

Just watch their DVDs with a BluRay player that upconverts (I think all should). Should give you 720p, which is good enough until they cave and switch this spring.

Keeping the HD only means the resell price you'll get will continue to plummet (who would even buy it once HD is officially beta-max?) and you continue to lock yourself out of the other studios and Netflix (if you have it).

Had I received an HD player at Christmas instead of a BR, I'd have returned it the very next day.

If MSFT released a Blu Ray attachment for the 360, would that mean that Sony would be generating revenue on a MSFT accessory?

Yeah, but why even bother reselling them? It's not like the second the format war officially ends, the HD-DVDs and player will stop working.

If you only own about 10 or 20 HD-DVDs, I guess it makes sense to unload them. But I've got close to 200, so there's no way I'm replacing them with Blu-ray versions barring better video and/or audio quality.

Well, I went with both HD DVD and Blu Ray. I don't like the fact that Netflix is going exclusive since some titles ONLY come in HDDVD and I like the fact that I can have Blu Ray first, HDDVD second, and Standard DVD third for all my movie choices.

Oh well, at least my Toshiba HDDVD player upconverts standard DVDs extremely well, so it'll be my standard DVD player for my collection.

In your case, I agree, makes no sense.

If someone just has a player + a dozen movies, though, they can get some money back to lessen the hit of a PS3/BR player. But the resell $ is dwindling as more and more HD material hits ebay and half.com. You could also just hold on to them if you've got no problem with multiple players set up.

Am I the only one that sees this as a great time to buy HD DVD. Why not pay 120 for hd dvd player with 7 free movies which practically pay for the player. Then wait a year until blu ray drops below 200. That way you are never without high definiton, can have both players for less than the price of getting a blu ray player now. Also from what I hear hd dvd is not dead because the format is cheap to produce, future computers will use hd dvd burners for creating hi def home videos and storage. Also aren't some blue ray players sold today still using old firmware that will be incomptible with newer blue ray movies. And on top of that I see some great deals ahead on movies when studio support does end completely. And you will always have a great upconverting dvd player with hd dvd unlike with blu ray.

this is absolutely correct. the hd dvd player uses the REON processor which is the best for processing standard dvds. i have a samsung upconvert, it sucks compared to my friends toshiba hd-dvd upconversion.

I'll probably go bluray once they actually figure out everything and iron out the bugs. I dont want to be downloading firmware updates all the time. once they make a decent bluray player for $199 or less I'll get one.

It depends on what $120 means to you.

That would all happen without the support of TDK and Sonic Solution (along with others?). I don't think Toshiba ever even got over the problems they were having with recordable HD DVD discs. Won't even get into any competition they'd face from PC companies supporting Blu-ray.

I don't think this is a likely scenario to say the least...

AFAIK, these older players won't allow you to use that awesome feature that allows you to IM others while watching a movie (or similar things). Basically just extra interactivity features AFAIK. If you just want to watch your movies in HD and nothing more, I think the older players will still get the job done AFAIK; it isn't like the movies won't play on these players (may have to double-check that, but I'm pretty sure about that).

Don't think this really matters much for most people, especially if you compare it to some of the popular/better Blu-ray players that are pretty good at upconverting.

Are the low-end Toshiba HD DVD players even that good at upconverting? Thought I read mixed reviews about them (the more expensive models are really good though AFAIK).

Yup the low end Toshiba's use the REON processor.

for bluray you have to read up on the dvd up conversion and processing. for example the Samsung BDP-1200 > BDP-1400 for regular dvds

What a load. How does this create the best experience for those of us with HD-DVD players? Oh well, since I got 10 free movies with purchase, I haven't really lost much getting the HD-DVD player, when I eventually get a BLU-RAY the HD-DVD can go on a secondary TV.

They do? I was under the impression only the XA2 player(the high end model of the 2nd gen players) had the REON processor. Even the A35 which is the 3rd gen high end model doesn't have the REON.

I spent a good chunk of change on the XA2 player in part because I read it had the REON processor while the cheaper models didn't.

I'm going to cancel my Netflix...NOT!

HD DVD is officially dead to me. Netflix was my only means of getting those movies given that I don't buy movies.

Actually they're no longer making the XA2, so it's expensive as hell. The A35 is cheap(around 230 bucks on Amazon), but it's an inferior upconverting player.
