Sucks for folks that bought HD-DVD over the holidays, but still good. Hopefully means this stupid 'war' is closer to being done.

I believe the PS3 is actually one of the better Blu ray players out there. I think it won best Blu ray player last year. Yes there is a Blu ray remote for the PS3 and it does upconvert DVDs

But the remote is Bluetooth so you cannot use the an All-in-one type remote control to work the PS3. There is no IR sensor which is completely r****ded because it would cost them maybe 10 cents to have it integrated.

As a Bluray player, I think it is great. I think it looks better than the HD-DVD add on for the 360. In my opinion, I think the PS3 looks better than the 360 period. This is coming from a pretty big Xbox guy.

They already have dual format players.

Yes to everything on the PS3. I'm not sure about upconversion.

It also added 1.1 support which supports HighDef Picture in Picture.

    1) There already are a couple of dual format players out there. One is from LG, but it's essentially a Blu-ray player that can also play HD-DVDs but can't handle anything else like the Picture-in-Picture features. The other is from Samsung. The only problem is these players cost a fortune. It's actually cheaper to get 2 individual Blu-ray and HD-DVD units.

    2) The PS3 is one of the best Blu-ray players on the market. If it could decode DTS HD-MA audio tracks, it would be damn near perfect. Yes it has a remote(you have to buy it separately). And it does upconvert DVDs really well after a firmware upgrade a few months ago.

As far as the WB decision, I'm glad they went with Blu-ray. The discs have 20 extra gigs of space which hopefully now means more extras, fewer discs on TV show box sets, better support for lossless audio, higher bitrates on the transfers, and no more combo titles.

Awesome- thanks for the info. Do you know what it upconverts to? 1080p would be great.

does this mean that Sony now owns the format for everything now? I would presume they would make A LOT of money with blu-ray, a whole lot.

Well this is just great. Wondering if I should try to return my HD-DVD player that I got for Christmas. It's only been played a couple times.

That's a pretty big misconception. Sony doesn't own blu ray, it's a group of companies that do. Sony gets the most attention because they stuck with that format for their next gen console and it's probably the best selling blu ray player so far.

Btw, what is the significance of WB going BR exclusive? I don't keep up with the format war. What companies are still neutral? I know there are a couple of companies who signed a one year exclusive deal with HD DVD (money hat). What do you think those two companies will do after their deal is up?

well if Blu-Ray has won out by that time, then obviously those companies will switch to Blu-Ray

The war was over a while ago. With Microsoft's money HD DVD has fought on for a while to confuse the market.

I just got my first blu ray player during the holiday season. Now I'm glad that I didn't go the HD DVD route even though they were cheaper.

Hell yes, finally Blu-Ray wins and its settled once and for all.

Now I give people another reason to get a PS3 instead of a 360.

I meant, if they'll go back and support both formats or just one? There's still money to be made with HD DVD. I guess, with the small adoption rate so far, it might not be that big of a deal.

There are already dual-format players out on the market. Samsung just put out one that sells for around $800.

PS3 is IMO the best blu ray player out there. It has the hardware support for profile 1.1 and 2.0 and hence can be upgraded via firmware. Sony made a blu ray remote for PS3, and yes it upconverts better than any of the DVD upconverters out there.

yes the ps3 does upconvert. PS3 is a fine machine in itself.
