I agree with this because we added Ward as well, so we have two consistent pure 1s in Lue and Ward. Sura can now be a wildcard to mix things up, but we can take him out if he is hurting us.
Think about the Ward signing. I suspect Ward is going start to play with Yao. When Yao is out, Sura will replace Ward to play with Tmac, then we start running&gunning.
Thanks Swopa for providing a perspective from someone who saw him day in and out, instead of a few samples from his best games. I have the reverse opinion. I don't like anyone individually but together I think they should be adequate. Detriot played Billips, Hunter and James/Atkins effectively, and I am not compare our quality with theirs, but it shows if guys know there roles they can be effective. No way, Lue is the most consistent of the bunch. Sura is there as a wildcard and Ward is there for consistency in the back-up spot if Sura is throwing the team off. But Lue is mainstay and will play the most 1 minutes.
Sura really should be a better shooter. His shooting mechanics are textbook; his percentages aren't. He either doesn't practice enough or has a hitch in his shot that I can't see. Good, energetic defender though. Really best suited as a combo guard off the bench.
I like Lue as well. But my point is, we won't be tradeing Sura or Ward. To me, lessening the logjam would be more beneficial than holding onto so many point guards. Lue is the only one we could trade out of the bunch.
I think Sura will be used as a swingman who can also handle the ball if needed...his role wont be as point guard but as a versatile 2 or 3 who can score and pass...our PGs are likely Ward and Lue, and I think Ward will be the starter but not see as many minutes as Lue...
As long as Van Gundy has a role in mind for these players and they accept it and execute it we will be ok. This team's offense will be built around Yao, TMac and JHoward. The defense will be built around JVG's system- play it hard or get in the dog house fast. JVG hates turnovers (see SF) and the new PG will take care of the ball or play elsewhere.
I am not very impressed by Bob Sura despite the great games he had for the Hawks. I live in Georgia and see way more hawks games then i would like to, the only two games worth watching would be the rockets games. Sura put up good numbers for an awful team. The Hawks made Jason Collier look like an allstar because they have nobody on the team. Maybe he will be a productive player for us next year but I wouldn't count on it. It is more difficult to put up numbers for a winning ball club. He unfortunately was the best pg option on the free agent market left. The only bright spot about Sura is that he can play both guard positions so depth outside of center is no longer a major concern. As for Ward, he is the new Mark Jackson.
Darkwarrior you just hit the nail on the head. Sura will be a huge energy spark off the bench. Imagine Sura, Boki and T-Mac in at the same time, alot of fastbreaking.
Now we don't have to worry about Defense at the 2. The sG position is the hardest one in the nba to defend. Think about how many fast SGs there are in the league. With T-Mac, Jackson, and Sura, we will never have to worry about being about to defend the 3 and the 2 well. We are a very versitile team. We just need to add attitude at the 5.
I think it's a NICE pick-up! I like both of them & they add depth 2 the team. Now, they can concentrate on gettin a center!
Sura will be a "poor-man's" Jon Barry for the Rockets... play some back-up SG, some back-up PG, provide a spark on offense and defense. Probably get numbers somewhere between what he did in ATL and what he did in DET (as long as he stays healthy... probably the biggest concern with him IMO). Comparing what he can do to what HOU got from previous backup SGs the last few years I think he is a pretty good addition.
I'm pretty sure both signings were dirt cheap. Ward is most likely getting the veteran's minimum ~$1.2 million, and Sura probably gets the remaining piece of the MLE. I don't think Sura was attracting any interest on the open market this season.
Slim Sura and MoTay will beat everybody else's second unit. Now which back up centre will compliment these two?
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=1855721 ESPN article on the trade. sorry if its been posted.
I watched several Sura's game after he went to Atlanta. He sure is a good bench player, can bring some energy off the bench, make points, rbs and ass. but i can't picture him as a good pg starter. he can't handle the ball very well IMHO, JVG won't like that. he is also a kind of player that needs to have ball in hands. may take more shots than necessary. anyway, good bench player if he is cheap. BTW: anyone knows how much he and ward were signed?
