I think we can expect the rotation to be split down like this...

    PG- Ward (23 mpg)/ Lue (20 mpg)/Sura (5 mpg)
    SG- TMac (38 mpg)/ Sura (10 mpg)
    SF- Jackson (32 mpg)/ Nachbar (14 mpg)/ Sura (2 mpg)
    PF- Howard (28 mpg)/ Taylor (20 mpg)
    C- Yao (35 mpg)/ ??? (13 mpg)

I think Ward will start because he understands Van Gundy's system the most. Lue would be a pretty good back up point guard. Since Sura is a tweener I see him splitting his 17 mpg between the three spots he can play at. Van Gundy has also ready stated that Nachbar will see more of an important role next year so his time will increase, but by how much is up to him. I'm hoping that a rotation like this can work out because our bench would be pretty decent. Can any of how you really complain now that our bench looks like this...

    BENCH
    Tyronn Lue
    Bobby Sura
    Bostjan Nachbar
    Maurice Taylor

Our only weak spot is that we are missing somebody to spell Yao.

Just a thought.....now that we have Sura and Ward it would make Lue expendible.

Perhaps the Rockets could then turn around and trade Lue to the Sonics for Antonio Daniels. Seems the Sonics are doing everything they can to get another backup PG and rid themselves of Daniels.

AD would be our PG with Ward as the backup. Sura would be the backup 2 guard and of course could play some PG at times as well.

Then we could trade Pike for Mutombo to fill the backup center spot.

Our roster could look like this.

    Daniels/Ward
    McGrady/Sura/Gaines
    JJ/Nachbar
    Howard/Taylor/Spoon
    Yao/Mutombo

    Thoughts?

If Charlie Ward is going to be the starting PG, this team is in trouble. I think he was signed as insurance, in case a trade comes up where one of our PG's will be dealt. In my mind, Ward is about the equivalent of Mark Jackson last year...all he's got left to provide this team is a veteran presence.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Ward or Gaines cut after pre-season if there isn't another trade. I mean do we really need 4 PG's on the roster?

I think Sura will eventually start.
Charlie Ward should see the same amount of pine as he saw in San Antonio.

I would be very surprised if Sura plays less than Ward and Lue. I think MoT and JHoward will play some minutes at Center. I think TMac will play some time at the 3.

why would they cut them? You have to carry 12 players and Gaines and Sura are SGs too

    Yao
    T-mac
    JJ
    Howard
    Lue
    Gaines
    Pike (or Mutombo)
    Sura
    Mo T
    Spoon
    Ward
    Boki

Griffin can get an injury and Wilks will not get a contract or he will get an injury.

    that is 12 players

    Willis,

I think we will get Mutumbo.
I mean, heaven forbid the Rockets get another ex-Knick.

Maybe he'll teach Yao how to wave his fingers in Shawn Bradley's face.

It's almost as if something is better than nothing. I'm willing to go to camp with Lue and Ward battling for the start. I'm interested to see how Lue does with a better starting unit than he had in Orlando.

Regardless, I think it was important for us to improve our overall ballhandling as a team. You have a much better chance of scoring when your team has the ball.

I think Sura is a decent backup for McGrady at the 2-guard spot. We're probably looking more for Taylor as the primary scorer for our second unit anyway.

That said, I'm looking forward to more transactions. But after this one, I wouldn't be crushed if this was it for our guard situation.

right now we look like this:

    yao-taylor
    JH-spoon
    tmac-boki-ag
    jj-sura-pike
    lue-ward-gains

ward fits better with the rest of our starters and lue fits better with the bench unit. i doubt that ward starts though.

the only things left to do is find a center and lose a PF. i don't see JVG trading spoon. my bet would be on mo being traded (if we can find someone to take him).

    Charlie Ward and Bob Sura.

Why doesn't CD go out and get the rest of the 1993-94 FSU team.

    Trade for Cassell.
I am sure Rodney Dobard is pumping gas somewhere these days and Doug Edwards is inside working the counter.

Just because they could not live up to Dick Vitale's prediction of a final four run that year doesn't mean they are not NBA material.

Agree 100%, takes two to tango. Bulls need another point guard like a hole in the head, especially not a role player like Lue. I think the scenario that plays out is Eric P. for Deke, I hope Deke sees it as an opportunity to finish his career with a contender and forces Chicago to trade him to Houston. CD, work those phones.

I'd be good with this, but I'm not thinking it's very likely. Maybe the Deke part.

Sorry, Jack, Sura shot worse than 30% 3 times and only shot better than 35% once in his 9 years career. He is a below average shooter. Also, he is a sub-70% FT shooter. Not good for a PG, especially at crunch time when the ball-handler gets fouled intentionlly.

I'm liking this signing. It gives us depth, and stability at probably the most important position, Point.

Role players is what the Rockets needed, and that's what the Rockets got.

    PG - Ward/Lue/Gaines
    SG - T-Mac/Sura
    SF - Jackson/Nachbar/A. Griffin
    PF - Howard/Taylor
C - Ming/Mutumbo (If the Piatkowski for Mutumbo deal goes through, which I hope does)

That's a pretty solid lineup. One must understand that the Rockets don't need 'name' players at every position.

Ward is more than servicable at the Point. He'll run the offense, get the ball where it needs to go, and knockdown the occasional jumpshot.

After years with Steve 'Dribble dribble out the shot clock' Francis, I can live with Ward. My blood pressure will be down this season with Ward running Point. ;)

Plus, I'll safely wager that Ward can run a fast break better than Francis, also a plus.

Sura is a great back up to T-Mac. He can do just about everything, score, dish and rebound. Not too shabby.

I hope the Rockets pull the trigger on the Piatkowski for Mutumbo deal, as I think it would be a great pickup.

Sure, Mutumbo is 39560269 years old, but when healthy, he's still a force in the middle, who can get rebounds. With 'Charmin' soft bodies Yao, Howard and Taylor in the paint, Mutumbo's toughness is needed.

Isn't he in the last year of his deal as well?

Win win situation to me then.

Piatkowski for Mutumbo, then the Rockets offseaon will be complete.

    :) :) :) :)
