American rules for eating: 1. Do not eat human meat. 2. Do not eat an endangered or protected species. 3. Do not eat a patriotic symbol. 4. Do not eat an animal if it's against the law. 5. Do not eat deadly, dangerous, or tainted food (mad cow, salmonella, etc.) 6. Chew with your mouth closed.
Hey I didn't know you were a Marine Biologist. If you're not, how could you make this statement? Do you know how often they breed? How old do they need to be to breed? What is the survival rate of the off spring? The page I just read showed their numbers to be around 800,000. And in the North Pacific their numbers are around 28,000 on the high side. This is low enough that the International Wildlife Coalition considers them Protected Stock in this region. With the numbers that low, 900 animals a year could certainly make a difference in that region. If that animal no longer exists there, who knows what effects that could have on other wildlife in that area of the world?
Well, I'm glad you asked... http://luna.pos.to/whale/jwa_v8_suzu.html That's for the meat itself. I'm sure you can add 500 calories and about 40g of fat to that if they turn it into a fast food burger or something.
We need to genetically engineer a smaller whale that we can breed like cattle and build giant tanks that stretch for miles to act as whale ranches. . .
If they're cute. Denis Leery had a great bit about how we decide what animals to eat. It went something like this. Butcher: So what are you? Otter: I'm an otter and I look really cute and do human like things with my paws and float on my back. Butcher: You're free to go. Next. Butcher: So what are you? Cow: I'm a cow. Butcher: GET THE F*(K ON THE G*DDAMN TRUCK!
Wow that would be great especially so I can dress up as a whaleboy for Halloween and take my vacation at the dude aquaranch on the anual spring whale drive. It would be even cooler if the whaleboys rode dolphins and Redwing flippers.
OK smarty, I never said I was a marine biologist, the information I got was from an info page on the net I read or did you skip the first part of my post? And who knows the exact population anyway? I have read articles where the population is estimated to be as low as 550,000 to as high as 1.8 million but I will admit most sites I have seen are around the 800,000 you mentioned. Nobody knows the population for sure though. They are the most abundant of the baleen whales and they inhabit all parts of the oceans and seas except the polar regions. The gestation period for these whales is about 10 months and these whales reach maturity in about 2 years so they reproduce fast considering their size. Given their quick reproducing period, I think 900 can be made up after one year. If the population is lower than stated or believed to be then yes 900 a year can hurt not only the population but ecosystems as well. Maybe they should change it to something like deer hunting where the limit changes every year based on population estimates? I am not for it but Japan and other whaling nations have found that loophole and they use it, nothing I can do about it. * All information I have posted was read on the web one place or another, if you would like links please tell and I will post. I am not a marine biologist and never claimed to be so if you need links to see where I get this information please let me know.
Actually Snoop did a remake of that song so he is right too. You just said name that song, not artist.
