As a former stand up comic who is white, I can tell you that a double standard does INDEED exist.

I had conversations with all races of comics, and this was a topic we talked about a lot.

Ask AB, he will give you the straight dope.

Native Americans aren't around because they couldn't do the work blacks were forced to do. But this whole argument is silly anyway.

Wow. I'd like to see you provide documentation to back this one up. Or did you just pull it out of your ass?

Yeah, you're right, the Spainish never tried to enslave the natives. I've never learned that in college. And it only makes sense to travel thousands of miles for slave labor when you have an abundant source right here. It all makes sense. I just pulled that out my ass.

    Pgab,

Dude, that is some of the most racist dribble I have ever read. American Indians were not capable of doing the work?

    Huh?

Please explain what you mean, as it sounds horribly racist.

He's neither out of control nor wrong. And especially not racist. Or at least his comment wasn't.

The Spaniards needed slaves. The Indians were their first try, but they died too soon/easily. They were consumed by disease and being overworked. Enter the African slave.

You don't want a debate over who has the more tragic history? What about these statements:

Sure sounds like a "Who has had it worse" contest to me.

And regardless of how you think it would be just as wrong for them to make racist jokes about Asians, you and I both know that you would not feel as outraged as you do for blacks, for whatever reason. There is most certainly a double standard in regards to humor, as has been pointed out at length in previous posts.

What exactly do you disagree with? Please tell me what isn't true or at least generally accepted history. Why do you think Africans were brought over here. What is the logic by not using Native Americans. Are you telling me that the Euruopeans respected Native Americans so much so that they tried to kill them off. Since I don't know what I'm talking about school me or don't respond.

It's not funny because there is no joke.

What exactly is it making a joke about? Making fun of? Hey look, we once had African slaves in the world? Where exactly is the humor in that again?

There's nothing wrong with off-color humor at all...when there's an actual joke involved, that is.

    Native American Slavery

This is the first web site that popped up on Yahoo when I typed in Native American Slavery. You guys are the ones who need to go back to history class. I'm quite in control.

You know, I can understand why people might have gotten upset with my first post but I really don't understand the reaction to the second. When you study slavery in the early American colonies you have to look at it from a purely economic stand point. My question has nothing to do with race relations or politics or whatever. My question is simply why do you think the Spainish, Dutch, and Portuguese went to the trouble of bring slaves from halfway around the world when they could have more affordably enslaved the native population of the Americans? What's wrong with that question? Its purely economic. Which is cheaper? After all, we are talking about cheap labor. So I may have been crude in my first post, but part of that was the stupidity and crudeness I was responding to, but I really don't understand the problem with the second post. There has to be reasons why the African slave trade developed.

One of the first things I learned in an African American studies course is that racism and bigotry against blacks are the result of slavery. Most people think its the other way around, that the hatred of blacks resulted in Slavery. But slavery was a purely economic institution. When people began to question the merrits and the tragedy of the slavery, then the people who were supportive of slavery began to use excuses like blacks are sub-human or blacks are hethens, therefore slavery is justifiable.

So to make a long story short, I really don't understand the problem you have with my second post. Its a valid question.

I agree with RM95, there is no double standard. I've seen white stand up comics say things about other races that is comparable to what black might say about others and offend a certain sector. White comics can say whatever they wish, just as black comics can.
