It's so funny, this sums up basically how I feel as well. It's certainly not "fair-weather-fan-itis," as I mentioned before...I've cheered on far worse Rockets teams in the past. What I refer to as the glory days of this BBS were the years where it was Mobley and Steve basically dicking around (Freudian slip?) and the rest of the scrubs on that team. The BBS was GREAT at that time because the only people there WERE the long-time Rockets fans. But you're right...the Rockets lose and I half-expect it, and they win and I don't share in the euphoria I used to. And you hit on something in your post that made me sad but I completely agree: a lot of us have been getting used to losing in the playoffs, and I still haven't seen anything this year that's going to get us substantially farther than we've been the past five years. We very well might make it out of the first round this year...but I wouldn't bank on it. We are one of the most unathletic, slowest, and injury-prone teams I've ever watched. We have veterans that we can't count on. Experience only goes so far.
not for me. we sucked 4 of the past 5 games and i still look forward to every game almost religiously.
I feel more like I have become addicted to a soap opera. What will Morey do? What does Les think? Will Adelman stay? Will TMac play?
agree with a lot of people here and also scyman. We use to watch a lot more games together but this season I just havent been as into the Rockets as the past. When they lose I just go oh well now and don't get into a emotional down like I use to. I think it might be also I am so busy now with work and school that I pay a lot less attention to the NBA in general. It does seem strange how even though we kinda sucked, the Francis/Mobley years were that much more fun to watch. Maybe it's just the lack of effort the team is putting forth so far. Why should we be so involved and hyped up if the players arnt.
A person who has a "waning interest" in the Rockets would not take the time and effort to log onto this web-site to write about it. Let's see: you're up to speed on all the latest trade rumors and still watch the games. The "waning interest", I think is a defense mechanism - you expect another punch to the gut (ie: Yao breaks another leg) this season, so you tell yourself, I am not "attached to this team". Yet your actions indicate otherwise. Just my take.
I believe the intensity of good fans is reflected in the soul of the team. I hate to admit it. That blowout in Game 7 in Dallas sticks deep in my mind of this team's soul... I just see no growth from that. It's like the principals are used to/expecting trades as a solution to our problems instead of them looking at themselves and improving their weaknesses.
Hell yea my interest has decreased this season. even though we have a better record, this season feels a LOT like the 05-06 season when T-Mac had his back spasms. I watched about 5 rockets games that year. I'm solely putting the blame on T-Mac. His disinterest and atrocious play rubs off on his teammates and fans. Everyone keeps saying to wait till he's healthy, but I firmly believe he'll have his 6-17 shooting games in the playoffs. At this point I'd rather us trade T-Mac for players who consistently produce and play every game. When the Landry - Charlie V rumor broke I half wanted to do that deal just because it would spice up the team
i've realized how the regular season doesn't matter at all so I dont care about one game more than another. all i want us to do is make the playoffs (seed doesn't matter) healthy and based on pure talent we can go deep. health is much more important than seeding so long as we make the playoffs.
The whole "regular season doesn't matter" way of thinking is a HUGE reason why my interest has waned so much. If the regular season doesn't matter, then why even watch the games? BTW, we've said "the regular season doesn't matter, just get into the playoffs" for the last 4 years now and what has that line of thinking got us? 3 first round exits and a lottery season. The regular season DOES matter.
Where were you guys when we won 22 straight when Yao was out at the middle of the streak? You guys are pathetic. Bandwagon fans, fair weather fans, whatever. The only time I have ever questioned my Rockets fanhood was during the Pippen tenure. Thank goodness he didn't stay long. That said, I do feel my interest in the NBA declining, not because of the Rockets problems but because of the league slowly turning into pro wrestling type entertainment. That makes me sick. I want honest basketball competition. I don't -- LISTEN STERN, I DON'T -- want anybody pushing "superstars" or "super teams" to me. I don't care about LeBron or Kobe or KG or Wade or the Celtics-Lakers rivalry. I don't care about the so-called "image" of the league. I just want honest high level basketball competition. What they are doing is just dumbing down the fan base. That infuriates me.
I have been ranting about this for a long time. Why would anybody want a 6-month long regular season only to eliminate less than half of the teams? And the division champ thing is even dumber. Stern has done some good things to promote the league. But he has been too obsessed with marketing and has totally forgotten the game of basketball is actually a sport. He needs to be fired right about now. We need some reform minded leader to fix pro basketball.
I lived and breathed Rockets basketball last year and I realized all it got me was another heartbreak in the 1st round. This year I've been really losing my interest a lot. I haven't even watched all the games. Every time I'm in the Rockets chatroom it seems like we're losing to some **** team. I can't put my finger on it either, but I think I might be losing my general interest in the NBA as well, especially when the league has gotten to the point where you can flop all over the court, but you can't wear your socks too high or too low. I'm not going to cash in my Rockets fan-dom by any means, but I just get emotionally attached like I got last year. Every time it seems like this team is starting to show that it is ready to compete, they show up and lay a huge egg.
I can identify with this for the most part, especially the bolded part. I would like to add that the poor officiating in the league has really affected my passion for the game. The playoffs last year totally disillusioned me and I haven't seen anything so far this year to make me feel better about the level of officiating. It kills me that the Lebrons of the league get away with murder and get all the calls. I could be wrong (it happened once before), but I think if the league does not address this they are going to loose even more fans.
I haven't been able to catch any games since January of last year. All I am able to see are the boxscores online and what I read here (from the level-headed posters anyway). I'm still very interested, but from what I can see, things aren't looking too good.
to be perfectly honest.. it's not the poor play or high expectations... it's the quality of officiating that's turning me off. Why root for a team when you know the refs aren't going to let it happen. I thought getting rid of Donaghy might help but it seems worse now. NBA OFFICIATING is the worst of all major sports by far. Sometimes I feel like I am watching a high school game on how bad some calls are.
Our record is fine, our standing is understandable considering the injuries. It's not like the rest of the western conference, besides the lakers, is leaving us behind. They're not on a higher level than we are. However, my interest has waned because the players don't seem to care. I've cheered my ass off for lottery teams. I've rooted for marginal players like Moochie and Sura. Maybe this team is like us, where they've been disappointed with the lack of postseason success and and just don't go all out for the regular season anymore. Maybe they just want to make the playoffs and don't care about seeding. In any case, it's not inspiring. Our guys don't care about making the all-star team. They don't care about putting up great stats or highlight plays. It seems they don't care about hustling anymore, either. If they don't care, why should I?
