Damn! I think this is great news! I can hardly get enough of Walton. I probably don't neccesarily agree with half of the things he says, but he definitely elicits a reaction, which is what I think a good announcer should do. His sarcasm and exaggarations crack me up. Some Examples: Play: Clippers throw a bad pass after a timeout. Normal Announcer: Bad inbounds pass. Walton: That was arguably the worst inbounds pass in the history of the Los Angeles Clippers franchise. Play: Cato grabbed a defensive rebound and passed it to a guard. Normal Announcer: Cato pulls down the rebound. Walton: ...Shades of Hakeem Olajuwon. What an outlet pass!!! He just has more to say than other announcers. As for Tolbert, I do not understand his appeal at all.
While I agree with you bob, please read my sig below. Still we all know who you ment. I dont mind Walton, because he is a UCLA guy and understands the game. thats more than i can say for a lot of guys doing the NBA commentary
in a playoff game in which devean george had been shooting particularly badly, lindsay hunter decided to go on a shooting spree that resulted in something ugly bricks and walton had one of the funniest comments i can remember in a while with "lindsay hunter is making devean george look like john stockton." it was great b/c it just came out of no where and was classic walton making fun of players doing really badly (i.e. the watch your face type comments). like others, i don't necessarily agree with walton all the time, but he's usually funny and even better, he'll friggin disagree with the refs every once in a while. i swear, doug collins could star at a replay of someone being body slammed and not even bring up how it was a missed call. and if it was shaq, he would just compliment his strength. man i hated doug collins (although not as much as isiah). is marv still going to be doing games? for some reason, i really started to like his announcing over the last half of last season after about 7 years of ambivalence towards it.
Back when the Rocks were battling the Spurs and it was a debate between The Dream and The Admiral for best C in the game. Walton was all on Robinson's tip. When the Spurs had that great year and Robinson beat out Hakeem for the MVP, Walton (and the rest of the media) wasn't giving Hakkem his props and during the Spur series, Walton was pro-David & pro-Spurs until Hakeem showed everyone what time it was. Agter that, Walton came around and was a preety beig Dream supporter but thats why most of the Rock fans I know hate the guy. Thats exactly what I'm talking about. Freaking Hilarious ! I was watching a Clipper game on League Pass last year when the Clipps blew a 5pt lead going into the 4th v. the Pacers and Walton called it, no lie, "The worst collapse in Clipper History." I almost fell out of my chair! Losing a 5pt lead in 12 min is a great collapse? I was just sitting there like this guy is crazy. He just takes things to the extreme and livens up the game more than a Danny Ainge, PJ, DC, etc. The only color guy who is better is the former TWolves announce who works for TNT now I believe. Any time someone made a spectacular play it sound like he was gonna have a heartattack he would get so hyped up over a play. Oh and Tom Tolbert sucks!
Ugh that would be horrible. I can see it now: Ahmad: David, what did you think of the Lakers thurough thrashing of the Nets in the finals? D-Rob: Well, both teams did super jobs and deserve to be commended. Ahmad: So, you think the Nets did well? D-Rob: Hey, they may not have won, but they did their very best and that's all that matters to me. Ahmad: Ooookay, moving on... I'll take Tolbert. I don't know why you guys hate him so much. Dude is funny. His radio show is hilarious too.
WALTON IS GREAT!!! last year, the clips were playing i think it was like the cavs or grizz or some disgusting team. well, sean rooks pulls down his, like, second rebound midway through the 4th quarter. Bill Walton: "Sean Rooks, restoring order to the cosmos! Where would the Los Angeles Clippers franchise be without Sean Rooks?" h.i.l.a.r.i.o.u.s.
Just because you learn to tolerate crappy beer doesn't hgide the fact that it's still crappy. WALTON SUCKS as an announcer. Has and always will. Seriously, the guy will never shut up. The announcers are there to guide us with words and fill in dead space in the action, not talk over the entire game. Exxaggeration is OK once in awhile to offer contrast, but Walton is just one huge stuttering hyperbole! I respect his playing experience and enthusiasm for the game, but please don't make us suffer any longer...And to make it worse, they left Snapper behind, the only guy who could keep Walton under control.
I was going to bring up that hilarious comment by Walton where he said, "Lindsey Hunter makes Devean George look like John Stockton", but someone else brought it up. Walton is a pretty lousy announcer, and his opinions are usually wrong, but he says some of the most outlandish things I have ever heard. It is Walton's ridiculous usage of metaphors and similes that prompt my friends and I to use analogies like: "Did you see that guy's 3 point shot? He makes Manute Bol look like Dale Ellis."
Walton is hilarious. He's easily my favorite national guy. "Sean Rooks, restoring order to the cosmos! Where would the Los Angeles Clippers franchise be without Sean Rooks?" Classic!
"When Jason Collier makes up his mind to go to the rim, no one can stop him!" His work on Clipper games is legendary, hopefully it will be the same w/o Jones. Also, I don't mind Tolbert - he's completely non-descript, which is probably what NBC wanted in him, and he does know some stuff. With a good lead, he could be a decent supporting member of a studio crew.
