In their wildest dreams. The most lucrative deal for an artist in the history of the business was Michael Jackson who got 9 percent of his sales. Artists on their first deal get between 2 and 3 percent and that is AFTER the record company recoups expenses from the making of the record (anywhere from $25,000 - $150,000).

man, what Wal-Marts are you going to? wal-mart is great. i worship at the altar of wal-mart (even if i don't go there that often due to one not being close enough to me in austin). everything under the sun is there and it's cheap and it's open 24 hours, how can it get any better than that? i need a 4 pack of tennis balls for 2.50? go to walmart. a cd for someone's birthday, walmart. a book of crossword puzzles for a long plane ride. walmart. they even have grocery stores in them now.

maybe i just like big companies (like mcd's, microsoft, coco-cola, nike) for some strange reason (the power they have i guess) and others don't but wal-mart is greatness in any respect.

i know i read once that big time artists can get up to $2.20 per cd sold (and that $1.60 in the price breakdown would seem to line up with that) so, unless all cd's sell for over $24 how is 9% the highest? now since i'm pretty sure you know what you're talking when it comes to music does that mean that 9% applies to something else? or is the $1.60/$2.20 thing way off?

Walmart Bites. I don't and won't shop there.

They have a well know business practice of strong arming companies into doing what they want them to do or they won't stock their products.

Levis Strauss is a perfect example. All Levis were made in the united states at a high quality. Because Walmart has such a huge market share of all retail products sold, Levis was struggling and finally subcumbed to Walmart and agreed to sell their product there. Walmart said their customers wouldn't pay for Levis quality at a premium and demanded a lower priced product to sell along side their store brand (river mountain?) at a comparable price. The only way Levis could do this was to close their American plant and have the cheaper product made else where there by ruining their quality control and putting thousands of American workers out of work.

There are many examples like this and I encourage everyone to stay away from Walmart.

I would like $10 cd's though but I'm sure it will come at the expense of the artists and not the record companies.
