I'm 40 and smoked for 20 years. I got pulled over and did far worse things than Sandra did and have never been asked to put out a cigarette. In fact, I lit up everytime I was pulled over in my youth. However, I'm a decently attractive white male with a gift to be able to speak well and that played with officers. Do I think that's fare in society? No.

Well perhaps that's your experience, but it's a very common thing for officers to ask someone to put out their cigarette. That may or may not be a lawful order, in fact, it probably isn't, but when you refuse to cooperate with a police officer and are giving them a ton of attitude, you should expect further scrutiny. That said, even then you will be fine so long as you don't do anything directly against the law like failing to comply with a lawful order.

How do you know it is a common occurrence?

I was pulled over for speeding when I was younger and the officer asked me to put the cigarette out. I then proceeded to go into a yes sir/no sir type of ass kissing but still ended up getting the ticket. Didn't end up killing myself in jail though so I guess it worked out.

In your arrogant, ignorant mind you think tens of thousands of incidents over several decades involving police and minorities are all random and isolated. You've chosen to willfully ignore reality, history, and statistics in favor of the one you've created in your warped mind. You spend all this time posting on this board, 67 times already in this thread, passing off your made up version of reality as some intelligent opinion. Boring.

People like me are interested in a better, stronger society. People like you are borderline sociopaths. So I'm good.

He has extensive statistics on the matter, like he does with all his opinions. Show 'em Bobby.

SMH. It's just really sad when simple minded people such as these two try and tackle issues that are above them. It's people like these two that make me support abortion.

are you high? the ****ing cop was being aggressive with her and hostile.. now that is uncalled for!

she had every right to stay in her car. He got all stupid with her for not putting out her cig.. at that point what law did she break for him to want to light her up and remove her from her car..

I think this is a big part of the problem, I have no doubt that you believe that she had every right to stay in her car, but you'd be wrong. People these days tend to think they have all sort of rights that they don't actually have.

You do not have the right to ignore a lawful order from a police officer.

A fallacious sense of entitlement won't change that....as Bland quickly found out.

There is actual lingo for being put in jail for talking back at an officer and it's called being "locked up on a humble" and IT IS ALL ABOUT EGO AND PRIDE BEING DAMAGED.

Eye opening interview btw and I suggest bigtexxx, bobby etc to watch the interview. Michael Wood is an former Marine grunt such as myself and an ex-Batlimore cop.

Bobby listen to the interview. Perspective. You lack it.

Unfortunately Bobby won't watch the video because he blocked me. Apparently I made his feelings hurt even though he made an argument that I am not 'intelligent' because I served in the Marine Infantry(how patriotic of him) also I'm going to make an assumption that posters like bigtexxx or bobby will have a preconceived bias and lambast the source (The Young Turks) as an ultra liberal source. However, the source being ultra liberal is irrelevant because the individual who is making these rather eye opening statements about police culture has CONSIDERABLE CREDIBILITY.

LOL Bobby and Texx are douchebags.

You think they care about anything other than being total dickheads in every single debate that occurs in this forum?

One problem I have with the situation... She was obviously unstable and should have been closely monitored by the police.

Did she have sheets on her bed? I assume not considering that she hung herself with a trash bag. If you are going to "suicide-proof" a room, why leave a trash bag in the room?

I assume she could have done the same with her clothing but it would have at least been more difficult.

She seems to have been a caring and composed enough person both during and following a materially stressful and uncomfortable situation; you seem to be injecting class, behavioral and motivational traits based solely on misdemeanor charges which could have stemmed from all kinds of logistical or temporary financial factors.

I'm incredulous that some people think it is suspicious behavior to express irritation at being pulled over.

Has anyone been happy to be pulled over for a traffic violation?
