    I'll keep it simple..

I've had trouble waking up on time in the mornings for 18 years now (I'm 23). I found out recently that I've had this problem since I was a child.

Then there was university, and I suffered there because I missed way too many classes.

I had a job before this one which did not have set timings, so I rarely had to be in office early in the morning.

9 months ago, I started a job where I have to be up at 6:30am everyday. It's been hell, and I've had lots of issues with timing.

I haven't done it (woken up consistently on time) for 18 years. Even when I sleep on time. Wake up half an hour earlier. It doesn't make a difference. When you respond, please try to consider whether or not I would have heard your advice at some point in these 18 years.

I can't do it. No matter how long I sleep. I've tried tons of alarm clocks. I just don't trust them now. If I absolutely have to wake up, I get someone to do it in person. But even then, a lot of times I will get extremely ANGRY despite knowing that I asked them to wake me up.

Over 18 years, you can rule out a lot of things (like diet, laziness, lack of commitment). I genuinely make the effort. But now I'm looking for other solutions.

Can it be a medical thing? Anyone else have this problem? What can I do?

Give me advice. It's making me wonder if I'll ever be able to keep a job without this problem. It's really worrisome. Believe me I've tried almost everything. It just doesn't seem normal to me, it's not something where I just need to sleep earlier or more or wake up earlier.

The only way I can control this is by sleeping right after work (around 6 or 7pm) and waking up whenever (usually around between midnight and 4am) and staying up from that time all the way till work is over.

But that means I literally have no life other than work and sleep.

    PLEASE HELP ME!

definitely sounds like you aren't getting enough sleep. what time do you usually go to bed? i was like that when i was younger, pretty much because i never had to learn to wake myself up until i went to college. i still am like that in sense i guess, because anything under 10 hours of sleep feels like 3. i require long sleep, i guess i am just more disciplined about my curfew and get 8-10 hours regularly.

i'm sure you have considered simply getting more sleep if you have really tried everything, so know that i'm not trying to be insulting by oversimplifying. even if you are already getting 8 hours, maybe try getting 12 for a few nights and get into a rhythm, see if that has an impact.

I had a similar problem so I went to see a sleep specialist. Turned out I had sleep apnea and since I wasn't getting a quality sleep at night I had a terrible time waking up in the mornings. You could also have a problem like hypersomnia or maybe even narcolepsy. I would recommend seeing a sleep specialist.

LOL! Being late in the mornings is not a medical problem. If it were, that'd be my excuse every morning for work. You can do it, but it just seems like you don't want to. Not trusting alarms, getting angry at people you tell to wake you up, ect. Sounds like you hate mornings to the extreme.

    - Don't trust alarms because they haven't worked, even bunches at a time.

    - Get angry at people but don't even remember doing it. I'm told later.

    - Believe me, I want to wake up. I don't hate my job - despite my timing issues, I almost always outperform everyone at my level and I enjoy that.

    farrisdabis,

Sounds good. Now I need to find a sleep specialist, which will be tough.

    shipwreck,

What if I need 11 hours of sleep a day? I'm going to live like that forever? If I have to wake up at 6:30am, and I need 10 hours, that means sleep at 8pm. I get home around 7pm everyday.

    lbpman,

I'm around 5'8, 165lbs. Before my knee surgery (3 months ago) I worked our very regularly (sports, weight lifting). Love some fast food, but have cut back drastically in the last year, and have cut it out in the last 3 months.

Do you eat before bed? Try not eating like at least 4 hours before bed. You will wake up because your hungry.

    Tried it. No difference.

List of unsuccesful things I've tried:

    - Exercise
    - Sleep early
    - Coffee, Red Bull
    - Regular meals, breakfast
    - 5 alarm clocks at a time
    - People waking me up (as mentioned, i get angry and don't remember it)
    - Lots of water
    - Sleep a lot
    - Sleep a little
    - tire myself out before sleep (go out, exercise, etc)
    - Air conditioning, no air conditioning
    - Nap in the afternoon
    - Wake up 4 or 5 hours before work (I always end up sleeping again)
    - Quit smoking
    - Quit drinking

It's not a motivation issue either. If, say, I'm on vacation and people wake up early to do stuff, I'll sleep in. On days off, I'll sleep 12-15 hours and I'll still be sleepy the rest of the day.

I have the same problem. In fact my whole life has been arranged from avoiding the morning hours between 7AM-12 noon. In college all my classes started after 3PM and would go on till 9PM. At work, I volunteered to take the "Tokyo hours" for my firm, thus I am at work right now.

I sleep around 6-8 hours, but I have a really tough time in the morning hours even when I tried really hard for some time. I function much better at night, and most of my best thinking comes after the sun goes down.

I think I might have given up on the mornings.

I'm not really lazy, as I generally am the hardest worker in school or office, but I have always had a hard time functioning in the mornings. All throughout grade school, high school, college and work.

Alot of times even if I get 6-8 hours of sleep and I try to wake up at 8AM or so, I end up taking a nap soon after I wake up even if I got a full night's rest. Its frustrating, but good to know there is someone else like me. I've never really met anyone else with this same problem.

Have you tried things to fix it? How old are you?

Did you get to a point where you felt like "What does it matter if i sleep or not, I'm going to be f'ed up in the morning anyway."

It sounds like you really have tried everything. At this point I think that a doctor is the way to go. Do you have insurance?

At what time did you go to sleep the last time you had this trouble, and at what time did you wake up? Do you have a regular routine in the morning, and do you wait until the last minute to pick your clothes?

This is the story of my life.

I got a sonic boom alarm clock. It literally will shake the room it is so damn loud. I put it across the room so I have to get out of bed to hit snooze. Then it goes off again. Repeat.

After about half an hour that loud thing gives me such a headache I can't go back to sleep.

When I lived with my parents, my mom would say I would scream at her and I had no recollection.

My dad said he used to be the same way. I believe it's something that goes away with age. (I'm 23 also.)

Until about 2 years ago, I was like that all my life. I had the loudest alarm ever, but I would turn it off in my sleep. I slept through literally everything, I was a deep sleeper and never woke up when I was supposed to no matter how much sleep I got. Mornings were terrible. I always had a splitting headache.

I know I was lucky because it was a relatively easy fix for me, but I placed 3 loud alarm clocks all around my room. It forced me to get up so I could turn them off. I guess I'm not one to sleep walk because it always woke me up. Honestly I like waking up early now. It's somewhat refreshing.

Ehsan, you and I weigh the same and are the same height.

I was going to call you the "L" word I am famous for... but you haven't answered my questions... :D

I also hate to wake up, see my alarm clock go off at 6:00 and I sleep a little more. My wife will hit me on the shoulder and say: "Are you going to work? It's 6:15... the alarm went off already..." and in my half-asleep state I will answer "Yesssssmmm... I'm goingmmm... inmmm... ok...?" and then snooze once more... I then wake up at 6:20 and start getting ready...

I've ALWAYS been cranky if I don't get enough sleep, but I guess that with work during the week and plenty to rest on Friday or Saturday night, I can get my sleep back on the weekends. If I don't sleep enough the day before, I have a hard time on the drive home from work, I can't stay up playing with my daughters, or can't stop from snoozing off while watching a movie with them... I had to put a stop to that for good.

Here's what's worked for me to prevent this:
    - don't eat TOO MUCH before going to sleep, else you will get extremely hungry in the morning
    - set a time to go to sleep early... gradually go to sleep earlier than that...
    - stop getting on the computer late at night to chat, or watching TV shows/movies you have already watched... go to sleep!
    - take a shower at night if you're not already doing so, this will help your body feel cooler at night
    - work out just before you eat lightly at night, so you can take a shower and rest easily

Like I said, those have worked for ME.

Pretty sure he listed each one of those as things he's already tried. I guess some people are just to LAZY to read the thread.
