I can see it now. Daryl Morey calls Von Wafer's agent: Morey: Hey, how's it going? Agent: Great. We're about to sign with Memphis. Morey: Really? Well, one of our players got injured so we've got a spot for Von. Agent: Oh yeah? How much? Morey: How much is Memphis giving him? Agent: [insert some small number] Morey: Yeah, sure, we can match that. Agent: I'll check with Von. Von: HECK YEAH!!! Agent: Okay, done. Morey: Tell the Memphis GM I said "hi".
Man, y'all are making too much out of this if you think a minimum wage guy signing means Rockets have to make a deal to clear up room for him. They don't have to play him any more than they did Pops Mensah Bonsu. Not to say the Rockets don't have a trade lined up, but a minimum wage signing means very little.
waive wafer before non-guaranteed contracts become fully guaranteed? i assume they're signing him to a non-guaranteed deal.
I assume he will get minutes, or he would have signed with Memphis if he wasn't expecting to. I'd love the team to move Battier just to get another player to get the ball out of Ariza's hands.
If I were Tmac and Battier, I'd be worried. Although, Tmac is probably smart enough to know that he's already heading out the door. Trading Battier at this point is stupid...He doesn't play that well offensively but I think the team may unravel if Chuck or Battier go. Another thing...once Chase comes back in a few weeks, what happens with Von? They managed fine with the rotation they have...Please say DM is planning something big...
I've got a few questions: - Does this mean that Budinger's injury is more serious than just a few weeks? - Do the Rockets have zero faith in McGrady's abilities to help the team? - Is a trade imminent? I'm looking forward to the Budinger vs Wafer debates. DD, you'll have to choose a side.
True, but I think the satisfaction of punching the Memphis GM in the face (metaphorically) and re-signing someone for a lot cheaper than we might have otherwise is a pretty sweet thing.
I would think not as he's going to be an important piece on our title team. Also, Trevor's a steal on his contract. That said, anything's possible with DM running things.
The Rockets traded Menah Bonsu for nothing in hopes of getting under the LT. So I'm puzzled if the Rockets would sign Wafer just to sit at the end of the bench. I thought they're looking to shed salary right now.
I don't know how confident I'd be in that statement. Besides the fact that history indicates Yao will be injured again, the Rox don't appear to be constructing their team based upon Yao's impending return. We're getting younger and faster and definitely moving away from the steady diet of halfcourt sets.
Not sure if Morey actually enjoys tormenting Chris Wallace, his old pal from the Celtics days. I also don't think Wallace really is all that offended. It's not like Morey conspired to keep Brandon Roy from him or anything.
Anyone remember how badly Artest played after Yao went down. I don't think Wafer is going to get all those great layups with a 6'6" center.
You didn't know that the point of the more complex surgery was to prevent future injuries? Well, now you know!
i hope this time around Wafer will learn to put his EGO on the side....cuz if not the rockets do not need him
A few thoughts: 1. Even if Wafer's salary ends up carrying the Rockets over the tax line, it'll probably cost them no more than $3 or $4 mil. The organization probably determined that Wafer is worth at least that much in real economic terms, so they might as well take a chance on paying tax. 2. The organization may be more confident now about having a trade lined up to get under the tax (whether it's a simple Cook salary dump, or a McGrady deal) than they were back when Pops was around. 3. The Pops move was not strictly for tax. I think they were doing Pops a favor because Toronto wanted him and had minutes for him.
