Man, those other songs up there? I was getting REALLY pessimistic about this album. Yeah, that's completely gone now. And this is the first SINGLE? Wow. I don't know what to say. Maybe his renewed friendship with Matt Sharp lead to Matt kicking him in the head a couple dozen times.
The Blue Album was VERY polished (thanks to Ric Ocasek producing) and I think that was what made it so great. Pinkerton was produced by Weezer, and was pretty raw (by design) compared to Blue. Also a great album. I think the thing missing the most from their next 3 albums were the catchy melodies which were so prevelant on their first 2. Catchy melodies (and heavily distorted guitars) are what give Weezer their characteristic sound IMO. Sort of a Beach Boys meet The Ramones type thing. This new single has both. Hell, it even has some falsetto background vocals ala Matt Sharp. What's not to like about this song? I've seriously listened to it about 10 times already today.
I love it, but I still cannot say it is better than Pinkerton. When "Tired of Sex" comes on and you hear Rivers just moaning and screaming, you know its something special.
See I don't know if I agree. Maybe polished wasn't the right adjective. Perhaps crisp? Only in Dreams, My Name is Jonas, Holiday, those songs were just more... Straightforward than anything you find nowadays. Nothing like some honest to goodness feedback ringing in and out.
The Blue Album was simple. Simple chord progression, simple but catchy melodies, simple rhythms... They've gotten away from that simplicity. Pork and Beans is a return to it.
I was a Weezer fan through their last album and still enjoy most of their catalog, but they are partly to blame for emo, which by and large sucks donkey balls. I mean, I like plenty of songs by self-absorbed white dudes whining about girls, but Weezer and the other crappy California bands of the 90's (Blink 182, etc.) led us to a place in a lot of pop music that only contains a 13-year-old's worldview- even when the musicians making those records are really a bunch of 35 year olds in mascara (see: that dumbass on American Idol).
You can't blame them for unleashing that monster though. Did that black dude in Terminator 2 realize he was creating Skynet and creating a man vs machine war? Did Xavier realize he was creating Onslaught when he wiped Magneto's mind? Did we know Pippen was gonna gig us like he did?
Weezer did not spawn the current emo genre, not by a longshot. Fugazi and Sunny Day Real Estate were bigger influences.
The video debuted today on Youtube: <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/muP9eH2p2PI&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/muP9eH2p2PI&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
OK, that might seriously be the coolest video I've ever seen. I love all the cameos by the YouTube celebs. I got almost all the references. My GOD, when does this album come out? I will seriously be at the record store the day of. I haven't felt this way about an upcoming release from a band in over a decade. Everyone watch this video. You won't regret it.
I just noticed that when the mentos soda guy throws the goggles to Gung Ho from GI Joe, the tattoo on his chest is of a giant heart with one of the unicorns from Charlie the Unicorn aka Candy Mountain.
The first track, Troublemaker, is also available on iTunes. 8 tracks have already leaked, but I haven't looked for them yet, but if you want to hear Troublemaker, it's streamable here: <a href="http://hypem.com/track/545304">Weezer - Troublemaker</a>; look at the bottom of the page for the player.
I'm going to have to check it out. I loved Pinkerton era Weezer (by far my favorite). If you guys are saying it's "old" Weezer, then that has good written all over it. That Make Believe album though, it was a piece of crap. Very very disappointing.
I wasn't until now, but the video has me excited for the Red album. Count me in as one of those that LOVE Blue & Pinkerton, but am so-so with the others. I like songs here and there, but it's not close to how I rate the first two on an entire album basis. Evan
I pirated the Red Album, it's pretty good. 2 of the songs use the backup singer a lot. Pretty damn good songs though. I will definitely buy the album when it comes out, cause I support Weezer for sure!
Yeah, can't say I'm really feeling the song either. The lyrics just seems so juvenile. Their first three albums will always be a few of my favorite, but I don't know...maybe I've just matured some and its seems like they've been going the other direction. I just find their new stuff kind of silly, and not in a charming way like the first three. BTW, if you can't already tell, I'm in the camp that thinks the Green Album holds up well against the first two. It's extremely short, but very straightforward with no fluff. I always thought it was underrated (the single from the album ("hash pipe") was the only song I didn't like).
