I'm convinced, but I wasn't there...He is a great player...Has all the intangibles...I don't see the Titans drafting VY as Norm know ML and will do that...Who knows though... I'm 99% sure he won't be a Texan and that is going to suck as I know VY will be a great player...
A 4.5 is not slow. Steve Young reportedly ran a 4.5. And Vince is bigger and stronger, he should be harder to bring down. Sean Salzbury was on ESPN 790 today and debunked many of these anonymous scout quotes. He said that Vince made all of the throws on the "route tree", and was very accurate. There were 2 drops and 2 overthrows. He also said Vince might have the strongest arm between Leinart and Cutler. I always suspected he had a tremendous arm, but did not showcase it in games, instead relying on touch to throw a catcheable ball. Salzbury did say that there were problems with Vince's mechanics. He also said it wouldn't be wise to tinker with them much. I believe some of these "anonymous scouts" are probably doing some pre-draft posturing. They may be hoping to discredit Young in the hopes that he drops to them.
This Vince Young deal is amazing, there was the doubts about his game, there was the criticism of his choice of agent, the leaked Wonderlick score, and now some guys are going out of there to discredit his workout. Who else are these guys working for?
I could take it in stride too a mere three months after one of the most amazing performances in NCAA history!! But yeah, it amazes me how much people are willing to discredit this guy. If he was Marcus Vick, yeah. But call me the next time VY is suspended for a year, flips off opposing fans, and brandishes a weapon at a local fast food eatery. It's all because of the color of his jersey. It's pathetic.
...and a couple of months from becoming a multi-millionaire. The guy's poise & leadership skills are almost uncanny.
What a joke on Bush. If you don't think Bush can run a sub 5.0 40 then you have never ever watched him play football and shouldn't even be involved in this discussion. He could probably slip and do it. I've heard mixed things about VY's workouts. I'm going to wait wait for his individual workouts to make any evaluation. I heard he made all the throws but didn't throw a lot of the routes scouts wanted to see. They also said he was waiting for WR's to come out of their breaks before delivering the ball. I'm going to reserve judgement until he works out for Tennessee by himself and us. That's what I'll wait for. Sean Salisbury is a complete idiot.
I would put a nice amount of money that VY has a stronger arm than both Leinart/Cutler, the guy is a physical specimen. I forgot where I read it, but the author said the highlight of his workout was VY throwing a 60 yard bomb across his chest that was right on the money.
man, i saw him do that stuff IN HIGH SCHOOL! seriously...throwing way downfield on the run right on target. i remember my father looking at me like he was completely confused that someone could do that.
Bush will run somewhere in the high 4.3, low 4.4 I've heard some mixed things as well, however, all of them came from "What scouts told me..." Everyone that has written something about his workout talked about how good it was and that he threw NFL routes. Why would you reserve judgement until his personal workouts? Everyone was bashing him for not working out at the combine, he supposedly performed very well at the pro-day, I don't think we'll hear too much about his personal workouts. Sean Salsbury is a USC-alumn who praised Bush all the time, so to hear his praise for VY is a little reassuring to us VY fans. He probably wouldn't be considered a complete idiot if he was talking about how well Bush performs.
That's exactly what i think Bush will run as well. My personal opinion is that VY had an impressive workout. Even with the mixed reviews coming out I tend to believe that he had to have performed well. Who knows what throws he made and didn't. In all honesty it really doesn't matter until he does his individuals. That's when teams will address their concerns (whatever they are) and ask him to throw the tougher routes. In an open workout like that with other players and volume throwing it makes more sense that he would do basic passing. I looked and sounded like he did well in that regards. He shouldn't be penalized for not making throws he didn't have to. If I was him I wouldn't throw all the tough routes in that setting either. It's pretty much all downside because there are so many people there and you aren't going to be perfect. Plus, he'll get pro receivers when he does individuals. His 40 time was a little slower then I expected but it's not going to really matter. I look forward to hearing reports from Tennessee. I'll always consider him an idiot. I've hated Salsbury since he joined ESPN. He's like a white ersion of Stephen A. Smith. Always yelling and sounding like a fool. His opinion on Young and Bush are meaningless to me. I've always liked Mort. I think he has credibility. Sounds like like the only drawback from the workout was VY may not have thrown tough routes. If he didn't throw them then we still don't know anything so it's not really a negative but rather an unknown.
www.nfl.com has video of VY's passing drills at pro-day. A couple plays show David Thomas making the catch and exploding out of the route, he looked good (even though it was just drills).
I'm another who can't stand Salzbury (sp?). I hate the way he always argues with other sports reporters and when he's losing an argument he says, "Well, I played in the NFL!". But I remember he was offered a job as a QB coach somewhere, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. And the thing that impresses me about Bush is not his 40 time, it's his full-speed cuts. They are about as fast and sharp as I can remember seeing from a running back in a long time.
I have to like Salzbury - I think he is quite entertaining and charismatic. P.S. Per the person who posted Mel's comments - I agree with Mel on this one that people will believe what they want to and choose to interpret VY workouts which ever way suites their stance (bias, fanatic or otherwise). For now I am leaning towards us trading down and adding one or more potential asset opportunities - this will be our quickest route to success. We have way too many holes to expect VY or RB to fill instantly. There will be a latent period with RB and VY. What we don't know is if Coach Cube has a latent period as well in the form of a time table that he is/will be expected to deliver a playoffs team.
I'll check it out. I saw him some on ESPN this morning before i headed off to work and it looked like his throwing motion had changed a little. I saw Thomas on two play and i agree he looked good. He's going ot be a Wycheck type player iMO.
I'm happy for Vince. People were doubting him and he came out and had what appears to be a pretty good workout. Was it better than Cutler's? I have no idea. I'd have to be a fly on the wall in a scout's meeting to know that. But my reasons for wanting Bush have never had anything to do with Vince's potential weaknesses. It has been about Bush's potential for greatness.
