Speculations are that RAC is nearing retirement and Vrabel is next in line for DC, Chip Kellys type of offense will mean his defense will be on the field longer, and not wanting to uproot the family again after 2 years.
Maybe Vrabel just isn't into that whole San Francisco scene. I don't know if he's a good coach, but he talks a good game.
Personally, I think this is GREAT NEWS! Vrabel was a hard-nosed and talented football player, and he seems to be carrying those traits over as a coach. He has also been in the big show and knows what it takes to get there. I'm sure working with the talent we have on defense is appealing, especially given how SF has lost a ton of talent in the last year.
Mike Johnston was the face of the program, but Joseph was always the main reason Katy was successful. Johnston was a TE coach and Joseph has always been the brains of the defense
Extremely smart decision on Vrabel's part. That entire SF situation under York & Kelly has cluster**** written all over it.
You cannot accept an "in-waiting" role in the NFL. McNair's track record aside, it's churn and burn with coaches. I don't think it's a good decision. Not very far to fall if SF didn't pan out.
Convincing linebackers coach Mike Vrabel to remain with the Texans ranks as coach Bill O’Brien and general manager Rick Smith’s most pivotal move so far weeks into the offseason. Vrabel remained with the Texans, landing a hefty raise in the process after turning down Chip Kelly’s offer to be the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator. http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2016/01/retaining-linebackers-coach-mike-vrabel-instrumental-to-texans-defense/
Looks like the Texans are giving him a new contract. Good thing coaches don't count against the salary cap
I didn't factor in the whole RAC retirement angle, but I thought this is the kinda move that one makes if Vrabel really believes in the program that's being built here.
