My two cents on Gen-X being born in the 60's: the older you are the more the 70's influenced you, and that was prime time for Boomers. I was born in 73 and while I remember the 70's it was mostly through the halcyon veil of the very young. I do remember seeing Star Wars though :). So I put the bookend, in my own opinion, in the very late 60's, and conversely, experiencing the 80's and 90's you can move the other bookend up a little for late Gen-X to the early 80s. I think the early Gen-X experience was the explosion of visual media, action movies, electronica in music, the stress of cold war, neon colors, the start of the decline of smoking, Regan/Bush, watching the Gulf War live and in color.

Oh, and @nacho bidness the Xennials is an interesting bridge 'generation' that I have always gotten along with. My wife is 1981 and I have a lot of friends from that late 70s/early 80s set. Some identify as Gen X, some as Millennial.

Agree about 2020. I think it's going to be a defining moment in most American's personal lives. Gen-X had 9/11, Boomers had Vietnam, etc. 2020 is definitely a bookend.

See my previous post. I still think 1965 is a little bit too early, but it's all about how you were influenced/raised during those borderline times.

I think they're lumping 60's in there because younger WWII vets were still having kids in the 60's so that particular culture/zeitgeist permeated the household.

I was born in 65 and the 80's had the biggest influence on me and I am pretty sure most of my peer group.

I think when you were in high school has a lot to do with it because you are searching for an identity.

Hahaha my bad, I back down.

I do have friends who are Boomers and have great respect for them, they aren't all braindwashed... It's not like they pass out a Trump card at the DMV if you fall in that demo.

Exactly how I feel and think about the last 15 years or so. I think people of average intelligence (as I regard myself having) overestimate people on the lower side. It’s fascinating yet depressing that things have progressed to the point that where are at right now.
Another think I would like to add is the overwhelming amount of people that seem to deal with absolutes in regards to issues and fail to see the middle regularly.

I was born in 82 and have older sisters pull me into the forgotten X gen. Used to make digs in mid 2000s that 80s music were close to be considered the Oldies.

Damn youngster co-workers made me shut my mouth about that. :(

I'd say a Boomer had some level of consciousness pre-1968 or so. '68 is when MLK and RFK died. Woodstock was '69; moon landing was '69. Boomers had some level of development before '68/'69.

Well said. I go back a lot further than a decade. For a great deal of my life, there was no internet (although my father, and later my uncle, became involved with the ARPANET during the '70's). Somehow, I managed to thrive and to have an endless amount of fun. I was usually lucky that way.

A lot of the danger associated today with the internet wasn't imagined early on by the general public, although the ground breaking science fiction in 1984 of William Gibson's Neuromancer could be said to offer a peek inside Pandora's box. Even Gibson didn't imagine the cellphone (another invention that comes with a few serious downsides as well as the obvious upsides). He's gotten a laugh at book signings by admitting that.

There are times that social media appears to be spinning out of control. As someone who strongly believes in freedom of speech, I struggle with how it's become a dangerous weapon in the hands of a few bad actors. Most are spawned within our own country, often in the "fringes," in my opinion. However, some have foreign governments behind them attempting to attack our democracy. Depending on the companies behind the prominent purveyors of social media to police themselves during the runup to elections has been a mixed bag, at best, and that's being charitable. What to do?

Regarding Gen X’s support for Trump (although let’s be clear - we are Only speaking about white Gen Xers), part of that is due to the fact that Reagan’s message “government is the problem” was hammered into us for most of our childhood. We were told that everything the government did was wasteful and incompetent and that Democrats wanted to take our money and give it to slackers. On TV, we watched progressive hippies belittled as “bleeding hearts” and “burnouts” and were instead encouraged to emulate capitalism cultists like Alex Keaton.

For some of our generation, this message has sadly stuck and has been reinforced by the evangelical churches and the right wing media. It’s one reason why so many still think the Republican Party and trickle down policies are better for the economy even though all evidence points to the contrary.

It’s going to take a long time for people to let go of these influences completely and some may never let them go.

I must respectfully disagree. I and many other lived through Reagan and was not infected.
Even as a teen, I understood blowing the military everyday = big government.
Loving the FBI and CIA = big government.
In other words, teens knew Reagan was as dumb as Trump.

Don't speak for a a generation of brainwashed youth please. Reagan was an idiot to every teenager I hung out with.
