I like this contest. BRACKET 'A' 1) The Velvet Underground 16) Fugazi 8) Montrose 9) Flaming Lips 5) The New York Dolls 12) The MC5 4) XTC 13) Big Star Tough one, but I've been an XTC freak from way back. Dukes of Stratosphear ruled. 6) Sonic Youth 11) 311 3) The Pretenders 14) Weezer 7) Abba 10) Three Dog Night Hate to vote against Three Dog Night, but it's freaking Abba. 2) Janes Addiction 15) Sigur Ros BRACKET 'C' 1) Yes 16) Love 8) Mott The Hoople 9) Built to Spill 5) The Buzzcocks 12) The Butthole Surfers Another tough one. 4) The 13th Floor Elevators 13) Death Cab For Cutie 6) Sly and the Family Stone 11) The Talking Heads This was a totally unjust matchup. Those two bands could have been in my finals. 3) Devo 14) Pavement Then again, I'd be happy for Devo to take the big prize. 7) The Temptations 10) Bauhaus 2) King Crimson 15) The Dead Kennedys
but of course! ive got the chips from the chocolate fireball cd that has all their stuff on it. there's some really good songs on there. its interesting that andy partridge and colin moulding(spell?) switched roles in terms of songwriting with dukes. about 75% of it was colin as opposed to his usual 25% or so on regular xtc releases. colin's songs are usually my favorite ones on xtc's albums. similar to how lee ranaldo from sonic youth only gets in 2 or 3 songs per album, but they are usually my favorite ones as well.
BRACKET 'A' 1) The Velvet Underground -w 16) Fugazi Fugazi in over their heads here, but should be seeded higher. 8) Montrose 9) Flaming Lips -w Blowout. 5) The New York Dolls- w 12) The MC5 Close match-up, but the Dolls were slightly more influential and don't date as badly. 4) XTC 13) Big Star -w Painful match-up for me...love both, but Big Star was a perfect group. 6) Sonic Youth-w 11) 311 Still going strong, sill innovative. 3) The Pretenders-w 14) Weezer Man, another tough choice. I pick the Pretenders because Chrissie has one of the best voices ever. I can't think of anything that Weezer does that is head and shoulders better than anybody else, unless you count of all this crappy emo they influenced. 7) Abba -w 10) Three Dog Night The Swedish supergroup! 2) Janes Addiction -w 15) Sigur Ros Jane's Addiction were pretty awesome, although I bet Sigur Ros are ranked way too low. BRACKET 'C' 1) Yes 16) Love- w 8) Mott The Hoople 9) Built to Spill -w 5) The Buzzcocks- w 12) The Butthole Surfers 4) The 13th Floor Elevators- w 13) Death Cab For Cutie 6) Sly and the Family Stone 11) The Talking Heads -w This is a BS match-up...I would pick either to win the whole tournamet....there is no way the ' Heads are below Mott the Freaking Hoople and Built to Spill...give me a break! Sly Stone ruled, too. 3) Devo -w 14) Pavement 7) The Temptations -w 10) Bauhaus 2) King Crimson 15) The Dead Kennedys -w
Watch out, bro. You are dissing one of my all time faves in Mott the hoople . Actually, based on your overall picks I can tell you know from what you speak of, but the seedings were rather random and I think if you look at the big picture they worked out in a mostly fair manner. Thanks for voting.
Ya, I have to agree that Sigur Ros is seeded too low but I doubt many know of them, so it doesn't really matter. As for the Temptations.... They were R&B at best and in actuality Motown and Oldies. They have much business being in an "alternative" tournament as the Four Tops or Danny and the Juniors or even Bill Haley and his Comets! But I guess the real reason why I am slagging on them is that for the casual music fan, they aren't going to recognize many of the bands in this thing but they will recognize the Temptations. Isn't that technically the definition of "alternative" - something that the mass public doesn't like or appreciate or know about? And like someone else said they don't even play their own instruments! So I refuse to vote for them in any matchup on a matter of principle (even if they go up against the Pretenders who I really really despise for some reason). But just having some fun with you Win - you are doing a good job with this, thanks for doing it.
I can’t believe i’m voting in a ‘best of rock’ tourney that includes Mott The Hoople and Three dog night.
BRACKET 'A' 1) The Velvet Underground 16) 8) 9) Flaming Lips 5) The New York Dolls 12) 4) 13) Big Star 6) Sonic Youth 11) 3) The Pretenders 14) 7) Abba 10) 2) Janes Addiction 15) BRACKET 'C' 1) 16) Love 8) Mott The Hoople 9) 5) The Buzzcocks 12) 4) The 13th Floor Elevators 13) 6) 11) The Talking Heads 3) Devo 14) 7) The Temptations 10) 2) King Crimson 15)
Manny, I enjoy (even encourage) the digs when they are meant in a teasing manner. It's A-holes (thankfuly few) who have no clue and continually b**** about a certain band not being included (when I only stated about a hundred times that bands from the previous tourney were ineligable) that make one wonder why put forth this effort? I do want to say once again however that by 'alternative', I meant an alternative to the types of bands that were allowed in the first tourney. I could have easily done an ALL 'Alternative rock' competition, but felt that would not be as entertaining; and based on feedback and current results it would appear there is a great appreciation that bands like the Temptations and Abba (and even Yes ) were included. Overall, I'm VERY pleased with the voter turnout and most impoprtantly, am seeing what I suspect is a more rounded representation of the members here who care and most often post in the music threads. I was absolutely dismayed to see the first tourney turn into Classic Rock central. Probably half those voters haven't bought more than one cd in the past year and could not find Amazon if I were there to personaly push the keys for them. This tourney is for those who dig deep for musical gems and won't be lead around by the nose by corprate classic rock stations. As for your concern that those I just railed against will give the Temptations a leg up, I highly doubt it. Bands like Janes Addiction will sadly crush them in to dist. Indeed, I truly hope this is being enjoyed by those who count most in my book. Those guys who try to turn us all on to their new discoveries and/or their otherwise overlooked favorites. All that said, there are some very close races right now, so I hope those with a clue will continue to vote. Hey, just wait, the 2nd half of round one will be even more diverse than the first half. I can't wait to see what happens when Television goes up against The Carpenters.
One of my all-time favorite concerts was Peter Gabriel touring to support his first solo album with Television as the back up band at the Music Hall (an excellent venue for that show) Man, it was SO good, and I feel lucky to this day to have been there.

The Butthole Surfers losing is the only one I find suprising. I Love the Buzzcocks and all but come on, this is Texas and TBS rule.
The Pretenders over Weezer surprises me I was hopin Sigur Ros could pull a miraculous upset... eh oh well
Missed the election, had I not, I would have created a tie by voting for the Butthole Surfers, oh well...
