I think a lot of people on this board have never managed people, otherwise their opinions would be a lot different. At least in my experience, managing egos etc makes you be a lot more patient and realize that sometimes it is frustration, competitiveness, desire, whatever...that makes them throw a tantrum. You use it to teach them, and move on...... DD
DD I would agree with you if this was the first team Von has been on but he has been on at least 3-4 teams before the Rockets and have been waived/cut by all of them including the team that drafted him. You may say he was still young and immature but if getting cut/waived by even 1 team doesnt wake you up and if it doesnt wake you up after 3-4 times then clearly it is a pattern of not learning. Had Von been mature he would be an excellent backup to Kobe out in LA. and those guys you compared all had great success in college and had enormous talent coming into the NBA and all of them are HOF (except Melo who very well could be when he is done) no way you can try to compare them to Von. Its like when you are looking at an employee right? Let say he went to a great college but then you look at his employment history and see that he has been fired by 3-4 of his previous employers. That alone raises a red flag...You take a chance you hire him and he does well, not perfect but he does well and you give him credit for that. But there are things that he does that hurt the company like challenge authority. then at the end of the year he comes to you and asks for a raise, a significant one and you see that there are new applicants fresh out of school you could hire than could easily do his job without the extra drama and a far lower price AND you can mold and train them to fit your company needs since it would have been their first job what would you do? I would hire the new college grad myself.
Agreed, and I doubt that Adelman would seriously hold this against him. He has successfully coached some of the worst.
Managing people and managing athletes are two different things. Managing athletes is more like baby sitting a bunch of spoiled, rich kids.
To me, Wilcox is ok. Just wonder if/when that switch will actually turn on. If it does, he would be great and we will call the Rockets geniuses for signing him. If it stays where it's at, then we will call anything more than a minimum contract a waste. People will call him a bust, Cato, Mo Taylor Jr... He wouldn't be a bust when that's the player he was when you signed him. Just seems like he doesn't get it and might never get it.
1) It's a rumor 2) This thread is not about Chris Wilcox 3) If you want to start another thread about it, go ahead.
If it's official, the thread title will reflect it or a new thread about the deal will be started. As for now, it's just a rumor.
I would say Von has above average athleticism, but to each his own. You know who else has elite athleticism though? Stromile Swift. Or how about JR Rider? Now that guy really had some hops. And how about that Stephon Marbury, he sure has some elite quickness. And on the topic of athleticism, how can one not mention the fables of AO, Spyda, and Air Up There. I mean the guy did do a 720 dunk! I think that qualifies him as elite since I haven't seen anyone in the NBA do it. Athleticism is important in the NBA. A complete void of athleticism probably means you are not very good. An above average athlete has an advantage to a degree. However it is far from the be all end all. The current best player in the NBA can attest. Yup, reigning champ Kobe Bryant has had average athleticism for awhile now. Jumping over cars notwithstanding.
agree completely. add to that that we didn't see what Von was like behind the scenes. its possible that he was much worse than we realize from a public perspective.
I see him as another Dampier like player. He is big and physical, a great rebounder, but lacks an offensive game. He would add some size, which is great.
All I know is he was one of the few guys that made me jump out of my Barcolounger when he made one of his explosive dunks, I'll miss him for that. White and Taylor better use those 40" verticals to do the same and make their jumpers.
LOL oh boy it was only a matter of time before this gem was unleashed on us once again. DaDakota thought process, 1.) Make argument 2.) Blindly defend argument 3.) Bring up poor examples 4.) Reiterate point by expanding on poor examples 5.) Desperation time, call people out for not having a CEO mentality. VOILA!
Maybe Adelman doesn't hold it against, but maybe Morey does? Or maybe Alexander does? Or maybe they all three do? Or, just maybe, this has to do with other factors entirely. It doesn't matter now I would think.
If Wafer's truly gone, then I wish him all the best. He gave us a lot of energy off the bench and played well overall. His scoring really lessened the blow of Tmac's absense. Sure, he had some warts in his game, but so do a lot of other good players on our roster. Nobody's perfect. My only regret is that we're losing an him for nothing. It'd be nice to get some return. But for the price we got him at I'm glad we just got some exciting basketball out of it.
Well the twitter account said he had a deal on the table from the rockets. If people are going to take this Von rumor as truth, then I guess the Wilcox rumor has legs too.
Scola is a leader. The Rockets went 2-2 with Scola and Battier leading the way and took the Lakers to 7 games. In the games without Yao Artest averaged about 9 points shooting 15% behind the arc and under 30% overall. When we needed him to be the go to guy he choked. Also in those 3 victories your beloved Wafer averaged 3 points and no rebounds and no assists. Granted that was in about 6 minutes a game but the point he was a non factor in those wins. Now in the losses he faired better but we were blown out in those games and he obviously didn't contribute in our wins. He has made some contributions along with some fancy dunks but on the whole he doesn't make us better just flashier. We have substituted Artest with Ariza which I think is a tougher team all around. We have 3 players in Budinger Taylor and White that already bring a better rounded game than Wafer ever had. Yeah they are not the instant offense but they are not the matador defense either. Plus none are blackholes. We have a more verstile backup center squad in Anderson Hayes and Dorsey. I expect Tmac to be back before the all star break and Yao may surprise and comeback sooner and we will have a better team than last year. Barring Injury I see a playoff bound team that no one will want to face in the first round.
I guess even bullet-pointing it was too difficult to understand. lol. This thread is about Von Wafer and a potential deal involving him, not about the twitter page or Chris Wilcox. If you think the deal on that page involving Chris Wilcox is worth a thread, then start one. But it has nothing to do with Von Wafer. I guess we're just trying to stay on-topic? I don't know how else to put that. Somebody help me.
