But doesn't the whole situation seem odd to you DD? I'd love Von on this team but this is ridiculous. There is something else going on. He's either not in NBA shape or this injury is worse than we thought. It's like waiting with the hopes and dreams Wafer can save us from this .500 hell hole.
Memphis wouldn't have taken a look at him for a second time if he wasn't healthy. So, Morey is probably looking at our trade options with T-Mac and if he doesn't get a SG then we should sign Von.
Trevor and Shane are the starters, they will get their minutes. Not enough to go around for 4 swingmen to get significant playing time. Somebody will get shafted.
If Morey jumped at a chance to sign him after Mem. passed the first time Von should be on this team by Friday. If not? who the hell knows what's going on.
Eh, Von has some pretty serious back issues - lot more than a strain. Disc problems (first reported last postseason) don't go away easily, and there's a reason two teams were scared off by his physical results. I really like Von too, but let's not downplay this.
According to his twitter, the docs said he was ok, and would not need surgery and would be back in 1-3 weeks. Not sure about disc problems, where did you hear that? DD
He may not need surgery, but it's definitely a structural issue that carries some risk going forward. The disc problems first surfaced last postseason, it's why he was expected to miss Game 6 against Portland (but somehow played, and relatively well - all credit to him). http://blog.oregonlive.com/blazers/2009/04/von_wafer_doubtful_for_game_6.html
I remember reading about it somewhere last season and mentioning it a couple of times. I believed it was a big deal (thoughts of "not another bad back!" going through my head, after the T-Mac drama), but no one else seemed too worried, so I started thinking I might have misunderstood. It was a big reason why I didn't want to sign him to a long contract and/or one for mucho dinero. The way he was playing, it didn't look like an issue, his main issue with me being "upstairs," if you know what I mean. Having had disc surgery myself and on-going problems with chronic pain, I'm kind of tuned into the problems that can be associated with that. I like Von, although I've given him hell from time to time. Signed for cheap dollars and a short contract, he's well worth having on the bench as instant offense, which is his forté. I've never taken seriously the notion that he could ever be a starter for this team, or anyone else, except in D-League. With a limited role and small bucks, drama in his back pocket, I'd love to have him on the bench. Not with recurring back issues. That could and apparently is his achilles heel.
I was watching a Houston high school basketball game the other night and all the kids on one team had Von-hawks. (I think it was Worthing) Guy had an impact on H-town pop culture. Say what you want about Von, at the very least he was an offensive spark plug and very entertaining and exciting to watch.
Yeah, nothing from the Rockets side, but he has no info from the Von side of the equation, as in, ...has Von's back gotten better etc. DD
I've been following his twitter closely... he's been to the gym very recently after not being able to. I think he's either recovered or near recovered from these suspected back issues.
