If they cost the same yeah, but like Ron and Von, there's a 3 times difference in price between Von and Jermaine. I don't watch college ball so I don't know how good Taylor is, but given where he was drafted (very early 2nd round) by the same GM and the length of time spent in college, I'm hoping he has the type of impact Landry had his rookie season.
As much as I wanted Ron to be here, it was the best move to make. The Rockets have a lot of young talent and it's time to rebuild. I think Von has a lot of upside and he's only going to get better. Does he play lockdown defense? No, but it doesn't mean he can't learn how to play team defense. DD, What do you think of this line-up: PG - AB SG - Von SF- Battier PF Scola or Landry C - Scola or whoever we pick up. I would love to see Landry get starters minutes but there's a good chance he'll be lost for like 5 to 7 minutes a game. That's the only knock on Landry. He kinda gets out of his game. Morey has stressed this before.
Ron has a good post up game to go along with his (streaky) outside game and toughness. And even tho Ron has less verticality than Von, Ron finishes better at the rim because of his strength and soft touch near the basket. I love Von's jumper but every other facet of his game is less than desired, imho. Having said that, i wouldn't take either. Both are headcases and make boneheaded decisions are crucial points. I would rather see the Rockets develop, Taylor, Budinger, and White at the Swing position. We can also use the added cap space to go after Lebron next year (I can fantasize )!
I go with Ron, he's not perfect but he plays both sides of the ball better than most in the league. Von is aggressive attacking the bucket, but dumber than a box of hammers. Its hard for me to use the word effecient when describing Von because of his ulta low BB-IQ.
Ron is a leader and a passionate player. Vohawk is more determined to make it in the NBA and cash it wherever he goes. Vohawk reminds me a lot of Vernon Maxwell.
This thread is obsolete, since Von isn't coming back as of right now, and apparently Ron isn't either, but please elaborate what metric you used to judge efficiency - (granted, I know the answer, it's the DD Favorit-o-meter, which is capable of stitching together multiple mutually inconsistent hypothesis under one roof - I just want to hear your manufactured explanation here).
why will von only get better? just because? his ceiling doesn't seem to be very high due to his basketball iq, his marginal defense, his handles, and his court vision. further, the guy is a hot head who couldn't control himself during a major playoff game. do you really want players that have shown a complete inability to control their own behavior? i know you dismiss it as "he cares" since you love to cherrypick but he wouldn't listen to his coach...a players coach. i'm pretty sure if ron had acted in the same fashion then you would be using it as an argument against him.
How stupid is this? Why would you sign Von Wafer instead of Ron Artest. Ron is the main focal point of this team when yao went down. He kept us in the playoffs and he help us pass the first round. He is a great defender and he can score. He hustles and he intimidates other players. ROn is a one of a kind player that can affect both ends of the floor. Von Wafer on the other hand have a decent shot and is fairly atheletic. But this guy has a horrible I.Q. If you think Ron Artest make bad decisions, Von is just as bad. What you're seeing from his production is probabaly the most and the best you will ever see. Im sorry to say but Von Wafer will just be a decent role player his whole entire career. I just don't see him get any much better from where he is now.
I think the Rockets should let Ron walk and keep Von....sure Ron is better, but as a Starter Von was more efficient. Look it up...... I think he is going to be good as he grows and matures and learns to play more in control. Ron still hasn't learned that.... DD
Does anybody know what DaDakota thinks about this issue? If he repeats it 325 more times I might finally remember it.
How many teams has Von played for since 2005? I wonder how many have tried to get Von to play under control? Maybe they just didn't think of it.
I don't think it is as simple as who should we keep, but more so how much will it cost to keep each of them? Assuming Artest even still has any interest in the Rockets then he will cost more, which doesn't make much sense for us unless we trade Tmac to get an all star player that could keep us in contention. I don't like the idea of Ron as the best player on a potential lottery team considering his age and what he is likely to ask for money wise. If Von Wafer is willing to sign for what Morey considers a reasonable price then there is no reason not to resign him. That being said I suspect he wants more than Morey is willing to offer and you don't over pay him or you make the same mistake the rockets made back with the Moochie Norris resigning. So in all likely hood we will end up with neither of them.
If Von were asking for a Chuck Hayes type of contract, for 3 years with the third a team option (in this case. don't remember the option on Chuck's deal), and if using that portion of the MLE didn't queer the pitch with getting a center like Gortat (for example), then sure, sign Von. With Yao out, Artest is sure to sign elsewhere, IMO, so I don't think it's an "either/or" thing, DD. Having said that, my personal opinion is that the Rocks aren't planning to ask Von to return. Not if he's expecting Scola or Landry money. And I don't think he is worth that kind of money. Too bad, because he was fun to watch.
