Wafer has been lighting it up in the past couple of games hitting 5 threes and getting to the basket very well. He is showing why he should get this job and the Celtics don't need Lasme anyways because they got Baby, KG, and Harangody.
Boston's last preseason game is tonight against the Nets. It now appears Wafer has taken the lead in the race for the final roster spot. From Steve Bulpett in the Boston Herald: http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/basketball/celtics/view.bg?articleid=1290124&format=text "As it stands, Von Wafer appears to be in the lead for the Celtics’ last roster spot. Rivers said the team will probably make a cut after tonight’s preseason finale against New Jersey. “(Wafer’s) been more aggressive offensively,” Rivers said. “He still has to buy in defensively and into our culture, and I think he’ll do that. He’s getting better.” With West out the first 10 games of the season on suspension - and having continued back problems - Wafer may be needed. . . ." And from Scott Souza in the MetroWest Daily: http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/s...es/x1742450369/Wafer-on-thin-ice-with-Celtics "The Celtics were hoping Wafer, who averaged 9.7 points per game and hit 64 3-pointers with the Rockets two years ago, would be the shooter off the bench Ainge talked about acquiring all summer. Ray Allen is hoping he can still be that guy. "In the second unit he's picked up more of the scoring burden," Allen said. "We haven't had that scoring punch (off the bench). You have had me and Paul (Pierce), and when he goes to the bench Doc's usually got to keep one of us out there. So (Wafer's presence) is why I believe this team is definitely deeper than years past." Me: Wafer played well against the starters in last night's open scrimmage. Just the fact that he was playing at all with the second unit says a lot. With West out, they need him. In another wrinkle, the Celtics have brought in Tiny Gallon, recently cut by the Bucks, for a look-see. It's doubtful Gallon will make the team, but apparently Danny Ainge has had his eye on the big kid and he could end up on their Maine D-League affiliate and hopefully work his way into NBA condition.
I'm pretty sure Wafer secured his roster spot tonight. He was the only one of the people battling for the 15th spot to score and he played more minutes
Von pretty much solidified his spot on the team tonight by hitting 2 threes and making an impressive move to the basket for the layup in the 4th quarter. As for Lasme, zero's across the stat sheet. I can't wait for the Boston vs. Houston game to see Von make his return to the TC.
Straight from the Boston Globe's NBA writer. "#Celtics have waived Stephane Lasme, opening door for Von Wafer to make team. After tough start, Wafer made late run with 3-point shooting" http://twitter.com/#!/gwashburn14 Congrats Von, go get 'em.
i bet celtics management remebered this vid and said "wow hes available. we can use him". if his contract is guranteed, then celtics vs rockets game will be interesting as hell. i would have loved to watch Jarmaine Taylor guardVon Wafer during the regular season but I guess Jermaine Taylor will just have to stick with more training in the Danger Room.
*I can't edit post on this site for some reason. Is that the same for everyone?* Lasme made a helluva run for that last spot. Everyone was pulling for him. Wafer earned the job because he could shoot. Lasme couldn't, but he could do everything else.
Wafer will definitely be in the rotation for at least some, if not all of the first 10 games. Due to various injuries (Perkins, Jermaine O'Neal) the Celtics will start Shaq, Garnett, Pierce, Allen, and Rondo. The second unit would normally be led by Delonte West and should function as a complete alternate group for most of the year. With West suspended and Avery Bradley hurt, the second five is: Jermaine (if healthy) or Semih Erden, Big Baby, Daniels, Nate Robinson, and... Wafer. They also have Harangody filling in where needed. It's a strong group 1-15, probably with every one being a bona fide player. Wafer's play in the first 10 games will determine his season. If he can't produce he might not get another chance.
Practice flare-up between Delonte and Wafer in 2-on-2 game. Ends with Delonte screaming "Do something about it!" as he scores twice on Wafer @vonwafer13: Forsberg in that article u made it sound like dwest was jus killing me no sir we was goin at it stat the facts sir thank u http://twitter.com/#!/ESPNForsberg Spoiler <object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vlGiIlk8fuE&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vlGiIlk8fuE&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></object> http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/celtics/post/_/id/4677440/practice-notes-temper-trap
I'm pretty sure Lowry and Brooks have spats like that as well. Maybe Lee and Martin too. It's good for competitive wise. As long as it doesn't turn violent, I'm all for a lil back and forth.
West is way better. He can do plenty on both ends of the floor. The Celtic's second unit is far more effective when West plays. He was very good for the Cavs last season. Wafer is the Boston's 15th best player. He's got talent, but overall is the last guy on the roster. The only reason he might be in the rotation now is because of West's suspension and Bradley's injury.
