40% is too high of a mark. The best shooter on your team should be around that, but not every shooter on the team. I think anything over 36% from the 3pt line is legit.

40% is the mendoza line for the NBA. having 2 of our big 3 shooting under it is 2 too many. this isn't suprising, as our offense always putt putts whenever t-mac and artest are playing....which is why the lineup of:

    Wafer
    Barry
    Landry
    Yao

is our most fluid and efficient lineup.

the problem we we used to play GREAT defense with TERRIBLE offense. now our offense is decent, but our defense is TERRIBLE.

championship teams don't just have "decent" defense DD. you know better than that. we're supposed to be a shut down defensive team with the addition of artest.

not if you give them tracy AND artest. if they're gona build around shaq and play half-court, nash and amare just aren't going to work.

The rockets would have to pay phoenix child support, because that kind of fuc*ing would result in pregnancy

obviously defense. the celtics proved it. they scored 75-85 pts numerous times in the playoffs last yr and yet still advanced. why? they played some of the best defense we've seen.

we have the players, and yet we resort to playing FREAKIN' ZONE at times. seriously? we're last in the league in blocks.

seriously, who fears our team defensively? everybody wants to go to the rack and posterize us

I've always been a defense wins games. If you have defense the offense will come type.

But he made this thread sounding like offense sucks when in fact I dont see it like that. In fact if anything our offense might be a bit stronger then last year.

Battier has just decline to who knows where. Rafers defense is almost as streaky as his shooting. Hayes is even slowed down. Scolandry, Brooks and Wafer have always been a offense rhythm player. Yao is Yao. While his presence deters incoming players we do need more. Artest is our current best perimeter defender, over rated or not. But he is our current best one. So basically we picked up more offensive talent and when Artest came over here, he came here as a third option (offense over defense).

    Shooting numbers:
As a team, overall: 45% is a decent benchmark, Over 47% is great. At or below 43% is bad.

Center: Generally taking most of their shots inside of 5 feet. 49% is good, 43% or below is bad, above 53% is great

PF: Face up offense as far out as 18 feet, but should pad numbers like centers with putbacks. 47% is good, 43% or under is bad, above 50% is great

SF: small forwards are a real mixed bag, since you get a lot of non-offensive glue guys at this position. I'll just say, anything above 43% is house money.

SG: on a prototypical team, they're the most diversified and capable scorers from anywhere on the court. 45% overall is good, 40% or below is bad, 48% or higher is amazing

PG: I'm a PG purist that feels PGs should be snipers. 47% good, 40% or below bad, over 50% great.

3 pointers: 35% is what I consider to be the benchmark. Hitting 33% is as efficient as hitting 50% from 2, though missed 3s are high risks for a fastbreak going the other way. Guys shouldn't take more than 2 attempts a game unless they consistently hit 40% or higher. Way too many guys have a hot night and feel they can let loose at will every game after.

if you follow the rockets throughout the years, you know offense is not the reason we're struggling now. let's take a look at the stats.

    let's take a look:
    08-09
    ppg - 98; fg% - 44.4%; 3pt% - 36.8%
    oppg - 95.3; ofg% - 45.2%; o3pt% - 33.8%

    07-08
    ppg - 96.7; fg% - 44.8; 3pt% - 34.2%
    oppg - 92.0; fg% - 43.3%

    now let's look under JVG
    04-05 91ppg on 42.3% shooting for opponents
    05-06 91.7ppg on 42.9%
    06-07 92.1ppg on 42.9%

and this year we're giving up 45.2% shooting and people are saying we're not bad on defense??? JVG's teams consistently is top 3 in fg% allowed. and that's despite us not really that fast of a pace either.

our offense will get better with time b/c players haven't played together with this lineup for over a month yet.

but defense should be a CONSTANT.
