Yup. Photo ops are a big deal for them. They want to be seen as a legitimate state to their peers so they can spread it to their subjects. "Look my people! We are big time!"
You keep on ignoring my point. Who are the main to players at play in ending the Korean War? North Korea and South Korea. These are the two states that have the agency to end the war. It's that simple . When Park was President of South Korea, she was known for her harsh hawkish attidue towards North Korea. There was zero chance of talks between N and S Korea with her as President. Absolutely none. Now you are telling me that it is Trump, not the new South Korean President Moon who has always been outspoken about unification and desring to talk to Kim who suddenly is placed as President of the South Korea and has the power to suddenly do action to his rhetoric he has been staring staring for years for these talks? So it's just a major coincidence to you that the talks just happen to align with a major regime chance from regime that didn't want to talk to a regime that wanted to?
the sunshine policy is just the strategery of the left. why didn't it work all the years previous when the left ran the government? I didn't ignore any of your point, they don't even reconcile with each other.
I mean for god sakes Moon's campaign promise was that his first foreign state visit would be with Kim. He literally had that as a ****ing campaign promise. And look, he met with Kim... Therefore Trump? Ya, but no.
A photo op? South Korea was the biggest problem? You are making ridiculousj statements to not give Trump credit. Don't let your dislike of him do that to you
Oh so you believe Trump's tweet that unification has occured and the Korean War is officially over because of a meeting. Meetings have happened before. Photo ops have happened before. Anything that proceeds beyond that is not because Trump is some diplomatic genius. Deep down you know this is true. If anything goes beyond these talks like actual denculearizarion or actual unification I would attribute that to the mind set and temperment of Un and Moon relative to their predessors along with the healing effects of time .
South Korea wants more than a photo op. They want denuclearizarion of a nation that has explicitly threatened to use them on their nation.
I didn't say we ignore it. I think we should be just as skeptical as every other agreement NK has ever made that they broke in time. What's different now besides Trump's fanatics trying to hail this as a Nobel Prize winning moment? I mean, please.
For Moon, the mere ceasing of testing of nuclear weapons is enough for talks. For many other South Koreans, complete denuxldenucleariis required before talks. Just like any other nation there is disagrememdi amongst the constituency. Moon is President therefore it's his call and he decided just the mere ceasing of tests is enough for talks.
Clearly this is what I meant when I said there has been no paradigm shift and I have no faith in DPRK evil leaders. What are you smoking? UN general assembly. SOTU, Oval Office, state visits, which previous administrations had meetings and photo ops with all the families of the kidnapping victims of the DPRK? Obviously, you won't even listen to people who escaped the place giving credit where it is due.
This statement from you implies that you think these talks mean something different happened beyond what other meetings prior resulted in.
Obviously something different happened, I don't think it is a major shift. You credit the sunshine policy, which has been tried several times for several years. The something different that happened is actual pressure from the USA and Japan on China.
I'm not optimistic that this will lead to a true peace. The North Korean leadership, including the guy that pulls the strings today, has broken every agreement they've ever made in the past. I think Kim Jong-un is working to see what he can get from the US and South Korea in the way of largess and concessions that will weaken SK, and weaken the USA in the region. Whatever he does manage to get will ultimately have no lasting effect on Kim's behavior, which is North Korea's behavior, of course. I'm very worried about trump doing something incredibly stupid, and the possibilities are damn near limitless. I would love to be wrong, but I'm not expecting to be, not by the time the dust settles.
I think Mr.Trump deserve some credits , not for his negotiations skills or strategies, it worked based on his reputation, if (insert a rational member name) was threatening you with a gun in his hands, you won't be so intemidated , but if Bobby was doing that .... everyone would run for his life including bigtex
i think Park, the SK President and the only adult there (among leaders of NK, SK and USA), deserves most of the credit.
There have been two previous summit between them that took place in NK. This is the first one that took place in SK. And that is largely due to the current SK government . Nothing has worked yet.
