Her mom mails her a check from SA and the bank won't deposit it...Charlize has a "meltdown" (her words) in the lobby and a talent agent happens to be there, watching it, and hands her his card...rest is history. 2 Days in the Valley was her first movie role in the US. Not a great movie, but holy crikies does she look good in it.
