Didn't Hodges Mitchell do just as well as Cedric Benson? He never had as much potential... but at their respective stages, they were probably pretty much the same.
The question is: does Young compete for a position on the team? I say absolutely. The starter has lit up sorry D-1 defenses but implodes on the road (or neutral sites) against ranked competition - which is why I brought up past statistics. It has happened over and over for whatever reason. So when (or if) it happens again, what does Mack Brown do? Does he leave Simms in the game or bring someone off the bench? If Greg Davis can teach Young to "drive the car", he should be the number 2. And hopefully we'll see the shotgun formation again.
it will be most interesting to see. part of me thinks: man, mack brown will be loyal to chris simms. . . after all, that's his golden boy. another part of me thinks: there's a precedent for mack to say "screw loyalty" when it comes to his starting quarterback, and if vincent young is as good as he's supposed to be, well. . . if I was a betting man, though, I would bet that young will redshirt and that simms will have a senior season that will exonerate him for all the troubles of the past. I'm a sucker for a happy ending. then, young will lead UT to 3 consecutive national titles while winning 3 consecutive heismans [oh, and discovering the cure for cancer, to boot!].
Is Young's daddy famous? Maybe that will be the determining factor in whether or not he gets playing time. Well, wait...what made Chris Simms want to come to UT? It couldn't have been Chris Simms... So Mack was good enough to reel in Simms, but not Benson and Young? What would Simms, a guy that plays Young's position, being at UT have to do with Young wanting to come? If you mean that Young watched the Big 12 Championship game, saw Simms blow the game, and decided he could start at UT next year, then yeah, I might buy that. I think being in the Rose Bowl would have helped the cause more than having a "celebrity" on the team.
I'd settle for 3 National Championships. Being in Austin and listening to everyone bang on the Simms/Applewhite situation for the entire season has done nothing but give most people migranes. Getting Vincent Young and the rest of our Freshman studs has been a breath of fresh air in UT Footballdom. Now...get ready for the next controversy over the next few years....players transferring out of UT because of lack of playing time/opportunity...
We are fortunate to have Chris Simms to be our starting QB going into fall practice. I hope the guy works ultra hard with his father on how to read defenses better and not telegraph his throws, if he does these things a little better we will be fine next year with him leading hte team. He should be motivated to personally address these weaknesses after his terrible last outing, I hope he has it in him. VY should get a chance next year. If he if by mid-september is running the team better than everyone but Simms he should not be redshirted. I think expecting him to beat out Chris Simm's in his last year is just as unrealistic as many of expectations placed on Simms, but you never know. If VY is as good as advertised, he will not play college ball 4 years and reshirting just loses his services (even if raw) for a year. VY is a hell of an athlete beyond being a QB right? In college being able to run can really screw over a defensive scheme designed to limit the passing game. I personally think unless one QB is light years ahead a platooning situation in college is fine. It would have really helped us last year to have Major take some drives in big games--to give the defense a change up and allow Chris to see what the defense is doing. If VY is a hell of a running threat, that is just one more reason to be able to put the change up out there.
