I look at these threads more to see how far behind I am to the advanced game players, experts, snobs, etc. Brings back memories of how people thought. The That-Was-All-We-Needed theme "Yyyeaaah that DOES look like Popeye!" "I like Gorf better than Galaxian - the lazer sounds cooler" "This controller has TWO buttons?"
My top 10 (no particular order) 1. Ocarina of Time (N64) 2. Shadow Man (N64) ( I have to post a video for this incredible game, I think I was probably the only person to play it) <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vHdnVut8yQ4&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vHdnVut8yQ4&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> 3. Metal Gear Solid 4 4. Metal Gear Solid 3 5. Metal Gear Solid 6. God of War 7. Twilight Princess 8. Goldeneye 9. Gears of War 10. GTA IV
I'm gonna cause some stir with this, but... boy, I sure didn't like Ocarina of Time, or really any 3D Zelda game. I could never get into them; they bored me. As far as I'm concerned, A Link to the Past still stands as the best Zelda ever made. I didn't care for Xenogears either. In no particular order: Final Fantasy 6, 7, and 12 (I liked the other ones, but these stand above the rest. And 8 was kinda lame.) Metal Gear Solid 1, 3 and 4 Resident Evil 4 Tekken 5 DR Street Fighter II HD Remix Gran Turismo 3 (still can't believe I got 100% in this game) Super Mario Brothers 3 StarFox (where's the love for this one?) Xenosaga 1 and 3 God of War GTA Vice City Edit: Forgot Chrono Trigger Honorable Mentions: Katamari Damacy, Parasite Eve, Ace Combat 4, Soul Calibur 2, Gears of War
You know, it's surprising how many Goldeneye fans missed this. I'm going to pimp it now. I think every gaming fan should give this one a try. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YSntWgfjq54&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YSntWgfjq54&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Baldur's Gate 2 Fallout 2 Fallout 3 Oblivion Jade Empire Star Wars: KOTR Bioshock Mass Effect Wii Bowling Wii Tennis These are in no particular order
I was scanning the thread and I'm glad someone finally said why Starcraft is (was, really, it's so dated now... originally released March, 1998!) so good. What I consider perfect balance between the 3 races, leading to amazing gameplay. Didn't start out that way, but they got there. Still eagerly awaiting Starcraft II, which might be out in June? And someone earlier said it was an RPG. It's an RTS, with a great storyline.
Legend of Zelda (NES) - first game I dreamed about when I was a kid, and when I wasn't playing it I was thinking about it, so I guess that's gotta be way up there. Super Mario Bros 3 (NES) Doom (PC) - 4 player deathmatch on a local BBS via dialup was awesome Civilization (PC) Ultima VII (PC) - great graphics and music, huge world with weather and thousands of interactive items Baldur's Gate series (PC) - incredible RPG saga Planescape: Torment (PC) - best writing in a game Chrono Trigger (SNES) - best console RPG Suikoden 2 (PS1) - tied for best console RPG Street Fighter 2 (arcade/SNES) Tetris (any) Daytona USA (arcade) Smash TV (arcade/SNES) - spiritual successor to Robotron, one of the earliest and best 2 stick shooters
Sorry, but I have to whole-heartedly disagree with that. By what criteria does it not stand up? It is essentially the same game engine. If you're talking about improved graphics or more levels and powerups, then SMB3 doesn't belong either because Super Mario World completely outclasses it by those very same standards. Super Mario Bros. is a classic... you're talking about it like it's in the same breath as something like Altered Beast. If anything, SMB3 is the game that doesn't hold up. The weaknesses of the ancient NES hardware really show and the lack of a save feature for such a huge game is inexcusable... but I digress... My only real contribution to this thread would be Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island for SNES. Tight controls. Beautiful graphics and excellent soundtrack. Difficulty progresses adequately without ever resorting to cheapness. Loads of replay value... Would be perfect were it not for Baby Mario's wailing.
Quest for Glory Series Space Quest Series King's Quest Series Police Quest Series and Robin: Conquest for Longbow Pure nostalgia
Herzog Zwei - Sega Genesis - The father of all RTS Civilization I - no explanation needed. Also ran... NFL/NBA 2K - dreamcast
Metal Gear Solid (PS1) was an amazing achievement. I played that game over and over and over again. It did feel like a movie. You felt like you were really freezing your ass off and trying to break a stormtroopers neck without alerting the others. The sequel with the whiny blond kid was pretty annoying, despite the improved platform graphics.
