Best simulation racing game ever: Forza Motorsport 3 Also, some of the games so of you are naming as "best"...remember one of the rules at the beginning, "1. List nothing that's purely nostalgia-based greatness, or "for-its-time" greatness.". Therefore, how could you possibly choose a ghetto NES game over something that has come out within the last 5 years? Seriously, try going back and playing NES...I cant believe I actually enjoyed it back then. Graphics suck...you have 2 buttons to do everything, which obviously means you cant too much...depth, obviously, with blu ray and DVD, there is much more offered today, etc... Really, other than maybe "story", the titles back in the day were worthless compared to what we have today. Ex. Zelda was amazing back then...it completely changed gaming for me. However, compare that to the great titles today. Would you really choose to play the original Zelda over Fallout 3? You cant compare the two when it comes to presentation, graphics, sounds, replayability, etc... Btw, I tried to play Zelda a few weeks back...got bored after 3 min and shut it off. Again, keep in mind the rule I posted above. If that wasnt a rule, Zelda would surely be on the list of greatest of all time.
Your rant against older tech games are irrelevant if the games are still fun. And what is fun is very subjective. There aren't a ton of NES games I would put up there in that category nowadays, but SMB3 and Punch-out are still great games that I could see myself playing over some of the so-called greatest games of the past few gens.
I heard the new forza was off the hook. I need to pickup the following games before christmas. 1. NBA Live 10 2. Fifa 10 3. Forza 4. CODMW (reserved)
I gotta go with Mario Kart over Gran Turismo as well. I just can't get into SIM racers. Too much fine tuning this and that and too realistic. Give me a kart with some red shells and I'm good to go.
Yeah, I know...but seriously, I got an NES emulator and I thought Id go back and play some of the "greats" a few weeks back...its just so out dated that it really isnt fun at all. For instance...Punch Out on the Wii would have to be considered a great if Punch Out on NES is even in consideration. I just think that there have been so many improvements in areas such as design, graphics, sound, online play, etc...that it makes enjoying a primitive game very difficult, regardless of how awesome they used to be back in the day.
Yes, Forza is great. You should definitely get your hands on FIFA as well...both games are top notch.
Funny you mention that, cause I played zelda: oot this fall, after just beating Killzone 2, Uncharted, RE5, and Bioshock, and I still enjoyed the hell out of it. Not only that, but I still find myself playing some of the older NES titles like Tecmo bowl, Tetris, etc, every now and then as well, and I still find them very enjoyable. I guess to answer your question then, ya, I can and do play the older titles even with the great stuff out now. Greatness is greatness, no matter the time.
That's not a rule. And it shouldn't ever be. Once a generation passes, you get all new experiences - it doesn't mean the previous experiences disappear. Otherwise the SMB3 example he used also doesn't apply. Just because graphics get prettier 10 years from now doesn't mean that car chase scene i played in Uncharted 2 last night will no longer be 'great'.
Fair enough...but my initial point was more along the lines that calling an NES game a "great" is kind of off target given the games we have today and the rules that were established for this thread. I kind of veered off into the "NES games are boring". Well, Zelda: oot was with the N64...it had a lot more to work with than the The Legend of Zelda. And yes, I can still play that game and enjoy it. Tetris is great, youre right...but its also a game that doesnt require graphics, presentation, sound, etc...just like any other puzzle game, so you are correct bc its not limited by the console's abilities. I do think Tetris is one of the greatest within its genre. Techmo Bowl...fun as hell...still, give me 1 football game that I have to play for 2 months. Madden 10 > Techmo Bowl.
Its the rule that DrexlerFan established for the purposes of this thread and all I did was restate it.
That game is crazy with its dialogs (and monologues). The story is indeed very good and, although I didn't finish it, can vary a lot based on your character and the choices you make. But, when I feel like I not playing anymore because I have 20 minutes worth of text to read before I can continue, it makes me think they went a little bit overboard. But recommended either way.
How would you consider them worthless. I mean I can play Super Mario World and play Bioshock and consider them both great games. Yeah Mario World is outdated by graphics standards, but doesn't mean that it cant stack up with today's games.
I think you might have mistaken his intent. His example is Mario and Mario 3. You made it sound as though a classic SNES or NES game, for example, shouldn't be considered because of tech. If that was the case SMB3 wouldn't be considered either. I know DF is a longtime RPG fan; I would bet he considers some previous gen games among the best. I just don't see how previous gens should just be exempt from having some of the best games out there.
I should also mention MVP baseball 04 and 05 as possibly the best baseball games of all time. Its a shame they stopped making them
I wasnt exactly saying they should be exempt...but, based on the rules, The Legend of Zelda should not be considered. Punch Out on the NES should not be considered. Games like that.
I see what both you guys are saying, and it runs on a fine line. I think previous generations' games can definitely appear on top game lists, however I do agree with Drex that you have to examine certain games against their similar sequels. While the NES Legend of Zelda was one of the most groundbreaking and excellent games of its time, is there anyone who actually thinks it is better than A Link To The Past and Ocarina of Time? If the answer to that is "no", then it logically follows that the NES Zelda game shouldn't be on the best games list ahead of those other Zelda games, or even on the list at all depending on the criteria for that list. That's the difficult thing with these types of lists. There are so many great classic games that have been since overshadowed, but to not include them on a greatest games list almost seems like an affront to video game history. That's why there should be some specific criteria for these types of lists, and Drex tried to do that in his initial post. Interestingly enough, I can think of a handful of games where I prefer the predecessor version of the current generation version.
I never played that, but NFL 2k5 is far and away the best football game ever made. I wish they were still allowed to make NFL games. **** Madden
