...because they've rendered Gears of War for the PC essentially unplayable for me.

First, let me quote myself from this thread:
Well, that's quite wrong now. Now I hate them.

So let me explain my predicament, and how it was achievements that caused the problem.

So my old XP laptop's graphics card just died. So I moved all my crap over to a new Vista 64-bit desktop, including Gears of War.

So I play through act 1, then when I return to the game, my saves have mysteriously disappeared.

After some searching, I find that FOR THE SAKE OF THE FUNCTIONALITY AND SANCTITY OF ACHIEVEMENTS, you have to be signed in using a "Live" profile in order for your progress to save.

When I first bought the game this wasn't the case, apparently, but there had since been an update to the "Live" software.

No big deal, right? I'll just start over using a Live profile. So I sign up (side note, I don't understand why I can't link to my 360 profile), and the machine tells me I need to update to the just released LIVE 2.0 software.

Long story short, that software doesn't work properly with Vista 64-bit, apparently. Whenever I install it and try to start the game, it tells me it can't locate the directx 9 file, and in about 3 hours of trying I found no way to fix it. Tried downloading the dll manually, tried installing the latest DX redist, praying to god... nothing worked.

In summary, the only way I can play Gears of War on the PC is if I play the entire game in one sitting. WERE IT NOT FOR ACHIEVEMENTS, THIS PROBLEM WOULD NOT EXIST.

    #$%& Achievements, #$%& Vista, #$%& Microsoft.

Making it mandatory to track saved game progress over the net is the most r****ded idea EVER.

The PC version has content the 360 version doesn't, and looks better too if you got a good PC.

Then you should be a real man and finish it in one sitting. The locust laugh at your total lack of dedication.

You're really b****ing about nothing, because you don't have to be signed into Live for achievements on any other game. This is a Gears of War save game issue, nothing else.

    Uhhhhhh... say WHAT now?

    I paid $50 for a game I can't play, and I'm "b****ing about nothing?"

Meaningless "achievements" should NEVER, EVER PREVENT YOU FROM ACTUALLY PLAYING THE GAME. I don't care if it's an issue with 1 game or 100. That should never happen. Period. The end.

It's totally laughable that there are actually people defending this...

playing games with a keyboard is unethical, but so many war titles choose from. It's like a bush's wet dream. It just takes me forever to get through basic training when i'm using the "tab" key. =(

The achievements have nothing to do with Gears Of War's stupid online/save game requirements. Whining about it is silly.

If anything, Epic is just being anal about piracy. They used it as an excuse to not release GOW2 on the PC.

I sure as heck am wishing for XP back... I really liked that OS... maybe that's because I was in support for awhile and got to know it like the back of my hand.

And really, I'm not a "PC Gamer," lol. I have a grand total of like 4 games. Only broke them out recently because I figured may as well, it's the one good thing that came of my laptop video card dying on me... I have Gears for the 360 as well. But this way I can't play the extra content...

Whining about my game turning into a $50 (+tax) paperweight is not "silly."

And it's not even a good paperweight.

Maybe I'll try it out as a doorstopper.

Something funny about a MS product not working with Vista. lol

Anyhow, you have a right to be pissed, but these guys are correct in that it has **** all to do with Achievements.

This is more a combination of MS trying to integrate it's Windows Live system across everything and Epic using a dumb save/anti piracy system.

    Sucks, definitely.

EDIT: BTW, if you have a 360 and Live, you should already have a Windows Live ID, IIRC. Why did you creat another one?

Also, this is Gears 1, correct? MS's Compatibility page says it works fine with 64-bit Vista:

I don't even see the point of ms achievements. First I thought you could turn them into MS points but that I was wrong. They're basically useless to me.

They are just a modern day 'three initials and high score' system. Like playing an old arcade game to get your name on the high score list. Nothing more, nothing less.

I didn't see a way to do that, which is something I mentioned in the 1st post... maybe there is, but it wasn't obvious to me.

The game works with Vista 64-bit, but the game in combination with the LIVE 2.0 patch doesn't.

AGAIN, TO EVERYONE IN THIS THREAD WHO SAYS THIS PROBLEM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ACHIEVEMENTS, IT'S THE LIVE 2.0 PATCH THAT'S BREAKING THE GAME.

Sorry charlie - you're the one who's doing it wrong by trying to play a 360 game on PC years after its release....lol...

You're the one who's doing it wrong by playing the version with no extra content, inferior graphics, and without the option to use keyboard and mouse.

Were it not for this error, the PC version is superior in every conceivable way. Unless you're such a 360 fanboy that you can't see straight, of course.

The PC version of Pac-Man is far superior to the stand-up arcade version, but you don't see my ass playing it.
