Actually, I did like the first two KH games. But it's not a console seller for me. For example, I'd choose Star Ocean 4 over Kingdom Hearts 3 if I could only have one. Then again, if FF13 no longer stays exclusive, I'd imagine Square-Enix would stop providing Sony exclusives for any of its big games. So I'd imagine there's a good chance that KH3 will also eventually get ported to the 360. As an RPG fan, Square-Enix's loyalty to Sony was pretty much the last hurdle to getting 360, because I don't like to spend money on two systems. Actually, I'll be picking up quite a few games. Note that I never owned an Xbox either. So there are a lot of games I haven't play yet. But the thing is I don't play shooting games, first or third person, which automatically cut out some of the most popular games ever released on Xbox(and the reason why I never bothered with the system til now).
FWIW, I don't think SO4 is exclusive to 360 (well...you know, really exclusive). Although maybe I misunderstood your point. I'm not even sure KH3 will be out anytime soon for this to really matter. The way I figure it, FF13 would probably be out at the earliest by the end of the year (in Japan), although it might be more likely for it to be released in 2009. I figure FF vs 13 will take another year, maybe more. So around 2010-2011, the KH team might be able to start development on KH3...and that's assuming that's what the team wants to do. The KH team will probably be too busy to work on KH3. Of course, I guess that doesn't mean KH3 won't happen (some other team can do it). But in that case, I wouldn't be surprised if it just came out on the Wii...although I'd much prefer it on the PS3/360. edit: This kind of brings up the point that we may not get many FF games from SE this generation.
I don't either. I was just using the game to say that KH franchise is not a must-have for me. Although I believe that as of right now, SO4 is only announced for the 360. Seems kind of odd unless Microsoft paid them a lot of money, considering the target audience of the game. Wow, I knew it was going to take a while, but you're right. This could take a LONG while. By that time I can probably buy a PS4 and use backward compatibility to play KH3 if I really wanted it.
Guessing that money was a factor (and maybe development issues), and it was definitely a great move by MS. I don't think most of the 360 JRPGs will sell much better than say Losy Odyssey in the West (or even reach that mark), and while that game sold OK, it wasn't particularly great. I thought perhaps that SE was thinking it could help revive the 360 in Japan, but if they're not even releasing FFXIII there, then I guess that shows you what they think about the 360 in Japan. Of course, with the FF13 news, I guess sales expectations in the West could be much different now. So yeah. MS probably spent $15M on getting these games, and Sony spent $15M on Lair. But only if you get the 800GB PS4 since the 400GB PS4 only plays PS1 and PS2 games. BTW, do you get the Asian versions of games? If so, has Square-Enix ever not released a FF game in that region? I only ask because in one of the QA sessions, they acted like they hadn't decided on releasing an Asian version of FF13. Seemed kind of strange to me, but as I showed in the other thread, I don't really know much about that region. edit: I need to pick a format and stick with it. I called the game both FFXIII and FF13 in the same post.
Bad language (so NSFW?), but pretty funny: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/k-uTnqYHZ-I&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/k-uTnqYHZ-I&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I have Chrono Trigger, FF IV, VI, VII soundtracks on my ipod but does anyone have any reason to believe that XIII will be any different than the lame uber-Japanese stylehairfacenoises that have cursed the series since it got old enough to be made 3d? VIII was subpar, IX was enjoyable. X on was utter excrement. I understand that the Japanese actually make the game but most series lose it well before the tenth part. Maybe they were lucky to make it that far. I could care less about this series or RPGs in general since platforms got all graphic-centric. They seem to have forgotten how to tell a good story cross-culturally. If I want a good RPG, I just DL a good emulator and play some old 16 bit Earthbound or something. I don't want a seizure, some spiky hair and faggy sighs.
Well, FF13 is different at least in some regards. For example, this is the main character it seems: I know it has been kind of hard to tell in recent games, but this is a woman and not a guy that looks like a girl. Now for FF vs 13...
I saw in the trailer something like castles in the sky.. hmmm <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WalK0ZHc0Jg&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WalK0ZHc0Jg&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
China is kind of a messed up region. Due to rampant piracy(and perhaps other factors), gamemakers don't even bother translating most games into Chinese. I think some of the really popular non-RPGs get like Gran Turismo get translated. But otherwise, nothing. So we have three kinds of games here: fan-translated Chinese versions available via the web, pirated Japanese originals, and pirated English originals. Everyone automatically mod their system immediately, because no one actually plays authentic games. And yes, unfortunately, so do I now. I never even thought about downloading ISOs or buying cheap pirated games while living in the US. Now I have a whole stack of them. The reason is because if I want the real copy, it would have to be sent from Hong Kong(which is very pricey with shipping cost accounted for). AND there's no chance to buy used ones because... there aren't any. OTOH, Japanese games seem to be helping me in learning Japanese right now. I just began to play FFXII Zodiac version, and it's kind of neat using it to increase my Japanese vocabulary.
a lot of people in china can't afford the original copies. would you pay $350-400+ for a legit copy when you can buy a boot leg copy for $5-10?
Some people should never have children. I still don't get how people could not like FFX. What's not to like? It's only behind stuff like Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, and FF7 to me. Great game. I hated 8, was bored by 9, and didn't like the combat system in 12. 10 though? 10 was great. NEVER underestimate their desire to make the most effeminate male characters ever. It had been getting quite a bit worse for awhile, and they crossed the line with FF12.
Really? Who in FF12 are you talking about? Vaan? He looked just like Tidus to me. I thought they hit their peak (or low) with Kuja from FF9. Also Zidane.
Spoiler Not entirely new. Story-wise, FF12's "main character" is the princess. That's what I hated about the game -- to spend 100 hours on it only to realize at the end that you've been playing the support cast.
Hmm...I knew piracy was bad in China, but I was kind of hoping it wasn't quite that bad. Thanks for the info. If it helps, I think that guy is joking around. But only because it seems like he was quoting something I read at NeoGAF...meaning that there is someone out there that probably thinks that way. Yeah, I agree with this. IIRC, I don't even think they explicitly say Kuja was a guy initially. I remember thinking he was a woman for a pretty long time, although maybe I'm remembering wrong. True. Although that didn't bother me too much...kind of reminded me of FF6 in a way, although not exactly the same.
I'm only 6 hours into the game (stopped playing it), and I already assumed that was the case. Not really a shocker.
Actually, in the major cities its becoming less true. Most young adults can earn about 3K yuan a month, but the overall cost of living is much lower over there and it's not that hard these days for some one in China to have atleast a couple of hunderd yuan gaming budget per month ($60-$100). It's rather a choice of with a little bit of greed (getting 100 games instead of 1). However I do agree with other posters that 1) It's really hard to find non-pirated version of the games. 2) People (parents/friends) will actually get on your case for wasting money on non-pirated games to the point that you would actually feel guilty about buying something not pirated. 3) Because of lack of enforcements and ease of use, there is too much temptation to pirate. I would liken the situation to post Kazaa music world on college campus in the U.S. but before the law suits crack down. Think of your self with your college budget with the same desire for music, this is in essence what's going in China but in a grander style to all intellectual property. I'm not saying it's right, but it's totally understandable.
I'm assuming you're saying talking about yuans rather than dollars. Otherwise those are some expensive games. I strongly disagree with this, based on socializing with these young adults you're talking about. In fact, most of the employees in my company makes about around that figure. However, cost of living is very high relative to this amount. I'd overall, each person can save about 500 to 1000 yuan a month, and that's with very little spending, and without having to take care of a family. In fact, salaries for most workers even in cities can barely support a family without spending much on luxury items. It's why PC games are much more popular in China, since PC is also useful for other things. Think about this, how many people here would spend a month's salary for a game console? Much less one where games cost about half a week's worth of salary. If you take out pirating, game consoles would likely disappear in most of China.
