Because the Ball Boys don't have 6"5+ defenders with their arms all over the Ball Boy's face. Also, Yao is stationary during practice versus during the game.

Also, his shooting percentage looks high in practice, but in game, you have defenders pushing on you (sometimes 2 defenders on you), with their hands all over your face, with all sorts of contact trying to get you off balance, etc. And of course, in practice, you get to shoot from the same spot, over and over again - which means you establish a rythym for your later shots (watch the 3 point shooting competition in the all star game and you'll notice the 2nd shot, 3rd shot, 4th shot, etc, get more accurate).

Not necessarily. Nowitzki shoots from everywhere, so defenders have to be ready to guard him all the time, just not in the post. (Sorry for using Nowitzki as an example! :( )

60-70% in practice isn't good enough? How about other players? >80% in practice?

    Yao's shot is smooth.

And Novak was clanking a lot of corner 3s until he found his rhythm.

To be honest that wasn't very impressive. Practice and game are totally different things. I 've seen Arena use one hand shooting 3s, He barely missed anything, made 90% of them. As the matter of the fact he beat the other Wizard guard, either Hayes or Stevenson I forgot, who used 2 hands shooting 3s. But Areana's 3P%? worse than Rafer.

That's 73.96% when counting an interrupted ball as a miss.

Yao should try some 3's in the game.

I don't know if Yao can try a few 3s after the PnR with T-Mac. At least that's a choice that will make their PnR harder to defence.

Yao is a 7'6" monster, the farther out you take him the less effective he is and the more of a liability he becomes.

Dominant big men don't shoot threes. I am glad you guys don't coach Yao or he would be playing like Okur. Now I am not against him taking a few quick jumpers from certain spots on the court and mixing it up with his post-up game like Dream used to do, but he's absolutely far more effective within 15 ft of the basket.

IIRC, Arenas was shooting college 3s in that video...

Rafer only missed three (or four?) shots from the mid-range baseline. Must have been an over-sized rim.

Actually, had JVG gotten a Dirk Nowitsky as a rookie, he would have turned Dirk into a low post back to the basket center. Dirk would never have developed into the offensive threat that he is now. You would never have seen the Dirk of today with his variety of moves and shots he has developed. Dirk actually has some pretty slick offensive moves and some good ball handling skills.

Give Don Nelson Credit for being an offensive and creative coach who is willing to work with players and their strengths. Also for giving rookies a chance. Look at what he's done this season with Monta Ellis. Don Nelson had Manute Bol shooting three pointers!!! For crying out loud, Manute Bol should have been the poster child for staying in the paint and just defending the paint and throwing in the occasional putback. But he was actually somewhat of an offensive three point threat too.

Sometimes, I wish that Yao had gotten a different coach who would have let Yao experiment and play with the freedom that he used to have. Remember those slick moves and the no look behind the head passes he had under Rudy T? Where have all those moves gone? Those moves are gone because JVG wants his players to play exactly how he envisions them to play. Everyone fits into a cookie cutter mold. Only problem with that is that people don't fit into a cookie cutter mold. Sure their will have a certain amount of success but at the expense of superior play from your players.

I still wonder how Novak, V-Span, Lucas and Wells would have played had they been given the freedom of playing to their strengths. Even our current players you have to wonder. What if our offense was more fluid and allowed for Rafer, Head, and Howard to create and finish rather than just being spot up shooters?

What we have in Houston is a recreation of the John Starks/Patrick Ewing New York Knicks. Pat Riley in Miami, plays his role players significant minutes. He gave Kapono a shot and Kapono is really slow. Only D Wade plays more than 40 minutes. How much different is Kapono than Steve Novak??? It's no wonder Les Alexander has remained noncomittal about JVG. JVG will be back if he wins the championship. Anything less and I think that there will be a change.

I think shoots from steve Novak are more impressive.

I wonder if he can get a chance to play in this series.
