Ron maybe slower than Jordan but he'll make it hard on him. Or worst break his ribcage.

That's why Maxwell was good against him cause he was quick athletic player.

Maybe in the late 90s when Jordan relied on more of a post up game could Ron have a chance.

This Yahoo columnist/blogger seems to have the canonical stories on Oakley, "The All-Prison League Team," including the disagreement with Barkley:

In the NBA or in lockdown, people don’t get any harder than Charles Oakley. Ask Tyrone Hill, Charles Barkley, or Jeff McInnis. When Oak was with the Raptors, they had a preseason exhibition game against Hill’s Sixers. Before the game even tipped, Oakley found Hill and slapped him in the mouth, they started scuffling, and they were both ejected. Before a regular season game, Hill was leaving the floor after a shootaround, and Oak started tossing basketballs at him, one of them hitting Hill in the face. “Every time we play each other Oakley says something about Hill,” Philadelphia’s Eric Snow said. “He’ll say ‘Where’s Hill at?”‘ Why was he looking for Tyrone Hill? Apparently, Hill owed $54,000 to Oakley from a dice game. Hill didn’t pay quickly enough. “Everything in life is double. If he didn’t pay me $108,000, he didn’t pay me.” Hill later reportedly did pay all $108,000, probably a wise move.

Not even Charles Barkley was too bad for Oak to mess with. According to Peter Vescey of the New York Post, Oak slapped Barkley at a union meeting during the lockout and told him, “Every time I see you, I’m going to slap you.” In a later game, Oakley threw Barkey to the floor just three minutes into the first quarter, and Charles got up swinging. After the game, Clyde Drexler, a teammate of Barkley’s at the time, called Oakley a dirty player. Told of Drexler’s comment, Oak said, “He can blow me.”

Jeff McInnis was another to earn the wrath of Charles Oakley, apparently over a woman. Supposedly, McInnis was after a girl that Oakley was dating in Charlotte. Oak called her one night, and McInnis was there. I don’t imagine that was a pleasant moment for Jeff McInnis. Oak went looking for him that night, but didn’t find him. So the next time Oak’s team, the Raptors at the time, played McInnis’s Clippers, Oak found McInnis sitting on the bench and clocked him in the head. After the incident, Oak blamed Clippers’ coach Alvin Gentry for telling the league about it, and reportedly went after Coach Gentry.

Apparently Maxwell's habit of swinging dumbbells in fistfights during practice was a lifelong love, not a Rockets-only affliction.

This led me to a contemporary ESPN account. When Maxwell fights, even innocent bystanders get injured:

SEATTLE -- Gary Payton and Vernon Maxwell have made up after a locker-room brawl that left two of their Seattle SuperSonics teammates hurt....

The scrap happened Sunday, after a practice session in which Payton and Maxwell exchanged barbs. It escalated into a fight, which Grant and Chuck Person helped to end by pulling their teammates away from each other...

However, Grant sat out Monday night's game with a bruised shoulder and Person, who was already on the injured list, aggravated his surgically repaired left knee. The struggling Sonics fell to the Spurs 90-82, their fourth straight home loss.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Tuesday that the scene became so intense in the locker room after Sunday's practice that Payton picked up a chair and Maxwell went to find a free weight, presumably to use as a weapon. Both men had to be restrained again and were escorted from the locker room separately.

The Seattle Times reported Tuesday that Grant's shoulder injury was due to a weight that was thrown in the altercation. Grant did not comment on his injury, except to say, "I was a victim of circumstance."

But Maxwell told ESPN's David Aldridge on Tuesday there was no fight. "We had words," Maxwell said. "That's all that happened. That was basically it. It got a little heated, like we were going to fight, but it never did happen."

The Sonics fined Payton and Maxwell an undisclosed amount for the incident, a source told ESPN on Tuesday. Neither player will be suspended and no further disciplinary action was planned, the source said...

Question: what poundage of freeweight does one pick up to use in a free-for-all brawl? What weight is ideal for throwing? As it was apparently Maxwell's weapon of choice (I swear I remember Maxwell being accused of swinging one at least one other time while with the Rockets, in addition to the time he connected with Herrera's melon, requring 30 stitches.)

I always wondered about the safety rules posted at my local gym:

1. Always use a spotter.
2. Work out at your own risk.
3. Time limit for cardio machines is 30 minutes during peak hours.
4. Vernon Maxwell restricted to Smith machine / Nautilus equipment.

The single greatest line about being the girlfriend, child, or teammate of Vernon Maxwell, in any of his many incarnations (or for that matter, Ron Artest--check out Sam Smith's story in the earlier link about bouncing the ball just over his teammates' heads), has to be Horace Grant's above: "I was a victim of circumstance."

Random thoughts:

Vernon Maxwell would have beaten Gary Payton to a pulp.
I kinda doubt Charles Barkley had any fear of Charles Oakley.
Prime Jordan would have scored at will against Artest. I am shocked that anyone over the age of 25 would argue against that.

yeah, resign this guy, he's got fire. he wants to win, he's got that competitive spirit. pay the guy, you aren't gonna find someone his caliber anywhere else.
