I'm sure the police would love to be able to encourage people to help others in that situation, but you know they can't say that.
Champions is starting to get really bad. We saw a spike when the 504 folks came but the crime has risen pretty high due to the economy. I'm surprise though that no one attacked those girls. Some kids kinda did the samething to this older guy on the bus on the Northside and half of the best ended up beating the crap out of those kids. It was pretty bad. One of the was hospitalized. I bet they thought pretty hard about it.
That's the dilemma. As a bystander, it's not safe to get involved. Anyone can watch and be appalled that the passengers did nothing, but the safe thing to do as an individual is to let the authorities handle it.
What would seem foolish is to completely ignore what is around you because you want to seem all high and mighty and above everyone. You are seriously telling me if you had a choice on the subway you would choose to sit in the middle of 3 thuggish looking guys over say a old couple? The same concept/logic applies. It's just being aware of your surroundings and facts. It has nothing to do with racism. Unfortunately it's just a fact in our society that certain people are more likely to commit certain types of crimes and its best you be aware of it to protect yourself. Now if you want to act all high and mighty and politically correct by all means go ahead. It's exactly the problem we have with TSA. A 90 year old woman or a 5 year old little kid is not going to go blow up a plane. I think our society has become too obsessed with being politically correct and ignoring what is logical.
Let's help him a bit "Of course people stereotype and it's good not be blind to certain things. For example if I WERE HIRING SOME EMPLOYEES and THERE WERE 3 black girls and 3 white girls and I had my choice. You bet I am choosing to HIRE THE WHITE GIRLS since there is a lot smaller chance I am going to run into trouble. I bet 99.9% of people would do the same. Now is that profiling being racist?" I wonder if he thinks that is racist? Somehow. . . I doubt it. Rocket River . . .you are what we think you are. . .
Absolutely incorrect. If I'm hiring someone I get to check their background, interview them, etc. I agree about not judging a book by its cover, but if a bookcover is all you have to go on... Of course, if I'm getting on a bus, I'll take the well dressed blacks over teenage whites, as well.
That is pathetic that you have to edit my post and hide the original meaning. Your modified version of my post presents a entirely different situation/scenario. In the scenario I described you know absolutely NOTHING about the subjects. Profiling and being aware of those around you is important to protect your self. In your scenario I would be interviewing these individuals and attempting to learn about who they are. Through the interview process you learn about the person and hopefully you can determine their personality, their work ethics and if they will fit in with the team. It has nothing to do with the color of their skin. I am in a position to hire people and I have hired people from all walks of life. I think it is purely pathetic on your attempt to smear me as a racist.
I ride the 137 Northshore Bus with some degree of regularity because I don't own a car. The over/under on the number of white people on that bus besides me if the bus is full is somewhere between 0-3. The ONLY time in more than 100 trips I have ever had any trouble was when a really drunk white guy thought that my shirt looked "fruity" and wanted to start a fight with me. I usually try to sit near a friendly looking person around my age of any color, but if seats are at a premium I will sit near anyone. Maybe the data is skewed because I am large and male, but people who think merely being around blacks and Hispanics is putting your life and limb at risk are probably victims of their own fear more than anything.

I'm surprised no one called the cops sooner. To be honest, I don't think I would have called the cops either. I wonder why that is.
