It's probably a good thing this kid is home schooled. He'd get annihilated at a normal school.

This kid is so annoying, I bet even his mom picks on him.

but i think he is like this because he is home schooled.

part of going to school is socializing and learning people skills.

I just watched another couple interviews about him and each one was painful in its own way (there is a good Jimmy Kimmel interview with him). Apparently this kid is a math whiz, first degree black belt, a musical genius who composes his own conciertos, and he studies Latin. He says he actually doesn't even really like spelling bees. Unfortunately, he will also never see a real life breast until he is well over 30-years old.

this is a few years old right? because i think i recall the original thread going down this same route and then it devolved into someone claiming the kid had some sort of disability and then everyone debated that and a few people retracted....?

or am i thinking of some other video...?

You can learn to be social in other places than school. Some kids are more outgoing naturally and can thrive in a public system. On the other hand, it can be a dangerous place to a fragile personality. It doesn't "toughen" a lot of kids up, it just makes their life that much worse.

The whole "they'll be social r****ds dur dur dur" is a misconception that defensive parents throw out against the homeschooled bunch because they can't think of a better reason.

Many parents who chose to homeschool are well more aware of their child's needs to begin with, as evident by committing to teach them in the first place.

Ok, I'm a wuss and I can't stand watching awkward videos like that.

Could someone do me a favor and give a quick recap?

I recommend watching it. It's hard to capture the awkwardness in words. I don't think it will make you uncomfortable. Just a spelling bee nerd acting weird in an interview.

As good at spelling as this kid is, he's even more incredible at math.

Here's a previous thread from about 2 years ago on this same video :

My comments back then (the links don't seem to work now) :

    -----------------------------------------------

This kid is incredible. His math skills are equally impressive. I was looking around the WWW for worldwide math competitions a couple of months ago (human calculator type competitions) when I came across his name - he competes and does well against the elite math students from 10-12th grades in the US (in the US Math Olympiad). This is while he's still in 8th grade.

    Here are the results :

Here is an example of the US Math Olympiad questions :

There is some internet speculation that he may have some form of Asperger's Syndrome, but nothing has ever been confirmed that he has any time of disorder.

i felt bad for the kid, the parents are to blame. it was nice of the anchor to keep her cool...I wish they would have just called it off, it would have been better for everyone.

    It's possible.

But I think we've also all gone to school w/ kids who were incredibly shy and/or socially awkward as hell despite growing up in the normal school system. This level of awkwardness is on another level. I have a hard time believing home schooling, while a factor, is solely responsible for it.

Why? Would you rather them go to a public school like Columbine? lol. Give me a break, the crap that goes on in public schools is far worse than this kid. He also is obviously "exceptional". Having known and worked with a few home-schooled people, they were really no different than anybody else I've worked with or known.

C'mon now, I knew kids that were worst and they were going to public schools. He did come off as a douche but other than that, I think you have to factor in that he's a kid talking on national TV with a reporter. Not all kids would be that comfortable.
