I'm glad I've managed to hold out, but I think I'll wait until another gen or 2 of the new video iPod before I get one.

rag on the iPod all you want (i have) but in the end, it's still the best mp3 player on the market, even before the massive hype.

What's so hard about using iTunes? I used it when I had my ipod mini without complications.

Ipod is a very good mp3 player but for the price, you can buy a handheld media center. The ipod doesnt let you customize your music they way you want. It also doesnt allow you to create or delete folders. You have to put everything in a preset location.

Itunes isnt so so bad. What was bad is that I was given the Ipod as a gift with preloaded music... I installed Itunes on my laptop and the next thing I know, all the music was gone. Point is, the program is not every intuitive at all. For a 200+ dollar product, I'd expect a user friendly program with customizable features.

Sorry that I made this into a hate ipod/love ipod thread =/ I just want people to know the drawbacks to having an ipod before they buy one... my gf didnt and I ended up selling the present she gave me :p

You have to have itunes to put music on the ipod. There is an install cd that comes with a new ipod and the cd puts itunes on your computer. Without Itunes, you can't update the ipod. As far as the mp3's that are on your computer, you should be able to drag all of them into itunes and import them. And if you make Itunes your primary music player(no reason not to) all new downloaded songs/cd's are automatically itunes files. In fact, when you install the ipod/itunes software to your computer it may automatically set itunes as the default media player(but i'm not positive about that, so if it doesn't just set it as such yourself).

Ok thanks for the info. But what if the songs you already had on your computer were not bought through itunes (i.e. were illegally downloaded previously through kazaa or limewire)?

Basically, what I'm asking is if every mp3 needs to be a purhcase made through itunes. I like ripping cds I own from time to time, and so I'm wondering if I can move some of the tracks I like to the ipod without worrying about them getting deleted or something.

My friend replaced his Mini and bought a Nano a couple weeks ago but is gonna go ahead and sell it on Ebay and buy a new iPod - it will be worth it. He was mad. I was angrier. I bought a brand new 60GB iPod Photo last Monday, 10/3 to replace my U2 iPod.. It pisses me off that the crapheads at the Apple Store let me buy their most expensive product and said nothing to me about the product coming to replace it in just over a weeks time. I was FURIOUS at first because I thought the free return policy ended yesterday (Wednesday) when I saw the news. FORTUNATELY, 10 days will be today (Thursday), so I should be able to return my Photo no questions asked. I don't have the receipt, but it's gotta be in their system, right, RIGHT!? I'll be ecstatic if I can get the new 60; I'll assault one of the employees at Apple Store if not.

iTunes is easy as s*** to use. iPod video? Yes. If you're going to be getting an iPod (for the first time or replacing an older one), then it's a cool, great feature.

So true. The iPod really is the best iPod out there. I don't wanna go into all the details - I'm not just buying into all the hype, I know my stuff. It's just better. iTunes really is simple to use. You just have to mess with it for a while, and you can figure out a lot of stuff that isn't readily apparent at first.

Paragraph 1: Incorrect. You can totally customize it. You can add folders to the library and put whatever song into each. Then, you can update only certain folders. That's through iTunes. Then, on the actual physical location of the songs on your computer, they can be wherever, of course, and I have my music set into different folders throughout my desktop.

Paragraph 2: Man, that really sucks because that could have so easily been prevented. ----- All you do when you hook up an iPod to a different library is set the sync to MANUAL instead of AUTO when it first prompts you. It will ask you to replace, and you simply say no. Then, you simply keep it manual thereafter; it isn't tedious at all if you know what you're doing. iTunes is about as user friendly as it gets. It just takes a little bit of effort to understand it. Every drawback iTunes+iPod has, you can get around them; trust me on that.

It's quite a bit thinner. And I quote Apple, "At under half an inch thin, the new 30GB iPod takes up about 45 percent less room than the original iPod. Even the new 60GB model is 10 percent thinner than the fourth-generation 20GB iPod."

First, you can download iTunes for FREE from Apple.com or use the install CD as previously stated. And DEFINITELLLLLLY NOTTTTT on your main question. You can absolutely load any song to the iPod no matter how illegal; I have a *cough* friend *cough* who's uploaded several thousand illegally downloaded songs to his iPod. You don't have to worry about deletion, nothing like that will happen.

In conclusion, I have no affiliation with Apple, but iPods really are the best MP3 players and they just got a lot better.

Heck no(and it does not differentiate between itunes mp3's and other mp3's). Let me explain. For example, if I were to buy a new cd, and put it in the proper drive on my computer, it would ask me what program do I want to use with it, and I would select import songs to itunes. Then you'll hit the import button to download the songs to your itunes music library(you should see a page with all the tracks listed for your cd). Then you click update the ipod and it will say updating/do not disconnect, songs 1-12 that you just imported. As far as your mp3's already on your computer, you just make itunes the primary media player, and instead of seeing the WMA icon above the track in say your my music folder, you will see the itunes symbol. Then just plug in the ipod as instructed and it automatically updates all new stuff added.

Also, if you download new mp3's and have itunes set as the primary music player the next time you connect your ipod to your computer it will automatically update your music with the new mp3's.

Now, I will say this about itunes cd prices. They are typically like 8.99 to get all the songs immediately downloaded to itunes(like cell phone ringtones) which is a lot cheaper than store bought new cd's. However, purchased music while included in your main music library, also shows up as a separate playlist of it's own.

$299? For something that has a 2.5 inch screen and plays video and mp3s.

Might I suggest a PSP with a 4.5 inch widescreen? A device can play games, mp3s, movies, and homebrew software?

Granted, I'm still trying unsuccessfully to get the new Commodore 64 emulator to work on it. :p

The videos you download with iTunes for an iPod will have write protection on them, and until someone comes up with a hack for it I doubt it will work on anything but an iPod. If you don't like an iPod, don't rag on them. I am a "gaget guru" and "coolness" is a factor when I buy my gagets and always has been. iPods are sleeker, and have a much better design then any other player out there just like Mac computers do... this just happens to be an Apple product that is affordable compared to a $3,000 Powermac or Powerbook.

One HUGE selling point for the Ipod is also the THOUSANDS of accessories made just for it, with Griffin's iTrip and AirClick being my favorites and probably the most popular... no other media player on the market has 1/4th of the accessories that the iPod does, especially ones that are designed specifically for it. I've had a PSP with a 1GB memory stick and it was "too big" to be a good MP3 and mobile media player for me, plus there is just something about a 26 year old walking around with a PSP all day, people probably think you play magic the gathering and live in your mom's garage.

Also... YOU DO NO HAVE TO USE ITUNES WITH YOUR IPOD, THERE ARE MANY FREE IPOD FILE TRANFER PROGRAMS... GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND!
