because it's a dinner/theater concept, that's the whole point of the Alamo Drafthouse experience... Popcorn and movies have been in the American movie going experience/tradition since the silent days of movie watching... Texting inside a dark movie theater breaks the concept of enjoying a movie going experience... People can't turn off cell phones for at least 2 hrs of their daily lives??

    Studio Movie Grille is better.
The waiters are really quiet. I try to be the same while ordering. They bring you the food very quickly. Same with the receipt. It's a good experience.

It's actually better than going to the theaters in the city (AMC Dunvale). Kids and other annoying people are much louder.

I was, not too long ago, turned away at a 5:30 showing for ToyStory3 there because policy was no kids under 6 (I had a 4 year old with me that was pretty excited about seeing a movie) after 5pm or something to that effect. It is pretty cool they stick to their principles, but I have to tell ya, that didnt sit too well with me at the time, and it still irks me a bit. certain movies/ratings? sure, I get it. but a 5:30 showing of ToyStory3?

I know, not so cool toystory, bro, but ... maybe I'm saying I think it's good they tossed her if she was blatantly disregarding them, and good that they stick to their principles, but that also maybe they come across as a bit uptight or misguided, by my experience. A bit.

i want to agree with you, because I love me some CityCentre...and we do frequent SMG quite a bit, because it's so convenient. we were just there to see Hangover 2...but we've had too many bad experiences there...and the menu is much bigger and better (as is the beer selection) at Alamo.

but...i do love me some CityCentre.

That disgruntled customer sounded an awful lot like Sarah Silverman.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was a viral campaign. Actually, I'm pretty sure that's what it is considering they slapped their logo on it. But I would think Silverman is a little more well-spoken than that ... unless she's just really good at making herself sound illiterate.

I've been to Alamo in West Houston once and enjoyed it. Also been to Star Cinema Grill in Clear Lake, and while it's not as nice inside, it was still a good experience. If you plan on spending $7 on popcorn and drinks, you might as well spend a couple more bucks and get a meal out of it. I'm cheap though, and usually prefer the $2.25 matinee at the old theater where I live.

Rarely go to movies at night because of idiots kids like this but when I do its alway to a Studio Grill up here. Never been to Alamo but I've always assumed it's the same concept for the most part.

That entitled little b****'s parents really should have instilled in her some idea that she is, in fact, not the magical special jewel goddess at the center of the entire universe.

We've become too coddling, too afraid of discipline, too stuck up our own asses - and now we're faced with a generation of squealing, greedy, and self-absorbed little tyrants - kids who, in their 20's, are still stuck at a 12-year old's level of development in terms of awareness of the needs and desires of others.

If you had to do something during the time fram of the movie, why not just pick a different time to watch the movie?

Silverman is indeed capable of such a incoherent, profanity laced rant:

    Yep, sounds fake to me.

Movie Tavern is a great place to watch a movie. Food is decent and no more expensive than your average Chili's-type place. Lots of beers to choose from. The waiters are very non-intrusive. They wear all black and tip-toe around to check on you only if you have your menu standing up, otherwise they leave you alone.

I wish they were as strict about cellphones as this place though. I wish every theater was.

So then leave the theater, and check the time.

it's less restaurant and more movie theater and the experience has a nice flow to it.

each row is elevated above a walkway for the waiters to go in front of you without bothering. you fill out a menu card when you want an item and put it up in front of you. you can get all your food and drinks ordered before the movie starts.

then the waiters (silently) bring items and take away items as the night goes on and check to see if you ordered anything more.

i guess the only obtrusive part would be paying the bill, which they do near the end of the movie. you have to think about tip and everything else and it takes you out of the moment

it's always fun getting pitchers and burgers, etc...

I remember my first experience was for the old Spike and Mike cartoon Fest when they showcased the very first Southpark Christmas video before it was a series...

i also remember seeing "W" there and someone got kicked out for their unnecessary reactions during the movie. people started a political argument and someone got the boot!

they have perfected the art of the brew n view cinema imo

That's a joke. The food is much worse for starters and they don't do all of the special events that Alamo does. have you ever gone to one of Alamo's "feasts"? They are awesome. Then there's the rolling road show, all their theme nights, getting to go see shows like Lost for free, etc. Not to mention the pre-movie entertainment Alamo puts on.

All of those other places that ripped off the Alamo drafthouse have taken the general concept, but not the cool factor of Alamo. The ones in Houston are great, but pale in comparison to the original one in Austin.

Sadly, I no longer live in a place that has an Alamo drafthouse.

I'm not a big fan of the Alamo in Katy. I like the concept of the meal-n-movie, but I guess I prefer stadium-style seating to the old-school theater setup required by the meal-serving process. I'm not sure what I expected, but the theater setup itself reminded me of the dollar theaters that typically inhabit older run-down cinemas. The quality and upkeep is obviously a lot better, but the screening setup itself seemed outdated.
