Well, the games I play the most are Prince of Persia and God of War - so, I'll let the videogame handle that for me. Though it'd be wicked awesome to pull off those moves and kill a bunch of people all the time.... The only game that would possibly count for this poll would be Mario Kart. I like both the video game and real life.
Because you're acting as if it's strictly one or the other when it's not. If I had to choose between exclusively playing real basketball or playing a videogame simulation of basketball for the rest of my life, there's no question I'd pick the real thing. But you're missing the point that there are so many things you can (pretend) to do in a videogame that you simply can't even begin to do in real life. There are extreme examples like Grand Theft Auto or Halo, but even something "real" like a basketball game offers you the chance to do things that aren't possible otherwise. I mean, you tell me what park I can go to actually orchestrate the rise of the Minnesota Timberwolves from laughing stock to NBA champion and I'll be there ASAP. See my point? It's not a replacement for things you actually do in life, but a taste of things that you can't.
Well I can certainly dodge oncoming traffic then jump across a river full of hazards in real life but why would I do that...
Really... Can't you tell me how to get to this go kart track? Looks awesome. Hopefully it's inside the Beltway. Spoiler
To get there, you have to go up your ass and around the corner. Stop just before your tonsils, should you still have them. It's on the right.
So so misguided. I was just being a smartass in return to your smartass remark. Maybe I should go back and put smileys on it for you.
That's a very interesting point and I was thinking about it in terms of no consequence. Playing a boxing or martial arts video game you can get the rush of knocking somebody out without the sweat, toil and pain that comes with actually getting into a ring and trying to knock someone out. Call me a masochist but I think the sweat, toil and pain is part of the experience of doing martial arts is all of that other stuff. I've played Streetfighter and I would never take that over an actual match. Of course I can't yet breathe Yoga Fire.
You and moestavern bring up a good point that it is about doing stuff, like being a GM, that you can't do in real life. I guess for me I've never really gotten that much into that level of roleplaying, outside the bedroom of course.
Well, I for one, growing up on Street Fighter II, have never pictured myself as the character and knocking the opponent out. It was about being skilled in the game and defeating your competition (or AI). I would like to think most gamers do not associate the games they play with any real life counterparts. Only those with a mental illness would get confused between a game world and the real world. Actually the only one instance where gaming vs real life might be applicable is between LARPing and RPing online.
C'mon Reality Bites...oh wait... I can see how the lines get blurred if you play a lot...Everything is better up close and personal, IMHO...Games are an outlet, but real life has so much more to offer...
i was about to post a smartass response about prefering to do anything in real life rather then virtually doing anything.....then i realized how much time i spend reading this bbs and realized i'm no better then the rest of you
You could also ask, why would you watch NBA basketball when you could go outside and play the game yourself? I think the answers are similar to why you would play the video game over playing a pick up game. You get to see something done that you yourself couldn't do in reality. You also get to see something that you're emotionally invested in (you're a fan of a player/team), except w/ a video game you have control. One added bonus of playing NBA2k8 is that YOU can make the team perform the way you think it should. I'm guessing some people would hit the reset button if Yao gets a career ending injury. And you might make Tmac drive a hell of a lot more to the rack. And certain posters here would still have guys like Vspan on their team
