They didn't strip out the software that emulated the EE (well...actually, I guess they did technically, or could have anyway, but it didn't matter). The problem was with the Graphics Synthesizer (the PS2's GPU; the EE was the CPU). That chip couldn't be easily "emulated" via software. They could emulate the EE and, together with actual GS hardware, they could emulate PS2 games. But no hardware GS, no PS2 emulation. Well...no good PS2 emulation anyway. The reason for no PS2 BC is 100% technical (at least with the assumption that you couldn't include the GS in PS3s). edit: To further clarify, the PS2's GPU was pretty exotic. It is definitely far behind the PS3's GPU, but it did have some odd design choices, which includes some benchmarks that actually allow it to outdo the PS3's GPU IIRC. This is partly why it is so hard to emulate it.
My bad. I totally got that wrong then. One of Sony's greatest failings this cycle is their inability to communicate their changes and policies. They were so full of hubris for so long and just blew off questions as to their motives (BC, network outages, removal of linux, etc.). I read game articles pretty regularly and if I got it wrong, I can't be the only one.
Yeah, that whole ordeal was a big mess. In their defense, it is really complicated to explain, not to mention possibly harmful to the PS3's image ("Hey guys...sorry, the PS3 isn't powerful enough to run PS2 games without some help.") Definitely should have been handled better. I'm pretty sure an engineer would just laugh at the idea of this (i.e., it isn't as easy as it sounds), but I wish they could have had the PS2 chip (EE+GS) handle some kind of job for the PS3, if/when it wasn't being used for emulation (this is how the PS2 was able to do BC...the PS1 chip is included, and handles...something...I forget what...sound or IO or something). Then again, game journalism is so bad, even if they tried to communicate it decently, journalists would have butchered it somehow. They've been butchering the PS2's hardware (well...hardware in general actually) for as long as I can remember. Making the same mistakes over and over. And yeah, people get this wrong quite often (due to all of the above). I'm sure I would have gotten it wrong too, although I like to follow this stuff pretty closely. edit: Yeah, it was I/O: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R3000

Damn it, I wasn't watching the Ubisoft conference, and apparently they showed Watch Dogs, a "next-gen" game. Sounds like it was awesome. I'll post a video if I can find one. edit: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/n3F3KW-2ABc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> edit2: Bleh, no gameplay in that one. edit3: Try this one: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/FcMRkyoHKeA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Quadruple post, sorry. But wow. Yeah, definitely check out the Watch Dogs gameplay demo video I posted. Along with looking pretty, the concept actual sounds pretty cool. Can't wait to see more of it. Sony conference starts soon I think. edit: Ubisoft is listing the game as 360/PS3/PC...but I don't know.
Sony's conference seemed more focused on games, but also more focused on bad demos (Wonderbook seems like interesting idea, but horrible demo...way too long, plus the problems). Some of the game demos went on too long (I know, I saw show more games, but sometimes shorter demos can work well). No real surprises. Apparently nothing to the streaming rumors (or if they're accurate, nothing revealed at E3), although guess it is good to have PS+. Lot of games I like, which is nice though. I have kind of avoided AC3, but their demo looked pretty crazy (though not sure how much of it was scripted). Edit: I need to quit watching the big 3 conferences, and just watch some of the publisher conferences. Those seem more more entertaining, and usually some good surprises.
knowing ubisoft, that game will most likely to get a sequel if anybody remember the first assassin's creed games, it was and innovative game but to repetitive. since they said it's next gen and microsoft and sony did not announce new hardware, this game might be on the wii u or release later in the next 2 years or so
They need to have a VERY solid launch lineup. Smash Bros and Zelda would sell the system by themselves.
Nintendo doesn't do good launch line-ups. I learned my lesson from buying both a Wii and 3DS at launch- I will NEVER buy another Nintendo system at launch again. Unless the Wii U has a very very impressive launch line-up, the chances i buy one are very very slim. Bought a 3DS because they said half of the games they announced would be out by June. June came and the only game out was a remake (Ocarina of Time, good remake and I played a lot of it, but still). The only launch games worth a crap were Street Fighter and Pilotwings, and even Pilotwings felt rushed and like it could have had a lot more content. Their systems generally take almost a year to take off. The Wii didn't even have online for a long time and didn't really take off (for me at least) until about when Brawl came out.
Beyond, Last of Us, and Watch Dogs all have potential to enter my best of all time list. They all 3 look amazing. Was expecting it from Last of Us, and anything Quantic Dream makes im on bored with, but Watch Dogs came from nowhere and blew me away. love surprises like that at e3. Next year is going to be awesome for gaming.
Star Wars 1313 looks amazing. <div style="background-color:#000000;width:520px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:moses:video:gametrailers.com:731126" width="512" height="288" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed><p style="text-align:left;background-color:#FFFFFF;padding:4px;margin-top:4px;margin-bottom:0px;font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;font-size:12px;">Get More: <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com">GameTrailers.com</a>, <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-2012-star-wars/731126">Star Wars 1313 - E3 2012: All Access Debut Interview (Stream) HD</a>, <a href="http://pc.gametrailers.com/">PC Games</a>, <a href="http://ps3.gametrailers.com/">PlayStation 3</a>, <a href="http://xbox360.gametrailers.com/">Xbox 360</a></p></div></div>
Don't think it is Wii U (or not specifically Wii U). They named other games for the Wii U, but didn't list it here. Could be aimed at PS4/X720, but since they weren't officially revealed yet, Ubisoft just said "next-gen." Then again I'm confused by the platforms in general. Like I said, I believe they were promoting it as a next-gen game. But they then list it as PS3/360/PC (no Wii U, although if it's PS3/360, don't see why Wii U wouldn't work). PC I can very easily understand (in fact, it was demoed on PC), but I still find it somewhat hard to believe that it could work on PS3/360. Guess we'll see. AC3 does look pretty nice, and I think Watch Dogs is using the same engine (or maybe a next-gen version of it). It probably is 18-24 months away. Or more. Just like Final Fantasy Versus XIII. And The Last Guardian.
Watch Dogs looked cool...but it didn't look anything like a "next gen" title to me. The graphics were good, but they very much looked like a Xbox or PS3 game to me. As for it not being on Wii U...just because they're releasing it for Xbox/PS3 doesn't automatically mean it's going to be on all platforms. Why do you find it hard to believe?
