I grew up playing Mario, today I find myself jumping on turtles and killing them for fun.

It is a voluntary rating, not enforcable....

Show me some hard evidence where these games lead to violence in children under 17.

    Then we'll make it mandatory.

No correlation, either. Real, hard, scientific evidence.

The only thing I've ever seen is that these games actually cause people to become *less* violent, even frustrated teens, because it allows them a safe way to take out aggression without actually hurting anyone.

Otherwise, the onus should be on the parents.

There isnt...its a cop out for parents...they get to blame their children's wrongdoings on video games.

Is there a game producer out there that does not partake in the rating system?

Same way with rap music, movies, etc. It's always somebody else's fault.

If I may add, by this logic, war games already de-sensitize war.

I mean war must be fun right? To have no fear, getting 10 headshots in a row and reaching the end of a mission after racking up 50 kills. I want to join the army when I get older dad!

Ok, ok, so I heard some actual veterans are traumatized for life, even if they shot someone in self defense. The absolute horror of seeing someone a comrade shot down before your very eyes. The never-ending fear of an ambush or stepping on land mines that they can't forget and end up getting nervous breakdowns after returning home.

But that's probably the minority right? I bet most veterans can't wait for redeployment to increase their accuracy rate and try out new weapons.

Some of you are arguing as if this is just a black or white matter. Very difficult to blame a video game for Columbine, etc.

However, one would be very naive to say something like this could not make an impression on a young mind. I am all for parents taking responsibilities for their own kids and not suing video game companies, but that stage was quite disturbing.

Me and my friends were talking about this when MW came out 2 years ago. We were like this is all fun and games but there are people doing this stuff in real life right now and if they get hit there is no do over. I mean, it's fun and games until it's real life.

I read until I got to this post, so I'm late to the party here and perhaps someone else has mentioned this already, BUT: Your logic applies to R rated movies, p*rn, cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, sex, and anything else a parent cold possibly want to shield their child from.

Enforce your rules in your own home, make sure that your child understands your feelings and wishes, and enforce your rules and regulations accordingly.

So don't punish me and every other ADULT who wants to play this game or any other as your rules for your children should not infringe on the rights of others.

I am amazed that you have taken the stance that you have.

It's a good point, but it might be noted that there are laws for (almost) everything on your list. laws. not company policies.
