Great touch showing his charitable work first before the basketball plays. Added some character to the video mix. (If in any way that its out there, and not that the video isnt outstanding already and needs it...Can he or somebody find the 1994 clip John Elway yelling shrieky to the crowd before a playoff game "Let's GET RRREAAAADDY TO MUT-OOOOM-BOOOOOOO!!!" all intense and cheesy ) Easily 2nd place behind the Sex Mutombo line.
I remember reading somewhere that he was thinking about not playing this year. Im glad he stayed he is a better person than he is a player and thats saying a lot because he is a hell of a player. there have been a lot of 40 year old playing this games but I guarantee there are only two or three that still play at that age after getting starter minutes their whole careers.
May be we all should all donate a little something for the great man's charity, a few bucks won't set us back. I love you Deke! Any parent would be proud to have you as a role model for their children.
people forget that deke used to be a pretty good player on the off. side of the ball too.....i am so glad we have him. to me he and zo are the best backup centers in the league by far. its also nice to have so many classy players on this team....they are exactly what professional atheletes should be.
link Grizzlies Release Details On 5TH Annual MLK Jr. Celebration Game and Symposium Last Update: 12/20/2006 12:06:27 AM Posted By: Greg Gaston The Memphis Grizzlies are once again honoring athletes for their contributions to human and civil rights during the fifth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, January 15 during the nationally televised game on TNT vs. the Phoenix Suns at FedExForum. This year’s celebration will be highlighted by the presentation of the second annual National Civil Rights Museum’s Sports Legacy Awards presented by FedEx. The awards pay tribute to athletes who have made significant contributions to civil and human rights and who have laid the foundation for future leaders through their careers in sports in the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Our goal five years ago was to create new opportunities to celebrate the vision of Dr. King and the courageous leaders who advance the causes of civil and human rights,” said Grizzlies President of Business Operations Andy Dolich. “The creation, in 2006, of the Sports Legacy Awards builds on the strong foundation for educational programs between the NBA, the Grizzlies and the NCRM. We are now able to honor those individuals in sports who carry on Dr. King’s legacy.” This year’s recipient of the national award is former NBA great David Robinson, in recognition of his continuing charitable achievements including the construction and operation of The Carver Academy, an independent school for San Antonio students from a culturally diverse community. In addition, Houston Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo is this year’s international award recipient, in honor of his ongoing efforts in improving the health, education and quality of life for people in his homeland of Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The MLK Symposium, presented by the Hyde Family Foundation, will be emceed by ABC’s John Saunders and feature both Robinson and Mutombo, who will share their stories and experiences about their contributions to civil and human rights in the spirit of Dr. King. The free symposium will be held in the Methodist Healthcare Practice Facility at FedExForum from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. While admission is free with the purchase of a Grizzlies game ticket, space is limited. Season ticket holders interested in attending must pre-register by calling 888-HOOP or via email at rsvp@grizzlies.com. All other fans must pick up their pass at the FedExForum box office beginning Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 10 a.m. Following the symposium, the Grizzlies and Suns will tip-off at 6:30 p.m. at FedExForum in a game presented by Lexus and associate sponsor Colegate Palmolive. A special halftime ceremony, presented by AutoZone, will feature a Martin Luther King Jr. video tribute, the FedEx Sports Legacy Awards presentation and a musical performance by R&B and soul legend Patti LaBelle. The celebration officially tips-off on Monday at 12:30 p.m. with the MLK Jr. Day High School Classic presented by Southwest Tennessee Community College, featuring some of the top boys high school basketball teams in the state. In the first game of the afternoon, the Liberty Magnet Crusaders will play the Mitchell Tigers in a rematch of last year’s Class AA State Finals. The second game tips off at 2:30 p.m., and will feature the 2006 AAA State Champion Hamilton Wildcats against the White Station Spartans.
