Your assessment of that scenario is exactly correct. The analogy stands, but apparently you misunderstood it. I'll try to clarify:

Bill <-> Old Guy, Mugger <-> Black Guy

    • Bill was not exercising good judgment and increased his chances of getting robbed, just as Old Guy (IMO) did not exercise good judgment and increased his chances of getting punched by allowing himself to continue in an unnecessary verbal spat.
    • Therefore Bill was partly responsible for his friend's watch getting stolen, just as Old Guy was therefore partly responsible for the fight starting.
    • Nevertheless, Bill did not deserve to be robbed, just as Old Guy did not deserve to get punched.
    • Mugger deserves to be punished, just as Black Guy deserves to be punished.
    • Bill shouldn't be arrested for his poor judgment, just as Old Guy shouldn't be arrested for his poor judgment ... or should he? Personally, I don't think so, and never said he should be arrested in this thread. Unfortunately for him, it appears he might have been charged for disturbing the peace.

You can run through the entire thread if you care. I never argued anything contrary to the above.

He sounds a lot different than the video on the transit bus.. His voice sound like the host of an A.M radio station; kind of like a smokers voice...

So is it confirmed that the guy that attacked him was a convicted murderer? Its hard to know how much of what he said was fact and how much was fantasy.

The video and transcript says it all. Deejay kept coming at him with verbal assaults and Santa was simply responding back and standing his ground. If not pussying out and letting someone else walk over you in public all over and over again repeatedly after you have tried your best to move away and avoid him is a mistake then that's a very rare opinion.

This idea just popped into head. These EBG memes fit perfectly to "Is it wicked not to care?" by Belle & Sebastian.

We are watching two different videos. This is the only reasonable explanation I can come up with, because what you describe is so unbelievably 1-sided that we can not have watched the same thing.

Here is the video I'm referring to (it was also posted in the beginning of this thread):

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lQJFv9SMSMQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lQJFv9SMSMQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

    [0:47]

"You ain't scaring this white boy." ... Good, you got your word in, now just keep walking Santa. DeeJay/Beatlejuice is seated, muttering tough-guy threats (essentially, "leave or I'll kick your ass"), agitated. But let it go, and its over. No need to turn around.

BUT ... he turns around and repeats it: "I'm 67 years old, you ain't scaring me."

Wow ... shock, now Beatlejuice gets up out of his seat.

    [1:05]

Back and forth going on across the bus, both of them are agitated, lobbying threats at one another. Beatlejuice says "I'll put my foot up your ass" as he is sitting back down in his chair.

OK, situation is about the settle down. He is sitting down on one end of the bus, you moved yourself to the other end of the bus. Another opportunity to just let it go. Oh, but what happens? Santa decides to say the following:

"You ain't going to do nothing to me. I'll tear your ass up!"

Well, duh ... I wonder what that's going to achieve? Beatlejuice gets back up and yells: "Say it again! Say it again!" Trying to be a tough guy he walks up to Santa and words are exchanged. A woman says "Leave that man alone." He turns around.

    [1:32]

As Beatlejuice walks back to his seat, we have yet another opportunity for the issue to be dropped. But Mr. Doing Everything a Reasonable Man Could to Diffuse the Situation goes:

"I see tough guys like you and I slap the **** out of them!"

What follows is as predictable as the sun coming up. Beatlejuice turns around, "What?!" In his mind, this is a challenge to his manhood. He can't let it go. And he walks back to Santa and delivers his punch. We know the rest. Beatlejuice gets put down, which he deserved. Kudos to Santa for defending himself. I don't blame him for that.

But, do not tell me that Santa did everything he could to avoid that fight. I know what I watched. I have eyes, I have ears, and I have a brain.

Can't we all just get along?

Arguing about racism in this video is like playing tug of war with pantyhose over your heads...

    Vlaurelio,

You're debating with a wuss. Don't even bother. The young guy laid hands on the old guy and got a Robin Venturaesque beat down.

Sam's cocky like the young guy in the video and would hide behind the law if his law if he got his ass whooped for running his mouth.
