I wouldn't call drafting number two and number three overall losing the lottery, and I question any fan's judgement who does.

This is what happens when u go all out rebuild phase

Losing the lotto would have been giving one pick to OKC and drafting the next year at fifth but they got two and three overall with a punchers chance again at top 1-3 slot which would start year three phase of rebuild

That OKC KD era wasn't deliberately tanking they were just young n not very good until they got their 3 main pieces in consecutive drafts which is what the Rockets are currently trying to mimic pretty much

Everything falls on Stones lap cosigned by his sponsor Tilman, it is what it be

100% agree. Especially considering the last 2 drafts had potential multiple all star caliber players. Green may very well end up being rhe best player in this draft and Smith might very well be the most complimentary player to him. It's way too early to tell.

Add Wemby/Scoot to this core and we are talking about an excellent core that has multiple championship aspirations

It's worth noting that guys who could be franchise guys that can also lead a team to a championship comes around very rare (a few per decade) both via draft, free agency, or trade.

Well, the Rockets are not the only team after Victor, it is a tad self absorbed to think that way.

But in general the 2nd and 3rd pick are top but the players that were taken there are still very much questionable without someone like Wemby.

I think there are deeper issues, I think many players are equally talented or the gap is not that big.

Okay, Green is younger, faster, has more potential than KPJ who has an NBA ready body and who is still a kid at heart.

Unless they figure out how to establish that hierarchy and that pyramid system of blue collars, specialists, bench mob and stars, they will have problems with the identity.

Roster is missing some tough love veteran aka No Bull ish like a Vernon Maxwell, like a Sheed Wallace, Billups, Ron Artest.

Right now Silas has no real clue and is playing most of his favorites.

To me Tari is a starter for example, the starter glue.

Yeah so get the talent then get all of that. We are in talent accumulation mode and it's our last year to do it via the draft.

The cornerstone is not just the player but a core principle of player types to surround your next superstar with.

And that includes a head coach with a mean streak and not a big softie. Someone who benches players when they are out of form instead of just starting them, obviously looking at Bari.

We suck we dont have to tank. Also we've been the worst tema for the last 2 years and still no #1 pick. Tanking guarantees nothing.

This is unnecessary at this point. Find your stars first, then worry about the complementary guys.

This rebuild was never designed to produce a winning team in just a few years; this was a long-term, full-tank rebuild. Anyone expecting a winning record before 2024-2025 at the soonest will be doing a lot of fist shaking and teeth gnashing in the meantime.

This. Funny y'all acting like we are actively tanking when we are quite literally the worst team in the league.

Good luck with that, either you go the Kings or Pacers way and trade for the right player you think fits best or you just wait and wait and wait.

you lose wemby and we're in a "tank for wemby" thread. explain how that is a win? and don't say scoot unless you going to create a wemby or scoot would be great thread.

TLDR version: Sometimes the star(s) don't look like stars under certain coaching and complimentary players.

    ----
As far as identifying those 'stars'; sometimes it's important to view closely the environment they were in. Lot of times the stars aren't as obvious if the environment they were in weren't great.

    I. Could be a star, but maybe didn't appear that way:
Of recent examples, Lauri Markkanen comes to mind. I thought this guy was a dud. But after this season, I think some of that is on Bickerstaff. Recently was reported that Jazz rejected Hawk's offer of John Collins for Lauri. If I was the Cavs, I'd still do the Mitchell trade, but probably could have saved a pick or two. He's flourished under Will Hardy.

II. Star who is good across teams; but still shined more
Tyrese Haliburton. The consensus around the league was that Pacers got a really good deal in getting him. (i and most CFers here; agree). Despite already showing good promise on the Kings, he's passing is being unlocked in Carlisle's system. Dude is leading the NBA in assist (at 14). If he had shown this much under Luke Walton, I'm still not sure if the Kings would have made that trade. The Kings did get better with Mike Brown, but Haliburton wasn't around to enjoy that.

III Star who struggles under different regime
Many guys in this boat, but a recent one is Ben Simmons. In hindsight, I'm kind of impressed with Brett Brown did in Philly. He did what he could to hide Ben's weaknesses and feature his strengths. After Doc got there; it was shown that Ben could not be maximized further.

On the Nets, Simmons just started to get back to where he was. Nets analysts are finding out that Claxton doesn't work well with Ben. Ben is likely to keep his starter job, but he was far from his early days. His career could re-surge, but of it played so far his rise and peak was with Brown; not Doc, Nash, nor Vaughn.

    ---------------------
All this is to say that sometimes a budding star is clear like a Haliburton. Other times not obvious: (and still a maybe).. Lauri. Or a coach already maximized a player: Simmons, but on a different team, could be fool's gold.

From Jabari's rocky start or if Wemby gets here, on paper these guys should be likely stars. But are the Rockets ready to receive them? Is Silas a Luke Walton (bad)? Or is he a Bickerstaff (acceptable), but maybe mis-prioritize on some players. In general. some of the Rockets young guys are improving, but are they improving at the same rate as the young stars in the league. There's a part of me that think if we trade Sengun, he's going to blow up under another coach.

Sengun in his recent interview admits (and credits) his post-moves from his old Turkish coach. I'm sure our Rockets staff is helping him improve; but some of the things that we like about him, was already there before he got here.

Then there's cases like Josh Christopher, where it seems like there's regression. My read is less that Silas love Gary, but more that coaching staff lost trust in JC. Like the summer league selfish thing. Josh is saying he did what coach asked. But beat writer seems to side with Rockets coaching; that it was not the case. Either way, there's seems to be mistrust, and Josh may need to ride the bench some more until he gets back to good graces.

    ---------------------

Maybe some you guys feel that Wemby can be so transcendent, he can raise the floor despite Silas? o_O

Well, some people believe pulling Sengun late in the game (especially a close game) is active tanking. While I don't agree with the benching, I also don't think Silas is actively throwing games.
