Actually, I own Journey's greatest hits CD....but don't let that get out. ------------------ There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
Black Sabbath and Ozzy are listed. Why? Ozzy WAS Black Sabbath. If that is allowed Sammy Hagar should be listed too even though Van Halen is listed. BTW, I love Ozzy. He still rocks at 50!! ------------------ Only in America......do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front. fadeaway -- those are some of my personal favorites. Quiet Riot's "Metal Health" was the first 'metal' album to hit #1 on the Billboard Album Charts. I know it's not really 'metal' (Judas Priest, Maiden, Anthrax), but that's the classification, and it was the first. GnR's "Appetite for Destruction" is I believe the #1 selling hard rock album of all-time. Faith No More is one of the most innovative bands of any genre ever! They should definitely be higher. Go listen to their 'Angel Dust' album and be blown away! I think a lot of you are taking this list too seriously. It was compiled by other artists, and not 'critics', which is probably a good thing. The only complaint I have is that a lot of them aren't really hard rock. My top 5 would probably be: 1) Queen 2) Led Zeppelin 3) Aerosmith 4) AC/DC 5) KISS
My top 5 would have to be: 1) Led Zeppelin 2) Metallica 3) Dream Theater 4) Megadeth 5) GnR ------------------ She hates testicles, thus limiting the men she can admire to Democratic candidates for president. -- John Greenway, "The American Tradition", on feminist Elizabeth Gould Davis
Damn how I love making lists: 1. Sonic Youth 2. Led Zeppelin 3. Jimi Hendrix 4. Pink Floyd 5. Alice in Chains ------------------ "Priorities is our values"-Dubya at campaign stop in San Jose on 11/1/00 visit www.swirve.com
I thought I was the only person who was blown away by that CD. Excellent band that not many people listened to. Kid Rock tries his best to imitate them, but falls far far short. ------------------ In order to be a success in life, you need 2 things: 1. Don't tell everything you know.
No Poison, no Dokken, no Ratt, no Cinderella, no Tesla? Man, where are all the 80's glam-rock bands? Hahahahahahaaaa!!! Whoa, I just noticed that Bon Jovi is on there! He he he he he he!!!!! Anyone remember Triumph? I used to like them. ------------------ There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness." [This message has been edited by HOOP-T (edited November 03, 2000).]
This list is strictly in terms of hard rock historical signifigance: 1.) The Ramones 2.) Black Sabbath 3.) Rolling Stones 4.) Led Zeppelin 5.) Nirvana These are my top five personal favorites: 1.) Black Sabbath 2.) Led Zeppelin 3.) The Cult 4.) Rolling Stones 5.) The Who ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
How do the Ramones get to the top of the list? This is a much better historical ranking: 1) Hendrix 2) Led Zepplin 3) The Who 4) Black Sabbath 5) Kinks ------------------ Test Your NBA Trade Ideas 1. TheFreak, You just gained some credibility points with me. (like you care ) I've never seen anyone give Aerosmith that sort of recognition, though they deserve it. I don't think anyone can top their first 4 or 5 albums. Although nowadays you have to pick and choose the songs on their new stuff, they still have the same percentage of good songs per album as anyone else out there. Then again, I've never seen anyone put Queen that high either. ----------------------- outlaw, You crack me up. ----------------------- If the list were a little more strict or defined as to what "Hard Rock" meant, then GnR, might belong that high. I will argue til the cows come home that there's no single better album out there.... ever. But, one album should not get you that high. ----------------------- ------------------ "I have a DREAM.........his name's Hakeem." DREAMer's Rocket Page
Freak>> Why are some of the bands on the list in bold? ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
Hoop-T: Triumph = that other trio from Canada. I like them as well. Lay It on the Line, etc. Michael Schenker? Boy does that bring back memories. I can see why he's not on the list; he never really caught on though. Certainly not like his big brother. I had several of his albums with autographs. Come to think of it, I also had at least one Metallica album signed (back when Cliff was the bassist). Like to still have that one. Oh yeah, Ministry? I'm taking it that's the post "Halloween" days. But still, I think you ought to at least use real guitars (not guitar samples) to be considered a real rock band. Unless, I'm mistaken or something's changed, Ministry doesn't fit that description. I sure had fun when they came to town in '88 however. Anybody use to frequent Numbers, Power Tools, etc? ------------------ [This message has been edited by TraJ (edited November 04, 2000).]
Allman Brothers not on the list? Lou Reed? Velvet Underground? A very sad list. Mango ------------------ Test Your NBA Trade Ideas 1. Put new topics in the proper forum. How do the Ramones get to the top of the list? The Ramones were a very influential band. They invented punk and paved the way for many of the sub-genres that exist today. This is a risky statement, but I'd say that more bands would cite the Ramones as their greatest influence than they would Hendrix. The Kinks weren't bad, but I don't think they belong on the list. ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
Mango -- those last 3 bands you listed aren't hard rock. Neither are the Kinks. Queen, if I had a gun to my head, I would probably say weren't hard rock. But if you took only their 70's stuff (which is mostly why they're so great, even though they were voted Band of the 80's in Britain somewhere), you could call them a hard rock band. You seem to know a ton about rock music though (almost suredly more than I), and a lot of the bands you've listed I'd like to know more about. I guess I'm a little young to know most of them. Uriah Heep? What are they all about? DREAMer -- Aerosmith probably wouldn't be in my own personal top 5, but I acknowledge their greatness. They are definitely rock gods. TheFreak, All I know is the older stuff. When you and RM95 have those threads going about current bands, I am lost 90% of the time. "Easy Living" is probably the biggest hit for Uriah Heap. I am waiting for Finn* to comment on some of these bands. Then how do you classify my three that you say don't belong? J Geils band should make it as a hard rock band. Talking Heads? George Thorogood? How does Lynyrd Skynyrd make it and the Allman Brothers fail to qualify? I never thought of Yes as hard rockers. Mango ------------------ Test Your NBA Trade Ideas 1. Mango -- If you'll remember I said that one of the few complaints I had was that a lot of the bands listed weren't hard rock. I don't think VH-1 laid out any criteria for the panel, or eliminated any artists who weren't hard rock (obviously). Of course I think Yes, Talking Heads, etc. shouldn't be considered hard rock. Like I said, I don't think it should be taken too seriously. Just thought it was a cool thing to talk about and get others' thoughts on some bands. I do think it's a little peculiar that Black Sabbath ended up #2 and had 3 representatives on the panel.
Uriah Heep and Jeff Beck should be on that list for sure. I just checked Uriah Heep's official web site. They are making a comeback. They are having a concert in England in December. Only problem is it will be unplugged, with strings flutes and backup singers. They will not use a record company to promote this CD and Video (they are taping and recording the show) It will be available only on the internet. http://www.uriah-heep.com/ ------------------ In order to be a success in life, you need 2 things: 1. TheFreak, I know, just having fun ranting like DREAMer does from time to time. BobFinn*, Thanks for the Uriah link and your support on some of my nominations. Does anybody want to tackle placing Lou Reed in a category? I spied Iggy quite high on the list and am trying to figure that out. At least I didn't find Wendy O Williams.
